DC Comics General

A general discussion thread for all things DC Comics. Topics may be split off into their own threads if necessary. That said, since there's already a thread for the D Cn U (aka Nu52), this one would probably stick to pre-Nu52 comics to avoid redundancy.

I've always wondered if there's a justification for Wonder Woman's outfit being designed after a modern-day one-piece swimsuit/leotard instead of something that would fit her Greco-Roman mythological background (e.g. Amazons were more often than not depicted as wearing trousersnote ). A few attempted redesigns had her adopt Lady Legionnaire Wear for a skirt, but they never stuck. And then of course, there's her pants-wearing design during J. Michael Straczynski's run (courtesy of artist Jim Lee).

[up] I was hoping an Absolute Hawkman would either have a really simple backstory, or die every issue so we could see every incarnation across time/space.

So he's a hawk who is Sam the Eagle.

Granted, I haven't kept up with everything, so maybe I missed something, but considering how the last major arc of The Flash (Jeremy Adams) ended, has Wally ever gotten around to telling Donna and Garth, "Oh, hey, Robbie and Cerdian are still alive"? You'd think, given Roy's grief over losing Lian and his own issues before he finally reunited with Irey and Jai, that letting two of his friends know their kids aren't dead would be a top propriety for him.

[up] That was explained by those kids being from alternate universes, so after the arc ended they went back to their own universes.

[up][up]When was that explained? Because the DC Wikia still treats them as the actual versions, and Mister Terrific's son is still around and treated like his real son.

[up] Twitter I believe. Because Adams had to rush his book to an early ending to make way for the Si Spurrier relaunch, what happened to those kids had to be offscreened away.

Donna and Garth's kids never HAD a personality cause They died soo young

[up][up] Still not out yet. Its a one-shot set to release on October 1st.

Its a book going to focus on the evil big bads of the Ultimate Universe, providing a better look at Absolute Joker, and will be introducing Absolute Green Arrow along with apparently the Absolute JSA.

The solicit for the special.

IT'S THE ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE ABSOLUTE UNIVERSE — AND ITS VILLAINS STAND UNITED!

Without heroes...without protection...without restraint... there is only ABSOLUTE EVIL.

The emergence of superheroes has caught the attention of the world... and it’s certainly caught the attention of the people who run it. Ra’s al Ghul, Veronica Cale, Elenore Thawne, Hector Hammond, and the mysterious Joker have worked at cross-purposes until now, but this growing threat requires new ways of thinking... and new partnerships. An insidious betrayal from within their ranks is imminent, and if they don’t take action, they’ll lose control of a planet that was built to be their playground!

Superstars Al Ewing and Giuseppe Camuncoli join forces to kickstart the next era of Absolute Universe stories... with several shocking new character reveals, and one big unmissable twist!

The last page of Aquaman (2025) issue 9 has Mera, baby Andy, Garth, and Jackson seemingly alive and well but Arthur seems unable to hear/see them.

I blame the new power-up. :P And man I hope it isn't a fake-out since the next issue's solicit has pirate ghosts and the current issue has adult Andy running around. I also feel bad that Arthur never once mentioned Garth and Jackson's deaths when commiserating.

either that, a heroic Black lantern or the origin of one a new level of light with one the cooler colors (Blue being my guess. Primary color theming and traditional association in GL lore helps.)

In a recent interview with Word Balloon, Greg Rucka discussed his experiences with DC back when Dan Di Dio and Geoff Johns were in charge:

"It was toxic when I was there and remained toxic until Dan Di Dio left. It was an abusive, manipulative environment. Geoff Johns was an incredibly manipulative person to me – used me, lied to me, played me off against people. Di Dio did the same thing. I was made promises repeatedly, and they were always broken. When I left in 2009, I was mentally ill. I was severely depressed, suicidal. I nearly took my life. And that's all the direct result of the way I was treated from 2006 through 2009, it was done with malice. The people I'm speaking about are bad actors. I'm not in a place where I will ever defend them again. They did what they did with malice of forethought."
Damn. He also talks about how he was brought back to DC for the chance to help right the ship with Wonder Woman and how he made sure to put a list of demands in writing.

The new Red Hood comic was just cancelled after one issue with orders for issues 2 and 3 cancelled and refunded. This is apparently due to views stated by writer Gretchen Felker-Martin, and due to ROCEJ and other things that's all I'm saying about it.

@ Martin's firing: My opinion is that even if her comments were termination-worthy in a vacuum, the bigger issue is the huge Double Standard here. DC looked the other way on Berganza and Lobdell's sex crimes for ages, only firing them due to outside pressure, while Martin does something much less bad once and she's out. And they salted the Earth of the entire book, too. Im pretty confident this was indeed an agenda-based firing.

@ Johns: Ugggghhhhhh, first Ellis, then Gaiman, now him. I'm quite relieved I finally read his Green Lantern all the way through recently, because when someone is implicated in something this bad, that's it for me. Their work is permanently tainted. I don't believe in separating art from artist; IMO, enjoying art made by a bad person is morally wrong and we should stop making excuses for it, at least while they're still alive and can make money off it. I'll never read JSA or Stargirl now, but that's comparatively unimportant.

To be fair Martin was fired due to outside pressure to. She ALSO was very controversial (I’m not talking politically- she said some comments about incest I think? And also about how 9/11 was justified). It’s not surprising DC wouldn’t want the controversy
