She went AWOL before she got drafted into the military. Her drafting was punishment for abandoning her old job of pounding mochi and such.
Of course, her role in the military is to basically cheerleader and serve as the Watatsuki's messenger, so it's not like she is in any mortal peril. (Yorihime at least attempts to teach them to fight, but we are talking moon rabbits here)

Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.Episode #### in 'Metaphors are fun!'
Imagine, if you will, that your homeland is under attack by a terrible invading force. Completely merciless, there is no doubt that the attackers will destroy every last one of your people. Fortunately, the art of making seaworthy vessels and using them is new even in your own society, and unheard of among theirs.
So you load your family on a boat and set out. When you arrive, the natives are primitive people who haven't even developed agriculture, but are more than willing to let you move in, recognizing your superiority implicitly. Your two peoples get along well, even getting to the point where they ask if they can help you at all.
They can't (And are in fact likely to damage just about anything they touch since they don't know how it works) but you have them start washing the now-landlocked boat you came over in just so they don't feel bad.
The "You" is Eirin and the other initial Lunarians, the attackers are impurity, and the rest should fall into place. Extending the metaphor to include Kaguya's exile back to the land of the pillaging murderers (Yeah, enjoy your time with the marauders, little miss 'can't die') and the suspicion of Eirin when she fails to return is easy enough (She hasn't returned because she's teaching them how to make boats! They're going to come over here and we're all going to die!)
I write some fanfiction. Satori's Tale is done... but I'm not.But if the moon is super speshul pure, and the bunnies are native to the moon, but the Lunarians immigrated there from the Earth, wouldn't that make the bunnies more pure than their Lunarian overlords?
She's too damn generic, so we get drawn into discussions of the moon. Damn moon.
Though I am curious about the wiki's claim regarding Reiisen's personality being similar to Reisen's fanon characterization. I'm just not seeing it, I guess.
Also, I've been reading Inaba x 2 again, and in an amazing coincidence reached this part
when this discussion started.
I suspect so. The Watatsuki's admit that the moon isn't 100% superspecial pure anymore. I think Eirin mentions at some point that despite her best efforts, the born-of-earth Lunarians carried some impurity with them. Of course at this point its probably 'settled over' both races fairly evenly.
But a major point is that the Lunarians didn't kill the rabbits, probably cause, you know, escaping that sort of evolutionary expansionist killing was their entire reason for going to the moon. And the rabbits probably didn't kill the invaders because they simply had no real concept of death at all. "They're here, so I guess they're here to stay."
I guess the fanon image their talking about is her being all reserved and quiet and armed with a gun? Because they sure aren't talking about her 'only good for sex appeal'.
Raysen is substantially less competent than Udonge, which... is... really kinda sad. "I'm here to spy on you!"
The Civilian Soldier
Every world needs the everybodies, and Raysen honestly one of the very few 'nameless npcs' we get a look into the mind of. Heck, she's on the very small list of people who've had first person narrations (Since, you know... CILR, COLA and Seasonal dream vision are it, apart from an odd thought bubble here and there.) It really gives a sense of how normals see danmaku, and how the rabbits see the Watatsukis.
For all her moaning and complaining, she still idolizes Yorihime because dammit she's good at what she does, and she makes it look good.
It also shows us that the rabbits don't resent the Lunarians. They are for their part happy with their lot in life, and for some, free will isn't nearly as important as being happy. They work 9 to five, go home, chat up with their family and friends, and enjoy a good drink. Do they need anything more in life?
Some of them, like Raysen, do. They get recruited into things like the Lunar Defense Corps, gaining responsibility and status. For some, that's enough. For Reisen, it wasn't.
Raysen reveals to us the perspective of a noncombatant. And unlike Rinnosuke, Raysen is thrust into combat despite this. Sanae may be concerned about being brought down to normal... becoming 'just another somebody', but Raysen and countless other, on the moon and earth alike, have to content themselves with being 'forever nobodies.'
And you know, maybe, just maybe, she's the most down to Earth, relatable character we've seen. When combat looms over her, unlike the other characters... she not the apathy and vague disinterest that Reimu has, not the eager anticipation of Marisa, not the fervent loyalty of Sakuya and Youmu, and not the curiosity and enthusiasm of Sanae.
She feels fear. She wonders how it all came to this, and wishes things were just peaceful again.
So I maintain that she deserves a serious pat on the back, despite her failings. Because unlike so very much of the cast, she really, really needs one.

I write some fanfiction. Satori's Tale is done... but I'm not. With a Reimu in the reactor, a handful of old magazines, and grit and grace, boyo.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAnd Sanae shoots stars at people.
Heh. I bet she was pissed about missing the moon trip.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersBut...the moon trip happened before Sanae's arrival, right?
Then again, she would be very surprised to know that Reimu went to the moon, and that she missed an golden opportunity to go on a space field trip.
With all the things Rei witnessed and experienced, she, if she gets proper reading and writing skills, could be a best-selling author. 'The Trials of a Normal Moon Rabbit' would be a blazing hit among the Lunarian masses.
MOF is referenced in SSIB, prior to liftoff.
Sanae appears at Remilia's nyah nyah moon party.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIts not Reimu you needed to shmooze up to, it was Remilia.
Hell, Marisa got on the rocket on sheer insistance/main character power alone. If you let Marisa on your moon rocket, you're probably not being very selective. Because you just agreed to spend several weeks in close confines with Marisa.

I read Reisen's CiLR chapter.
She sure is there I guess. She seems somewhat cowardly and second guesses herself a lot I guess but...she still doesn't stand out to me. Sorry. I still got nothing.
