I have read the manga adaptation, which I am told sticks pretty closely to the light novel. So some thoughts...
There's nothing in the manga story that requires the protagonist to be Japanese, no special Japanese culture or history tie-ins. He's only Japanese for the convenience of the intended audience, and a raw recruit from any other country would work just as well.
But since Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise, the original character arc of "naive, idealistic kid becomes hardened warrior and loses his innocence" doesn't work as well. Given that, the character arc they give Cruise's character works very well for his age group and acting abilities.
And thus Rita has to be older too, so the romance angle doesn't feel too creepy. This actually works better, I think, as manga-Rita's backstory is highly improbable, and having her be Emily Blunt's age works a lot better.
I understand the movie has changed the ending in an important way, and I have not seen the movie yet, so cannot speak to that.

Ok I'm not gonna lie, "Cancer Movie" sound like the next shitty Seltzer And Friedberg "parody movie" that blows ass.
Back on topic I'm probably gonna see this soon cause everybody says its gud.
Likewise. I'd never heard of the source material before I heard of this movie, but now that I've gone to see it and enjoyed it, I'm interested in seeking out the original material and reading it as well.
Also, as food for thought: Edge Of Tomorrow is basically 'First Person Shooter: the movie". Which I mean in the best possible way, since really, what Tom Cruise's character goes through is pretty much the same thing that every major playable video game protagonist ever goes through.

I'm probably the only person in my circle of friends who would rather see this than Fault In Our Stars.
Looking for some stories?@Stinger: Well, the source material(aka the All You Need Is Kill) was inspired by video games
Incidentally there is one scene where Cage is firing his guns that is shot in first person.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."To be fair, they changed an important plot mechanic from the novels. But the ending didn't sit right to me; It was...Well, it was too Hollywood. It made the scale of the story too large, and it kind of lost the thread in the explosions and noise.
I'm probably annoyed because I'm familiar with the novel, however. I'd have enjoyed it more if I wasn't aware of the source material. But boy, did the ending absolutely lose me.

I think the ending fulfilled its purpose, but I think it clashed with the overall bleak and pessimistic tone the rest of the movie has. I feel it'd have ended better with Everyone dead and the omega destroyed, but the war won.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Watched it last night. Very much agree with ![]()

Also, that General... Really unprofessional/vindictive. Like, seriously, what the hell? Cage should have been court-martialed for that shit (and court-martialed hard), but seriously busting him down to Private and pushing him into the frontlines could (and should have) turned out so much worse.
And whoever pointed out how similar the Mimics are to the Ceph, thank you! It's been bugging me for hours about how familiar they are...
Overall, good movie! I'm a little surprised at how... light... the some of the Jackets are loaded. Most of them should really have been carrying more ammo and gear, given how modern-day exoskeleton projects are aimed at exactly that (and logistics-simplifying lifting stuff).
It looked to me like there were different variants of jacket for different people, though yeah, they do seem a bit lightly armed considering how much the Mimics seem to be able to take.
Also yeah, Brigham can go die in a hole.
Twenty Minutes with Jerks was actually really effective here, I actually took pleasure in J Squad being brutally murdered in the beginning and Cage telling Rita not to shoot Brigham "again". I probably would have abused the loop potential so hard to go into the office and then repeatedly beat the shit out of him XD

I don't know, I feel on the fence about Brigham. He is doing his damnest to stop the Mimics from winning, seems genuinely concerned for humanity and doesn't show any cowardice or corruption. He just happens to be extremely vindicative and impatient with people who oppose him.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I feel as if something was missing from Brigham's characterisation- like there was some Character Development that could explain his attitude towards Cage that was left out for some reason. Either that, or Cage's status as a propaganda mouthpiece.

I meant more corruption in the sense of "neglecting your job due profits". Demoting Cage and sending him to the frontlines was a dickish move, but it was just him being vindicative. He didn't do it out of monetary gain or self-interet, he did it because he thought Cage was standing in his way.
So I retain my assetment. He's an overall good leader with a darker side.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."

I haven't read it, though I was interested in doing so.
