Well, I consider that good news, since I don't have any Wal-Mart near me. In fact, making them Wal-Mart exclusives was kind of stupid — it meant that people who go to their local comic shops couldn't find them, while only people who go to Wal-Mart could. And most of those people aren't exactly comic book fans.
The fact that the only books that was cut was the "New Age of Heroes" line, I think, is good. The line was...not good. The only books I had any interest in were The Terrifics and The Unexpected and while both were good, I have a feeling that they were also not selling that well. The rest were...well, Marvel rip-offs, to put in bluntly. (So was the Terrifics, but that was a deliberate homage.)
(Although, Green Arrow was also cancelled, so I wonder if that was another book that was cut in order to reduce the lineup.)
As for the reduction in collected editions...damn. I mean, I'm already sad that I won't see some comics collected (I really, really want to read Nick Spencer's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, but the first trade is out of print and there was never a second trade), but this just means more single issues won't be collected, which sucks.

I wonder if the 48 or so pages of new material means some of the cancelled books will be integrated into the giants?
Well, it would make sense if there was existing material...
Yuri fanfiction writer! http://www.fanfiction.net/~shanejayellDan Didio clarifies future of Wal-Mart titles:
Hmm. Well, that's good if they are successful, but I'm glad that they are expanding them to the Direct Market, because, again, no Wal-Mart near me. And it looks like they are also increasing the size of the book, perhaps to make it more magazine-like? It would be interesting if Marvel and DC started publishing magazines again, like they used to do in the '70s.
One key moment from DC Rebirth will be revisited in Heroes in Crisis...
(It's Barry and Wally's bro hug.)
Any Captain Atom fans that could give some recommendations of stories about him to read?
I have heard the 80s run by Greg Weisman is pretty good and set the stage for the modern characterization of the Captain. Then there's his crossover with the Wildstorm universe which iirc is just him kicking everyone else's ashes. Don't know what his situation has been in New 52/Rebirth though.
Not really. And I don't say that because I haven't read anything with the character. I actually read nearly all of his main series from the 80's and 90's.
It wasn't very good.
To be clear, it's not terrible. And the first year is actually pretty decent. But after that it doesn't know what to do with itself and slowly slides into mediocrity. By the end it's a total mess.
And there was that one story arc with Ken Penders. The less said about that one the better.

Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundSo I'm a fan of the versions of Artemis Crock and Jade Nguyen that are used in the Young Justice animated series. And I'd like to see the comics adapt those versions and their dynamic. Anyone got any ideas for how that could work?
At the moment, they couldn't, because Artemis is dead. (She died during the stupid "The Culling" crossover.) If they do bring her back, they could definitely make her Cheshire's sister.
I also hope they bring back Sportsmaster like they have him in the show, because that would be awesome.
According to wikipedia, she was revived.
Huh. Nice. Unfortunately, they haven't used her for anything after that (even for Bendis's Young Justice).
The very same annual that spelled out Harvest's motive - turns out, he was actually trying to get the most metahumans killed possible. Because he was a guy from the same future as Bar Torr, whose son was killed by metahuman militants. So he wanted to isolate "the best" and then senselessly wage war using them so as to terminate them before they could hurt anyone.
When that didn't work, he made a facility that seemed to be working to help meta-humans but turned out to be aiming to destroy them all. The Titans beat him up, and he dies, deciding to stay behind in his exploding fortress basically because he got proven wrong or something.

You're going to pay a price for every bloody thing you do and everything you don't do. You don't get to choose to not pay a price.
The big news on the cutbacks is that the Wal-Mart exclusive line is being cancelled, instead the 100 page giants will soon be available everywhere and will have 45 pages worth of new material added to them.
