The girl who traveled through time and space:

The season is summer. The season of the blazing sun. Chiyuri Kitashirakawa can easily nab a part time job or two. However, in a world where kids like her are super smart and are capable of getting jobs anywhere, she thought it too boring and generic to bother. She was looking for something unique, something that easily stands above everything else.

Then, she remembers hearing something about a professor being laughed to scorn due to spouting ridiculous nonsense about magic being real. With a gleam in her eyes, Chiyuri decided to help this professor realize her dream. After all, she's a believer in magic too.

...No. She's just lying to herself. Why do you need magic when science already makes the impossible possible? Deep down, she's going to assist this professor in her foolhardy project, not only because it's unique, but also because it amuses her to see a believer of magic in this day and age.

As she worked with Yumemi, Chiyuri saw up close her passion to make this theory work. Somewhere down the road, Chiyuri stopped looking at her with ridicule. Now, she's looking at her with admiration. She just couldn't mock this woman's drive any longer.

Eventually, they did it! They found a dimension that was sure to have magic as its main source of power. Chiyuri could not contain her excitement. But, in order to truly convince this world, they needed to bag a specimen. And thus, diving through the sea of space-time, they arrived in Gensokyo.

By the time of their arrival, Chiyuri was very enthusiastic. She made posters to pull in potential specimens. She also did things she thought she would never do, like using a gun! But the biggest shock to her system was seeing an identical version of herself in this land of magic. This must be destiny, she thought!

Eventually, the dream that seemed to go on forever ended with them returning empty-handed. However, Chiyuri remained upbeat and became even more enthusiastic than before. She may have caused Yumemi trouble, but from the bottom of her heart, she thanked her for changing her worldview. At the end of the day, this summer will forever be burned into Chiyuri Kitashirakawa's memories.

You know, I do like the idea that Chiyuri originally joined with Yumemi to kill time or out of obligation if they knew each other before that and viewed her and her ideas as a joke, but gradually came around and though "hey, she might have a point", eventually coming around full gung ho.

Well, enough to take a ride into an alternate dimension in search of proof.

Wonder how many they went through before landing in Gensokyo? Did they do the whole fighting tournament thing somewhere else only to find that all the contestants were using boring old psychic powers instead of real magic?

How exactly did she get time and teleportation powers anyway? Is all this just Yumemi's pseudeo-magic? If she can do stuff like this, why do they need real magic again?

See, that's exactly why Rikako said.

The Gensoukyou Chiyuri has it too I guess.

Two identical strangers from different worlds, achieving the same effects through diametrically-opposed methodologies. There's something profound here, I know it!

Yuyuko: two weeks to move on

Chiyuri: someone wanting to move on in three days.

Relax, Hylarn's just doing his job. Largely because I don't do that job, I suppose.

This here the problem with the PC-98 crowd, characters that just can't fuel a discussion as long as the ones from the Windows games. Stick a ton of these girls together and you can see why we had the bright idea to shuffle everyone together, try to space these less productive periods apart.

At the end of the day, this summer will forever be burned into Chiyuri Kitashirakawa's memories.

But because she didn't clear it with her committee beforehand, it won't count as her practicum.

Still a sweet write-up though.

I wonder if Chiyuri and Yumemi aren't dimension travelers so much as time-travelers from the outside world.

Basically, from the same general era as Maribel and Renko.

Some fanworks take that tack in order to consolidate cast herds. Some even put Sanae into the same time period with Maribel and Renko but not Yumemi and Chiyuri as far as I recall.

I dunno. Yumemi and Chiyuri seem far too...sci fi? While there are noticable advances in the Mary and Renko future, the setting itself seems rather down to Earth. It is enough like the present that the changes really stick with you.

In contrast, the Yumemi and Chiyuri world has folks graduating from collage at 13, dimension traveling ship-ruins, and laser guns.

I have seen Yumemi and Chiyuri used a supporting cast for Mary/Renko stories, just not often. Though they didn't seem to be the same Yumemi and Chiyuri

A strange thing is Chiyuri refers to Yumemi as 御主人様 goshujin-sama "Master", as if she is her servant. Not sure what to make of that. Maybe ZUN simply wanted a character to use this phrase?

