Meh. There's a lot of political capital spent on this in the Asia-Pacific. Might get a few political crises if it doesn't go through.

Then perhaps say that instead of implying there's some kind of evil supervillain plot about?

Beyong name calling do you have any actual evidence or logic for your claim that Hillary will flip?

Exhibit A.

She picked an advocate of TPP and Fracking as her personal "set up the White House for her reign" party. Also she chose a voter of fast tracking TPP as her vice president.

Kaine was probably chosen for his appeal to swing states, Hispanics, moderates and disaffected conservatives. He's got more on his resume than TPP support.

[up][up]Does the Vice President's opinion matter (as an Australian I genuinely don't know)?

Not particularly, I mean he has influence and a fancy title but he can't actually order anything or propose anything, his job consists of having a working heart and that's it.

As for why he was picked, appeal to Hispanics and Virginians seems much more likely, that and he's a solid middle of the road Dem in general.

Also worth noting that if memory serves, Kaine did change is opinion about TPP shortly before or after the pick.

Germany's economy minister - U.S.-EU free trade talks have failed, as expected.

Germany's Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Sunday that talks on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), a free trade deal being negotiated by the United States and the European Union, had essentially failed.

"The negotiations with the USA have de facto failed because we Europeans did not want to subject ourselves to American demands," he said, according to a written transcript from German broadcaster ZDF of an interview due to be broadcast on Sunday.

"Things are not moving on that front," said Gabriel, who is also Germany's vice chancellor.

The U.S. and the EU have been negotiating the TTIP for three years and both sides had sought to conclude talks in 2016 but they have differences over various issues, including agriculture.

While we'll probably never know, I'd say all the usual suspects. The ISDS, customer protection etc. were all parts in which neither side were willing to budge.

And in the end, they are what killed this trade deal. The sadder part is that they'll not even acknowledge that adding unnecessary copyright laws or a system where an entire country could get sued for trying to protect their civilians if it cuts into profits is what dragged TPP down. They'll just blame it on the generation that will inevitably replace them.

I wouldn't be so sure. It depends on whether the next generation will be more protectionist...

An interesting note, Bernie Sanders in an interview, confirms why Obama is behind the TPP, based on conversations with one another:

Obama sees it as a Geopolitical weapon, rather than a job generator. The deal, in Obama's eyes, is solely political, to prevent China from gaining undo influence in Asia.

But then, why put ISDS and SOPA/PIPA in it?

That's old hat news, Bernie...

We already know that these treaties are geopolitical in nature.

Old news for you but most people here were baffled why the President was backing a corporatist trade deal that ran counter to many of his personal policies and beliefs.

But then, why put ISDS and SOPA/PIPA in it?
Corporations liked it and it got cross-country support.

The geopolitical function of these treaties has been discussed and commented on extensively.

Yes, and while it's obvious to you, it's nice to have it actually stated it was the case rather than staring into a Black Box.

You can argue it was the obvious but plenty of people here were still baffled.
