So out of being a little OCD i edited someone else's comment here and posted an edit reason immediately afterwards.

then i go back to the page only to find out that the guy got renamed to me for some reason.

there's also the occasional "<ip address> unknown troper" stuff (i have a post that turned to that, but can't remember where). what gives?

It is generally improper to edit other people's entries, unless they are screwing up the formatting (for example, if they have images posted).

The reason why they are editable is primarily because there are no un-awkward ways to copypaste examples from the comments into the draft otherwise.

[up]Well, other than viewing the source of those comments. (The same way as to how Wikipedia allows one to view the source code of locked pages.)note

I have left commets like "Edited this comment for [reason]. [troper], edit it to get your name back on it," in the comments I edited.

That seem to work.

@Septimus — I see. I'll keep that in mind next time.

[up] that's neat, why didn't think of that?

anyway, how about the <ip address> unknown troper issue?

Done, the copying problem has a topic in the tech noticeboards so closing here.