Maybe Yumemi always wanted a personal maid, so she forced Chiyuri to say 'Master'. Maybe it's more of a personal favornote . Doing so would give Chiyuri a bigger slice of the money they would receive once they reach the big times.

Too bad Chiyuri's bad at making good tea.tongue

Clearly academia is much different in the future.

Like how everybody goes into the liberal arts because science is tapped out.

For that matter, it may even be a dying field as a whole. I mean, one of the serious limiting factors of current knowledge and progress is how long people can actively work in their field. 30ish years of schooling to 'catch up' to where the field is now slows research down a lot... and that's only within a certain field. So for 13 (Or even 18) year old college graduates to be the norm, something's got to change.

Either far more effective education methods, genetic tampering to make genius-babies, or a much, much narrower field of focus, and no more breadth of focus in education at all.

The last would perhaps imply the most interesting thing for Chiyuri. Namely, that while she may be an expert in such things as interdimensional travel and the metaphysics of teleportation and quantum entanglement... she doesn't know that, for instance, oxygen is the stuff in air that's really important for us... or what else might even be in the air. It's just outside her field of focus. Clearly, someone with a more obvious biology or chemistry focus would be who to talk to about that.

It leads one to believe that there would be much better cross-talk between disciplines (As a necessity. Perhaps some people are 'engineers' who trail years or decades behind the cutting edge, but are exposed to multiple fields of study, more like our modern education), or alternatively that science has gone in a very, very different direction. Perhaps in their world there is magic, and its used often... but physicists don't even know it exists, and laugh it off as nonsense (With Magicians being equally dismissive of that silly 'science' garbage).

I write some fanfiction. Satori's Tale is done... but I'm not.

Write-up:
Our heroine. Reimu's the miko of the Hakurei Shrine, a position that involves maintaining the magical border that allows Gensokyo to exist, and exterminating any youkai or other troublemakers. The inherent conflict between these roles is why Gensokyo's battles take the form of nonlethal spell card duels.

Beyond the abilities granted as the Hakurei Shrine Maiden, Reimu possesses natural powers regarding flight and manipulating barriers, which is good because she hates to train. Despite her love of loafing, Reimu's serious about her job as a youkai buster, but she's unusually tolerant of them afterward - one of her personality quirks is that she treats everyone, from humans to youkai to gods, with the same amount of disrespect. As a result, the Hakurei Shrine has a reputation as a youkai hangout, and an increasing number of supernatural entities can mark the start of their friendships with Reimu with the time she threw a yin-yang orb at their face.

Deep down, though, Reimu wants to live in a Gensokyo where everyone can coexist peacefully. That dream will probably have to wait until after the last Touhou game.

Relations

  • Marisa Kirisame (probably bestie)
  • Sanae Kochiya (fellow/rival miko)
  • Yukari Yakumo (similar border-related person)
  • Suika Ibuki (freeloading booze hound)
  • Byakuren Hijiri (friendly religious rival)
  • Aya Shameimaru (no solicitations, please)
  • Kasen Ibaraki (part-time mentor)
  • Rinnosuke Morichika (wants her to pay her tab)
  • The Three Fairies of Light (neighbors, nuisance)
  • Genji (former steed, ignored counselor)
  • Mima (even when she breaks free, she hangs around and makes a nuisance of herself)
  • Ruukoto (wait, which robot maid was she again?)
  • VIVIT (wasted a trip)
  • Hakurei Shrine Deity (...who?)
  • and many more!

I think Reimu's main thing is the she doesn't believe in effort. Even in danmaku this shows up; lots of wide spreads and homing shots, which doesn't require aiming. In her day to day life we see her refuse to train and only ever try to make money through a variety of get-rich-quick schemes (because if something doesn't work initially, it isn't going to at all)

And this is probably part of the reason for her attitude to youkai extermination: If she beat them they're clearly weaker than her and will lose any other time they fight her, and now that they know this they'll never try anything again. And somehow or another, reality seems to have validated this belief

Unless Scarlet route is a thing in which case Reimu beat Remilia and then later Remilia beat Reimu. But she did double team her. But someone once said that the double teaming thing in IN doesn't actually matter. So dunnae.

And anyone can kick her in the head in the fighting game.

Edit: And Remilia never stopped trying things. Soooo who knows.
