With the new cosmic entities Synder is giving us(Barbatos, the Titans, Perpetua and the World Forger), I want him to do something meta and make cosmic entities who are meant to represent retconning and the status quo respectively

[up] That's the Forger's whole M.O in Justice League really, he wants to graft a new reality on the prime universe behind the grand council's back and wants Batman to help him...probably because Batman is DC's top selling hero.

God in Heaven, I didn't think anyone would have the balls to remake "A Death in the Family" outright in this day and age.

... assuming, of course, that is in fact what they're doing and not taking the road almost everyone else has done and snipping everything away from that (gloriously awful) story apart from the "Joker kills Jason" part.

[up] Nobody can handle the sheer, megalomaniacal bromance of Joker and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Hence the disbelief anyone could do that story again.

Jamie Chung as Death.

Jamie Chung as Death.

Dammit, why can't they make a live-action Sandman so we can actually get live-action Jamie Chung as Death?

Also, Karl Urban as Sgt Rock is some pretty perfect casting.

We won't know more until 2020, but maybe they want to tackle it a la The Killing Joke minus the part NOBODY liked. You know the one.

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised at the lack of fanfare. I was expecting some people to lose their minds over the fact that they're doing an animated short featuring one of THE best parts about Neil Gaiman's The Sandman saga. And that they're doing something with that series AT ALL after that live-action movie doesn't seem to be going anywhere...

I'm always up for more Sandman content and it's a pretty clever choice for only adapting a little bit of it

@ RedM: Was the US on bad terms with Iran during that comic book or not? If they weren't, I don't see why they'd mock Iran by making them stupid enough to make the Joker an ambassador. At least with Joker Immunity you're only failing to kill him/keep the Joker arrested, you're not giving one of the biggest serial killers on the planet a political position. Actually, there's a thought-in terms of numbers does the Joker have the largest death toll of any Earth-born villain or is that dishonor someone else's?

It was kind of a Lampshade Hanging on the constant retcons. The timeline in DC is stretchier than taffy.

Ra's al-Ghul has probably racked up the biggest body-count based on length of operations alone. Disqualifying him, I'd say Cheshire (she of Qurac-nuking fame) has the top spot.

As to your other question - "A Death in the Family" came out during the Reagan administration, when songs like "Bomb Iran" were all the rage, and Jim Starlin was (whether of his own accord or by editorial edict) trying to write as much like Frank Miller as possible. In my more generous moments, I sometimes wonder whether it's a miracle the story didn't turn out worse than it did.

Then I remember the "illegal operation" moment and I go, Yeah, no, we're already at the bottom of the barrel.

May 11th 2019 at 11:24:38 AM

Putting the awkward political issues aside I donít even think death in the family is that good a story. Its strung together by a ridiculous number of coincidences (so Jasonís mom just happened to once work with the joker and he just happens to seek her out as Jason was seeking her out) and the only real interesting thing about it is Jasonís death.

Miller would write Joker contaminating Iran's water supply with Joker Venom and have it treated as a good thing. tongue

[up][up][up] Vandal Savage might beat him with that, given he's about 70 times older than Ra's. For starters, if he really was Genghis Khan that means he's responsible for 20 million deaths

I find it interesting that Savage has three Magnificent Bastard incarnations, yet his main counterpart has always been treated as too repulsively evil to ever count. Then again, they already had a MB immortal in Ra's

The current one by DeConnick is great so far — and you don't really need to know anything to read it.

Peter David had a great run in the '90s. That's the one where Aquaman gets a hook hand. I believe there are several volumes of his run out now.

Kurt Busiek had an interesting run called Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis, but it wasn't about the regular Aquaman, but a different one.

Sorry for the double post, but damn does this make me hyped for Event Leviathan, a new Bendis-mystery mini-series. A group of detectives, not led by Batman, but by Lois Lane? That includes the Question and Manhunter? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP.

[up][up]I actually have a friend who tried out the Peter David one. Said it was completely disrespectful to the character by turning him into a bearded barbarian antihero and that everyone should just read the 'SAT' comics from the 60's. Never bothered to tell me what 'SAT' meant. Then again, he has something of a disgust for most comics past the early 80's. So he's not exactly the best person to turn to for that sort of thing.

[up]He's in his 30's. Basically he has a very... specific idea of how comics should be. Organic storytelling, bright and hopeful, paragons of virtue. There are exceptions of course, but that's how he generally prefers them. He did enjoy the Nu 52 Aquaman, but that's because he's his favorite character.

I gave De Connick five issues, and honestly felt bored by the whole thing. The art was good, the story was dull as it could be. I have dropped the book for now. We'll see what the next writer does with the character.
