Well, for The Pogues, a straight answer is Fairytale of New York. Then there's also Love You 'Till the End, which is possibly even less associated with the band.
Deep into that darkness, peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.OneRepublic's most popular song is easily "Apologize" (which, apparently, is also the second most legally downloaded song ever).
Peace is the only battle worth waging.

Deep Purple's most well-known song is Smoke on the Water.

Batman Ninja more like Batman's Bizarre AdventureI decided to turn this into kind of an experiment - I'm gonna use the top five artists I've listened to most according to my last.fm, pick what I think their most well-known song is, and see if it matches with what their most played song by last.fm listeners as a whole is:
Weezer: My pick is "Buddy Holly"... Which on last.fm is their second most popular song, the first being "Island In The Sun". I did consider that a Green Album track could be up there, since there's sort of a Broken Base between fans of their 90's albums and ones who first heard them on their albums from 2001 and beyond.
David Bowie: My pick is "Space Oddity", which is the third most played on last.fm - "Ziggy Stardust" and "Starman" are the first and second most popular, respectively. But I still think I'm right in that you could probably hum a bit of "Space Oddity" to someone who otherwise knows nothing about him and they'd probably at least somewhat recognize it.
The Beatles: Tough choice because they have many really popular songs, but I'm going to say "Hey Jude". But the most-played last.fm track is "Come Together", which I find mildly surprising. On last.fm's list, "Hey Jude" is actually number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine...
Beck: Gotta be "Loser", or maybe "Where It's At". And this is the first one where last.fm and my perception match up, though "Where It's At" is less popular than I thought at number six.
Devo: "Whip It", of course. Last.fm has that one winning by a large margin, which makes sense because of these artists they're the only ones who could be tagged a One-Hit Wonder. "Mongoloid" is the second-most played, but it has about half the plays "Whip It" does.

Electric Six - "Gay Bar" it's not their only hit, or even their highest charting hit, but it seems to be the most popular worldwide.
Put me in motion, drink the potion, use the lotion, drain the ocean, cause commotion, fake devotion, entertain a notion, be Nova ScotianHmm.
- Bugskull: I have no idea. Maybe "Seguara".
- Coil: That slow, dour cover of "Tainted Love", probably, followed by some of their dancier singles: "The Snow", "Windowpane". Stretching definitions, they are responsible for the remix of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" that opens the film Se7en.
- The Olivia Tremor Control: "The Opera House", in all likelihood.
- Swans: Probably "God Damn the Sun", although the title of "Raping a Slave" is decidedly more infamous than the track itself. Gira's work as Angels of Light is decidedly more obscure, although there are probably a scant handful of people out there who've heard "Untitled Love Song".
- Wire: "12XU", to my chagrin. Great track, but they have better.
Since I happen to have lastfm open, I'll follow a path similar to Mike K's, with guess, lastfm, and my personal favourite:
- New Order: I'd guess Blue Monday. And the masses say... Blue Monday! My personal pick would be We All Stand, though in truth my favourite New Order song tends to be whichever I'm listening to at the moment.
- The Cure: Tough. I'd guess... Love Song? Spake the proles, Friday I'm in Love. Love Song was number 4. My favourite would be Watching Me Fall, from the Bloodflowers album.
- Sneaker Pimps: Six Underground, no bets. And it is Six Underground. My choice would be Destroying Angel, or maybe Clean.
- Catherine Wheel: Black Metallic, again, not a penny against it. And well done me, cos it's Black Metallic. My pick would be Descending Babe.
- Echo And The Bunnymen: Ooh, err... Lips Like Sugar is a perennial soundtrack choice, I'll go with that. Survey says... The Killing Moon by a landslide! Lips Like Sugar was number 2 by quite a distance. For me, erm... Almost as bad as picking a favourite New Order song, but I've spent a lot more time thinking about that one... Parthenon Drive from Siberia? Or Drivetime from The Fountain? According to lastfm, the song I've listened to the most is their cover of All You Need Is Love, which is quite nice, Ian turns it into a medley at the end and.. I can live with that.
Aight, here we go:
Florence And The Machine: "Dog Days Are Over", no doubt. Maybe "Shake It Out", but...yeah, it's "Dog Days Are Over".
Lady Gaga: Tough, but the answer's probably Bad Romance.
Emilie Autumn: Also tough, but for the opposite reason of Gaga. They never play her. The answer would probably be either "Opheliac" (album namer) "Shalott" (plays it live a lot) and "Dead Is The New Alive" (that one remix showed up in a Saw movie)

What would you say the most well-known songs by your fav bands are? Not their best song, or even their most popular song, but a song that people will easily recognize (even if they dont know the artist). For example, Alice Cooper's most well-known song is likely "School's Out". Granted, a lot of that is due to heavy use of it in movies and tv shows, but it still counts. EDIT: On a side note, right after i made this post i turned on the radio, and what should be playing, but "Schools Out".
