See, and I figured it made sense they were under constant pressure, what with Holt being openly gay and with the 99 consistently showing up other cops for being bad/corrupt. The real NYPD has massive, massive problems. A precinct like the 99 would get screwed.

So I started watching this series, and it's my new favourite thing. Currently, I'm also watching Superstore. Both have absolutely hilarious and mostly nice characters, which I enjoy.

My favourites are Holt, Rosa, Amy, Terry; Perralta is also amusing, though he can be annoying; Boyle is hilarious with his food obsession.

Last episode I saw was "The Party". Holt and his husband are the sweetest thing ever. I absolutely loved their argument in the bedrooom and the trio of Terry, Amy and Jake overhearing them in the bathroom.

I love how Holt is genuinely the funny one. He has a very deadpan sense of humor, but it is definitely there. It's just his subordinates usually don't notice.

The Party is one of my favourite episode, because it is a classic case of wrong assumptions leading to miscommunication. Once you get where the husband is coming from, it is actually quite sweet that he is so protective of Holt.

I liked what they were trying to do in The Therapist by challenging Jake's perception of therapy but I think having Jake's initial assumption be right puts the lesson slightly off-kilter.

Otherwise this was a pretty decent episode and hoping Jocelyn makes more appearances.

So I sort of binge-watched the whole thing. And boy, was it hilarious and amazing and touching and all kinds of awesome!

  • Jake really grew on me. He went from slightly annoying but amusing to amusingly annoying or annoyingly amusing to really charming. I love, love his enthusiasm, and his many issues are interesting.
  • Jake and Amy's relationship is everything — so sweet and fun and healthy; it's a will-they-won't-they trope done just about right. I was worried there might be a break-up because of how quickly they got together, or even worse the dreaded on-again-off-again thing, but nope — they're great for each other and still going strong. Favourite moments:
    • Jake's wanting something 'romantic styles'
    • Amy craving Captain's approval ("he totally approves of us"; agreed, Ames, he totally does)
    • their budding relationship, realistic issues, their first I-love-you's
    • the proposal (heart melt number one)
    • Jake's being uncertain about Amy truly wanting to marry him and thinking he's not as smart as she is while she assures him that he is just as smart
    • the wedding (heart melt number two, especially Jake's "you're my dream girl")
    • my top moment of them is Jake's "full bullpen": Amy's good-luck kiss, her securing his helmet and the proud look in her eyes as he slides on his socks through the office— can they be any cuter?
  • Btw, best use of Office Sports I've ever seen on TV or anywhere, really. Amazingly funny.
  • Cold opens are a-MA-zing (the full bullpen, the office bowling with added alliterative appeal, guys in line-up singing a song by Backstreet boys etc.)
  • Consistently funny as hell
  • Amazing characters (as ensemble and virtually all pairings)
  • Very special episodes — done surprisingly well.
  • Finally a show I not only want to watch, I want to trope the hell out of it;

Sorry for the Wall of Text and double post, but I just love it so much. I want to get this off my chest as well.

  • Latvia: Acceptable Targets much? Never been there myself, but it's in EU and it can't be this bad. Rule of Funny, I know, I know, I'm not too fond of it. In the new tens, children in post-soviet countries don't call authority figures "comrade". There's no way four-year-old Nik-Nik would be calling Charles that. The orphanage kept cancelling Christmas due to a blizzard, a fire, and a famine? Ech. Crime and children smuggling rings exist, but Nikolaj's backstory is so over-the-top and honestly, not that funny (at least to me, I know that humour is subjective).

  • I appreciated the honest story-line about adoption — first, I'm happy that Charles and Genevieve chose is over obsessing over sperm donors, fertility treatments etc. But it's true that even happily adopted children want to find and reach to their bio parents and there is no guarantee it will work out, as Charles says. (Related issue: Charles' ex is pure evil. God, the thing with his divorce settlement is awful and the thing with 'sperm hostage situation' was so, so horrible.)

  • Gina: Sorry to say so, I'm glad she's gone. True Creator's Pet... She was fun in the first series when she wasn't concerned at all what others think of her without always being the solution to whatever crisis there is. I especially disliked her awful treatment of Amy. And I was unable to finish the good-bye episode — so much Character Shilling that I couldn't take it anymore. But I do think it would be fine to see her once or twice a season. Her actress has fine comedic timing and she's genuinely funny.

  • I've got April (of Parks and Rec) vibes from Gina and Rosa, but Rosa is a better-written character. Her "badass bitch" act is awesome, and the heart deep down underneath her facade is even more awesome. Gina's heart — I don't know, I suppose she has one as well, but something doesn't feel right. I enjoy her coming-out arch.

  • I love the crazy Pimento. I hope to see him again.

Basically summed up a lot of my issues. I don't have issue with Latvia being an acceptable target... except it's never funny.

[up] I wonder if anyone finds the Latvia jokes funny? They have so many perfect jokes that this one feels really bland. Personally, making fun of post-Soviet countries rubs me the wrong way.

