My mind somehow wandered back to MS Saga while lawnmowing today. Specifically, what I would change if I had 100% free hand at designing a sequel or reboot. Do note that I have next to no experience with JRPGs outside this game, so I don't know which of these is in breach of genre conventions.

My thoughts:

  • Make arm parts interchangeable between left and right. There's nothing more annoying than having ranged-only arms being available only for right and disabling melee.
  • Do not restrict melee capability to right arm only. If the right arm cannot melee but the left can, use the left arm instead of just standing there stupidly.
  • More melee attack types for melee weapons (ex. slash vs. stab vs. overhead strike) with differing damage, armor penetration, accuracy bonus/penalty, attack speed and possibly status effects.
  • Melee attacks for stuff other than arms and hand-carried weapons. For example, if neither arm can melee, the suit can still kick or shoulder-charge (if not counterattacking) with damage depending on the appropriate part (hi, Zaku shoulder spikes!).
  • Ability to parry attacks if equipped with a melee weapon or shield and take no damage, rather than just take reduced damage unless the attack is armor-piercing. Success and reduction are both percentage-based and apply only while using Defend.
  • Distinguish between one-handed and two-handed weapons and allow dual wielding as a normal attack if the suit has two one-handed weapons (currently requires a boost to attack with multiple weapons), but potentially restrict non-hand-carried weapons to having a high enough melee/ranged skill unless the party member is a not!Newtype or the suit has an OP part equipped that reduces the skill requirement for dual wielding.
  • Expand the Standard Status Effects into Subsystem Damage with more reasonable countermeasures. For example, camera-sniping disables ranged attacks and debuffs melee accuracy but if the suit being attacked has a backup camera (either innately like the GM series or as an OP part), the status effect goes away after one turn and the suit has to be camera-sniped again for it to stick. Extremely high-rolling critical hits would result in stuff like the suit losing an arm or cooking off with an AOE blast that hurts its allies and/or its killer if it was a melee kill (or even hurts only the enemy lineup if the kill was from a melee counterattack!).
  • More party member stats.
    • Separate proficiency stats for each weapon type plus one-handed/two-handed. Basically, diversify them more than just varying their melee and ranged stats. Passively increases both with use and with level-up, but only to a certain extent for the former. That is, having Aeon grind mooks with a beam saber increases her skill with one-handed swords despite being a sniper, but she'll never actually catch up to the melee specialists because they'll always grow in the relevant skill faster than she does.
    • Passive skills.
      • Only partially being affected by being camera-sniped due to Newtype haxmagic.
      • Removed penalties for certain dual-wielding combinations.
      • Allow dual-wielding two-handed ranged weapons (at the cost of significant reduction in mobility, of course).
      • Boost to the repair skills of everyone in the party (by way of giving technical instructions over radio).
      • Semi-accurate guess about the capabilities and remaining health of opponents (similar to the existing Analyze skill, but passive and not 100% accurate). Two versions: one is based on Awesomeness by Analysis, another is Newtype haxmagic.
      • Increasingly accurate forecast of what the enemy is going to do this turn. Four levels: 1. can tell if being targeted, 2. can tell who in the party is the target, 3. can tell which enemy is targeting who, 4. can tell which enemy is going to use what attack against who.
  • Remove the front row / back row mechanic. The full party is brought to bear during combat (and enemy pod sizes increase accordingly), but how many party members get hit with any particular AOE attack depends on the attack, who is it centered upon and how the targeted party member is positioned.
    • Additionally, spending at least two consecutive turns in Defend or otherwise not fighting grants that combatant minor HP regen until reengaging.
  • More optional content because by God is the game short on it! A dozen Brutal Bonus Bosses on the world map plus a Tournament Arc that kills you if you lose are not enough. We need sidequests. 99% of the game isn't voiced anyway, so it's not as if it would require extra lines to be recorded.
    • Also, preferably no sidequests with static rewards. By that I mean that the rewards should be varied a little: multiple-choice rewards, optionally take only part of the immediate reward and get a long-term benefit instead, etc.
  • Boss fights need a MAJOR overhaul. I don't know about you, but one-sided Rocket-Tag Gameplay where bosses can two-shot anyone without an immunity are not my idea of fun. Nor it is that you can anticlimactically kill the final boss inside 2-3 minutes with proper minmaxing.
    • Scale boss level to party level to prevent cheesing the fight by overleveling. This was seriously a problem with the Zock and the Zamel because if you actually want the equipment the area's weapon shop offers before fighting the boss, you will be seriously overleveled by the time you grind out enough cash to buy it.
    • Bosses in general should have less attack strength, but considerably more health. Don't sweat the player with "oh crap, will this next boost attack TPK or not?", sweat them with "running seriously low on healing here, I don't know if we can keep this up".
    • For bosses that aren't mobile armors, health increase is not as radical but instead they have very high evasion to start with, additional extra evasion against attacks that go after them in the turn order and complete immunity to AOE attacks (which includes several high-end boosts and all bit attacks). They're basically evasion tanks.
    • No fixed boss pattern. I know this is a tradition and meant to make the fight easier once the player figures it out, but boss fights generally don't go on long enough for this anyway (and even when it does, the instant you know the pattern, you can cheese the boss). Instead, the boss still has a fixed pool of actions to pick from but the order of actually using them is no longer scripted. The available actions change as the fight goes on, but more than once and some randomization is involved to keep the player on their ties.
      • For example. In the Zock boss fight, it would start with a claw slash for melee. First change, the boss may or may not get a crash-tackle move that stuns; whether it does or not is a random chance. Second change, if the boss didn't get the crash-tackle last time, it does now, in addition to a spinning backhand attack that smacks multiple targets without a counterattack. Third change, the boss has a random chance of losing the crash-tackle but getting a significantly more powerful dropkick-stomp instead. I feel this would make for a considerably more exciting boss fight than using a pre-scripted pattern at the beginning and switching to endlessly regaining full EN and spamming the same three OneHitKill and AOE boosts once hurt down to 20% until killed.

