About that...
Gods can survive on belief alone. As long as people accept that she is a god, she can continue to exist as one. At least, I think that's how it works
That's my understanding. Her faith is probably mostly from outsiders still though, since in Gensokyo she's... well... not particularly notable apart from being a gopher for Kanako/Suwako. But to outsiders she's that "person who ran the shrine on that hill! You know, the one that performed honest-to-goodness miracles before it mysteriously vanished: lake, shrine maiden and all." (Or maybe just she mysteriously vanished.
Either way, her classmates are probably like "So what ever happened to that mecha otaku science geek girl that dyed her hair green all the time?")

I write some fanfiction. Satori's Tale is done... but I'm not.I imagine Faith mechanics work differently on the inside of the Border. Gensokyo is the fantasy land, a wildlife sanctuary for the supernatural, with more gods and spirits and ghosts running about than you can shake a purification rod at. So it's probably hard to properly believe in a god that is quite obviously flying around in front of you, unlike an entity in the outside world that you never meet but may possibly be responsible for some good fortune that followed your prayers. It's a cheaper version of faith, in other words.
On the other hand, because the land is so saturated in the magical, it's probably much easier for a deity to survive, even on this paltry "I guess god's my neighbor" sort of faith. Or else I wouldn't be surprised if the powers that be have worked out some sort of divine minimum wage going on to make sure everyone gets by without starting a fierce melee for the resident humans' attention. How else can you explain someone like Shizuha surviving?
As for what this means for Sanae, it might explain her godly status - she's not getting as much faith as she used to since everyone now knows her miracles come from other deities, but she had enough to start with that she's able to qualify for faith stamps and maintain her arahitogami status, if barely.
That was a theory. This is an arts.

I'm still sorta busy with work.
>Komachi's pronoun
The pronoun "atai" can occur for:
- 1. Used by children who can't pronounce "watashi" well. This is the case with Cirno's "eye'm the strongest".
- 2. Used by Edo era courtesans.
Recently I've been told that there's also a third case:
- 3. Used in the dialect of Edo City's Shimomachi (commoners' district) residents.
Edo, as you know, is the Edo era's capital city, a center of commerce. The commoners of Shimomachi are adventurous, roguish and tough, a fact touched upon in Retrospective 53 minutes
. One of Komachi's main motif is that of the Edokko: a boisterous urban dweller who blows all their earnings on entertainment, sparing nothing for tomorrow.

Stop atrican from crawling out of the dumpster! Touhou status updatesReminds me we haven't talked much about Sanae's time outside of Gensokyo. Really, it's kinda odd how little she dwells on it (i.e. not even a little bit from what we see).
Also, I don't think Sanae sees youkai the same way Reimu does. To Reimu's eyes, they're monsters; to Sanae's, they're neighbors or playmates or subordinates. This is why I don't 'penalize' Sanae for fraternizing with them as I do Reimu. Sanae sees them as people (And probably remains largely ignorant of any human-murder-shenganigans they get up to). Reimu sees them as obstacles or tools. Further, while Reimu's duty revolves around Youkai extermination (because of Hakurei God's blessings of choice), Sanae's doesn't: her goddesses are like "Sure if you want to go youkai busting have a blast, but don't forget you have a job to do, too."
So its not so bad that Sanae might buddy up to the tengu/kappa/other youkai, while it's still terrible for Reimu to. In my mind, what Reimu's doing RE: failings would be like Sanae renouncing Kanako and Suwako entirely, and chasing away any who tried to worship at the shrine.
Dunno why she's all worried. Its not like she lives on a mountain full of an entire culture of paparazzi, in the middle of a civilization that promotes that culture. note
Also, I don't know why but I think the business-tie thing she wears is odd. I can't unimagine it curling up like Dilberts/like a snake.

I write some fanfiction. Satori's Tale is done... but I'm not.
Wait, I'm pretty sure I read up somewhere about how Reimu treats both humans and youkai the same way, or something?
Well, as a high school girl suddenly transported into a magical place like Gensokyo, guess she'd view the youkais and all as part of a parade, or an attraction, quirky people she could have fun with.
"And you must be Jonathan Joestar!" - SueReimu treats them both with mild disdain and looks down on them both.
Meanwhile, Sanae seems pretty cool with both humans and youkai. Part of it is her not "getting it", but she is proud of her humanity and wants to connect with the humans, while she is fine with har youkai unless they actively threaten humans (...or do things she perceives as active threats to humans). Or at least, that's how I see it.

Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.Reimu explicitly thinks of youkai as people, even though she's not supposed to, and only fights them because it's her job.
Sanae beats up youkai even though she's not supposed to, and gets along with them because it's her job. Mostly her racism is pretty passive (at You Are a Credit to Your Race levels), but it is visible - see her fight with Kyouko for instance ("Could it be that you're a youkai? Oh, thank goodness... I was worried I was fighting a monk.").
edited 28th Dec '13 8:47:30 AM by Prime32
What? It's not like Sanae goes out of her way to beat up youkai or anything. She was explicitly sent out youkai hunting by Kanako in UFO and was explicitly sent to investigate the incident in TD.
I'd put her youkai hunting as frequent as Reimu's. Maybe slightly more since she has someone to bug her to go do it more often.

Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.Reimu has disdain for just about anyone but Sanae seems more like a outsider/foreigner out of place with the culture of Gensokyo. Sanae is from the outside from the world and she only recetnly appeared in Gensokyo although I would like to think by DDC she might be familiar with the mechanics as well as the culture a little bit.

"Fan, a Mega Man character."Well, I didn't know this tidbit.
Sanae's Ten Desires profile says that she was afraid of the youkai at first, so much that she couldn't do her duties properly. Then again, moving to a new place can be a scary experience.
I'm just glad she's accustomed to Gensokyan life nowadays.
About how her peers may have viewed her... Sanae's main interests are things guys are usually interested in. So they may have been weirded out by that. Not that she's interested in the opinions of others.
Surely she must have been in clubs like science and/or anime/manga before the move.
I dunno, a cute girl who shares an interest in giant robots might be pretty popular, at least among the opposite gender.
Anime club more than science club, I'd wager; rational thinking is great and all, but Sanae is quite familiar with two deities and worshiped as one herself by certain people. That sort of thing could make the laws of thermodynamics difficult to take seriously.
Interesting! So has that stereotype survived the city's renaming, or do they call such savings-challenged individuals Tokyokko now?
If you wanna paint it grimdark, take this to mean that she'd rather not remember her life in the outside world. But judging from some of her comments:
"Yes, well, it's been 40 years since humans landed on the moon, and we haven't even made it to Mars yet. Everyone said the 21st century would be the age of space flight, but... All they're worrying about outside is saving the environment and figuring out how to keep the economy afloat. It's just crazy. The world's full of people who don't even think about why they're here. Compared to that, Gensokyo is a dream land."
maybe she's given up on Mundania for failing to live up to her standards, and is willing to put up with her new home's "eccentricities" like youkai trying to eat people.
That's three "___ up" compound verbs in the same sentence, awkward.
Or maybe like costumed mascots at an amusement park? All part of the show, something to take delight in but not quite "real," leading to ensuing hilarity when Sanae forgets that youkai can be kinda dangerous man-eating monsters sometimes.
Familiar enough to recognize that she's in a video game ("those charms with 'P' and 'point' written on them") by UFO, anyway.

Oh geez! I just had a thought RE: Kanako's faith crisis. So, you know how people are always complaining how weather forecasts are 'always' wrong? Well dammit, Kanako words hard to make that happen! And then everyone just thinks the meteorologists are bad at their jobs, rather than the obviously true reason of a god manipulating the weather. People nowadays, I tell you! Even when faced with direct evidence of divine intervention, they just assume human error is the cause. Harrumph. No spirit at all.
"Hey, Kanako, I thing these eggs are seriously bad! They smell like they're covered in poo!"
"Oh, no. Those are Shirikodama."
"Eagh!" <Drops the load>
"Great, now the Kappa have to harvest another dozen from people. You know anyone from your old school you really wished were dead? Just, you know. Saying."
Man, that quote is kinda weird. I don't think its the first 4th wall breaking in windows, but it's definately the only one I can remember. Its possible That Sanae-in-youkai-hunting-mode is honest to god insane and just sees blood as Power ups and sweat as point items ("I'm at full Power!" As she's completely covered in fairy viscera). Its also possible that point and power items exist in universe and holy smokes is that a can of worms making the spellcard rules suddenly a seriously complicated thing. Like... oh man. Obviously it was just meant to be an amusing 4th wall breaking comment, but... gotta be careful with those.
Can you imagine explaining this to Byakuren?
"Ok, so you just make your attacks into declarations like so. Simple, right? And you need to assign point values to each one in case I clear it without getting hit or using a spellcard of my own. And then when its defeated, you throw out like twenty to thirty of these blue point cards, and fifty to a hundred of these red power items. After I collect four hundred of them, I can use my 'full' power. I'm already at 357 (And wow is it ever hard counting them all up when you collect them in chunks of 31 or so), and when I'm hit, I drop exactly 100, and-"
"How long is this going to take?"
"Oh, explaining should just take a couple hours. Then probably a day or so for you to think up appropriate values and such, and making all those cards takes some time, too, you know."
Several days later:
"Alright, I'm ready. Omen in purple mist!"
<Pichuun> "Ah shucks. Well, I only had the one life and no bombs, so I'm not surprised. Well, can't win 'em all, right? Guess I'll see you later."
"AAAARRRRRGH!"
Cue Sanae's bad end, roll credits.

Write-up:
Straight from the pages of Hatarakimono comes Ellen Fuwafuwaatama Aureus, who somehow wound up in Gensokyo in time to battle for the right to explore some mysterious "ruins" that can make all her wishes come true.
Though she will never grow old, Ellen remains eternally childish due to forgetting things quickly. An exception to this memory loss would seem to be magic - Ellen is a witch capable of throwing down with the best of them. Beyond that, well, it'd probably be helpful to have a copy of her native manga.
If you were wondering what her dream was, apparently it's to open up "Fluffy Ellen's Magic Shop" on Hakurei Shrine property.

She hates rules of any kind, and won't hesitate to cheat in any kind of event, if she remembers she's in one.
She isn't all subtle in anything she does, and doesn't grasp the concept of secrets.

Speaking of Arahitogami where does Sanae get faith for herself? It isn't as though that she has followers in Gensokyo or is there any other way to get faith for herself and the Moriya shrine?