However, I enjoyed the Language Barrier joke with the Slavic woman who just desperately repeats "kanalizatsia", keeps drawing cookie pizza and tries showing them a toilet — though it seems pretty unrealistic. She could have used a cell phone. I bet she would have an app with a dictionary or something like that, or she would call someone she knows in New York who speaks English and would explain who she is so that they could get an interpreter. I'll excuse it with Rule of Funny. It had so many great moments.

I must say I love the Running Gag when they make fun of Canada Eh — perhaps because I think Canada is awesome (prosperous, nice and safe and only teeny tiny boring) and comparison with gritty but intriguing New York truly amuses me.

Speaking of national stereotypes, I did't much like the episode with the Swedish detectives. The set-up was great and the Rosa-Jake stuff was amazing (I love them having story-lines and their friendship is awesome). Some of the jokes were great in the episode. I like them as representation of Sexy Scandinavian, all tall and beautiful, but the over-sharing was so over-the-top and their closeness was almost disgusting and unprofessional — it was probably the point, but I like my Scandinavians icy and cold. I liked that they were supposed to be mean jerks, but something didn't work for me there.

Gina's character coming back reminded me why I don't want her in the series.

I like Gina best in small doses, that said it was already too much Gina when i saw a still image of her from the preview... I couldnĀ“t make it through the episode, had to turn it off after maybe 1-2 minutes of Gina, the series is so much better without her character

Wow.

I thought seeing Gina again after about half a season long absence would actually soften my opinion on her.

But no, it once again reminded me how much of a massive bitch she is and by God am I glad that she is not returning.

Oh, and that G-Hive thing? That thing is just a couple of steps away from being a cult.

This was actually probably the first episode that I did not genuinely enjoy.

Too many plots? Gina/Jake/Terry + Holt/Charles/Nik + Rosa/Amy — well, three plots is not that many, but they all were odd and not connected in any way. And they were weak. This show is brilliant, so...

I was looking forward to seeing Gina again, but this was too much. Such success after she left her job with no concrete plan without struggle? I don't buy it. So much character shilling? Again? Why? She gets seriously injured? Again? And what about her baby? Is little Enigma stuck with a nanny all the time? Not even Jake and Terry's cuteness saved this plot.

I usually love Amy/Rosa pairing, but this was meh. I laughed maybe once.

Holt and Charles — I don't know. The ending was sweet, Holt complimenting Charles's parenting skills, but otherwise it felt mean. Again, I laughed once — apparently, Charles' strictest punishment is "Nikolaj, I love you" said in a fairly stern way. That was so very Charles-like.

Le sigh. (But it was not horrible, nor did it ruin characters in any way, so that's good.)

So:

  • Jeffords is now Lt. Jeffords. Good on him!
  • From next Heist episodes and on, I guess we can expect Kevin to participate in the Heist as well, huh?
  • Also, Scully has a twin? Weirdsy.
  • Lastly, who's willing to bet that by the end of this season, Amy will actually get pregnant? evil grin

"Here is a positive pregnancy test and a sonogram of your fetus. Congratulations. It's a girl." is one of those beautiful gags that works solely through Holt's character and Baugher's delivery.

It was the most insane Gambit Pileup heist so far, though I prefer III and V because the jokes landed better.

I am pretty hyped to see how throwing in Kevin into the mix will go next season and to see how this complicates the Cheddar factor even further.

Everyone was talking about Gina, but for me, Boyle is the one I want gone the most. Just reminds me too much of some real life people and their problematic ways, whenever he's talking about Jake or resenting Amy, for me to enjoy the character at all.

Yeah, Boyle...constantly makes me want to punch him in the face, especially whenever he goes all Boyle on food, sex, and (shudders) both at the same time.

Diaz: I need a recommendation for a good restaurant.

Boyle: Classic, romantic? Or gastro-sensuous?

Diaz: Ugh, nevermind.

When Boyle said the last bit, I actually wanted to slap him because holy shit who the hell says that.

Just a random post:

I was actually introduced to Andy Samberg with B99, rather than Lonely Island or SNL. As such, when I watched this clip, I can't help myself but imagining this as Jake Peralta's Imagine Spot (although it will probably feature Terry Crews rather than The Rock). [lol]

Dammit, he was a good boy. Anyway, still haven't seen the MeToo episode with Amy yet, probably will tomorrow, but seeing how B99 has handled social issues before, I hope I'm not wrong in expecting a solid episode that handles the matter consciously and appropriately.

I consider it pretty similar to the "MooMoo" episode and Black Lives Matter, it doesn't necessarily cover all the nuances of the subject matter but for something that is a functionally impossible-to-please-everyone idea it manages to do so without making it offensively simplified. The active shooter episode might have gone horribly wrong but I think they recognized that trying to explain or replicate the event itself would have made it too sensational for the show, and so the actual issues are mostly ignored.