Lots of info for Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. 2. Apparently the game will have "Exceptional Graphics" and will be a 2v2 arcade action game. Elements from the previous Extreme Vs., such as the Extreme Gundam Type Leos and Sthesias, will return for this game. New Mobile Suits include the Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex, the Try Burning Gundam, and the Gundam Maxter. Japan will be getting a location test for the game in May.

Also, New Gundam Breaker will be having a Customized Build Contest, as presented by Santa Claus and a fish! The winner will get to appear on Gundam Build Divers.

I mostly became tired of how many different versions of Extreme VS they released seemingly every few months. We got a break with Gundam Versus, but it came back a little to fast, in my opinion.

[up] I see what you mean, though I think Extreme Vs. 2 will be a full-fledged sequel rather than another Updated Re-release. It even has a "2" in the title rather than a subtitle.

On that note, I'm thinking of making a separate WMG page for Extreme Vs. 2 since I think the developers will be focusing on that in lieu of Versus 2017. I remember reading somewhere that they intended Versus 2017 to be a game for eSports, but since there hasn't been any updates for it in a while, I figured that they abandoned it.

We have new information for Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. 2!

I wanna start of this quick recap of what the article shares by showing this beautiful artwork for the game. I'm thinking that it might be the boxart for the console version for the game, or at least some promo art for the arcade version.

There is a “Plus Coin Mode” which is meant for beginners, where they can put in two credits in advance to play a minimum of three games.

The medals you get during gameplay can be exchanged for scratch tickets used to unlock Extra Mobile Suits.

The EX Bursts/Awakenings in this game are as follows:

  • M-Burst: Enhances Mobile Suit performance and mobility.
  • L-Burst: Refills ammo and boost recovery effects on your ally when activated, also fills up EX Gauge.
  • F-Burst: Enhances close-ranged attacks and makes it possible to break enemy guard.
  • E-Burst: Avoids critical situations, available with half your EX Gauge.
  • S-Burst: Makes it possible to cancel shooting attacks, decreases reload time, and fills up its meter at a faster rate.

And finally, the AGE-1G Gundam AGE-1 Glansa and the MSAM-YM03 Montero have both been confirmed to be playable units.

I hope this means more time for developers to polish the port for PC, and not because the publisher wants to add in some form of MTX or loot box system or some other gameplay-affecting monetization mechanic at the last minute.

Perhaps it's because of watching too much Jimquisition or similar YouTube channels, but I can't help but have suspicions whenever a "triple-A" publisher delays releasing a video game that has potential to include shady practices that Jim and a few other critics are constantly railing against. I want to check back to this post and see whether those suspicions are jossed or confirmed.

Hey guys, I have a bit of a pickle. On the Gundam Vs Series' WMG subpage, I want to give my section on "Potential Gundam Versus (2017) Roster Suggestions" it's own separate page, as well as make a new one for the upcoming "Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. 2". The idea is that I would copy-and-paste all of the entries in "Versus 2017's" page on "Extreme Vs. 2's" page, while removing the ones that are already in 2 and adding a bunch more entries on the page (Since I'm certain that "Versus 2017" has ended it's run, so adding more entries to that page would be moot). The problem is, I don't know what the full roster for "Extreme Vs. 2" is at the moment, and Gundam Wikia hasn't made a page on the game yet. Off the top of my head, I know that ASW-G-08 Barbatos Lupus Rex piloted by Mikazuki Augus, BG-011B Build Burning Gundam piloted by Sekai Kamiki, and GF13-006NA Gundam Maxter piloted by Chibodee Crocket are in the game, along with the RX-78-2 Gundam (Which I assume is piloted by Amuro Ray) and Sthesia Awar piloting an Extreme Gundam (I don't know which one, though). So what I wanted to ask you guys is if you could A) Give me a full list of all the mechs and pilots that have been announced for "Extreme Vs. 2's" character roster, and B) Ask Gundam Wikia if they could make a page for "Extreme Vs. 2"? I'd really appreciate it.
