Huh, I thought Junko provided the grudge and Hecatia did most of the actual planning and heavy lifting. But that might have been that giselebon comic.
Anyway, let's leave Junko to her hobby. Coming up will be Sagume, Ringo, and a piece of crockery. But first,

Write-up:
A very specialized goddess who in many ways doesn't act like a goddess at all, since she has no shrines, gathers no faith, and most people in fact avoid talking about her. When humans ritualistically purge themselves of ill fortune by floating nagashi-bina dolls down a river, Hina collects them and drains away all that cast-off bad luck before it can harm others.
Unfortunately, being a sponge for misfortune means that simply being near Hina can be hazardous, and people have come up with a whole list of taboos and rituals to avoid interacting with her. As a result, she spends most of her time alone in the forested foothills of the Youkai Mountain, and occasionally chases away a foolish human who tries to trespass in such dangerous terrain. Another useful but thankless service, in other words, but someone's got to do it.

So where did Hina come from? I'm not familiar with the whole "floating the doll containing your bad juju down the river" ritual, so was there always an expectation that someone would safely dispose of them once they drifted out of your life? Did she spontaneously spring into existence because there was enough divine energy around to generate someone who could serve that role? Was she appointed by one of the powers that be? Or was she something else before she volunteered for that role?
Or I guess she could be a nagashi-bina tsukumogami like we speculated last time around, but that doesn't seem as interesting.
Hina Kagiyama:
A goddess(?) that specializes in collecting the negative aura of Gensokyan humanity. Likes spinning.
Hina collects dolls imbued with negative emotions, and takes them into her. ...But she's not really a good container, is she? I wonder if those dolls are better containers? Oh wait, she takes the curses into her so that the dolls themselves don't transform into entities that would most definitely cause trouble. So bad container or not, Hina has to do this job.
Wonder why she loves spinning. Maybe that's how she collects the negative aura. And maybe that's why it leaks out. How double-edged.
...But where did Hina come from? Perhaps she to was cast down a river and became a sentient doll filled with negative emotions. She hated the negativity, so she tried to excise it. But no matter what, she just seemed to attract all the negativity that came her way from her fellow non-sentient dolls. Like, she's carrying their wishes or something(Yes, it's the feelings of the humans, just roll with it.
). Hm, since she constantly collects and releases negativity, it's no wonder she's seen as a god. These curses are like offerings to her. But humans can not be allowed to meet her. Youkai Mountain and unchecked curses and all that.
In canon it seems unlikely, since none of them have a real reason to visit her usual place of operation. They might meet at one of those cameo-tastic parties at the Hakurei Shrine, assuming Hina's ever been sighted at one. Man, it'd be sad if she never got invited to parties. Though not surprising.
In fanon, well, there's nothing of Hina and Kokoro, very little
of Hina and Kogasa, a lot of Hina and
Medicine
, and
almost
as
much
of Hina and Alice.
Hina also spends most of "Alice's Tea Party"
sitting in the corner, reveling in all the misfortune happening in the series. I've seen that interpretation of her in other places too.
I think the dolls are like the hazardous materials transports and Hina is like that "this is not a place of honor" installation in New Mexico. Except she can move around, owns a business, and lingers near a major water supply. At any rate, it's probably safer to ship your misfortune out with those dolls than risk getting close to the bad luck waste dump.
Man, Hina really does leak misfortune, 'cause she totally borked this picdump - I'd get page after page that was 95% duplicate results. Which doesn't help when there's so little to work with to begin with.

Maybe she's classified as a god because the youkai want to keep their distance, don't want to be associated with her. But I guess she couldn't be banished underground like the other despised monsters because her job ties her to the surface.
Anyhoo, I'm getting the sense that we should probably move on to Sagume soon. Any final thoughts on that lonesome consumer of misfortune before we do so? Other than "wow, how is she not on Touhou's list of Woobies?" She performs a vital service but is shunned for it, making her perhaps the loneliest character in the series-
Wait, no, that's depressing. There is another path, the road to diabetes.
Oooh, thanks for that link to [FELT]'s remix, now I have a new circle to binge on.

She's probably an earthly god like the Aki sisters and Suwako are, though now that I think about it, how does she interact with Suwako since her sphere also includes curses?

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Well, I think Suwako controls the Mishaguji, and they're the ones who provide the curses, but then I suppose the question is where they get their misfortune.
Wait, no, Hina's not the source of misfortune, she's someone trying to safely dispose of it. So I guess her interactions with Suwako could boil down to a lot of grumbling about an increased work load thanks to a trigger-happy goddess. Unless Suwako's keen on recycling, and every month or so a girl in suspiciously nondescript clothes, sunglasses, and a big silly frog hat comes by to visit Hina and make a quiet little exchange.
Hina is corrupt?
Oh, the shocks and disappointments come one after another...
Tsk tsk
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWell, you know how environmentalism is all a big scam. She says she just wants to help out and safely dispose of hazardous materials, but it's all part of a plot.
Well, let's leave Hina to spin in solitude, which is best for us if bad for her social life. Coming up will be Ringo, Futo, and someone with a very modern fashion sense. But first, hold your tongue.

Write-up:
A denizen of the moon who possesses an ability that is potentially very powerful, and potentially very dangerous. Sagume isn't quite a god, or a departed soul, and is in a way similar to an amanojaku, though she's much more powerful than the likes of Seija. She was the architect behind the Lunarians' plan to invade and purify Gensokyo, but she also managed to wreck this plan with a few careful sentences.
Sagume has the ability to reverse a situation just by speaking about it, especially when talking to those involved, so that if she describes a plan to achieve something it will inevitably fail, while if she discusses a problem it will end up getting resolved. She's thus quite taciturn out of necessity, but when she does talk - such as when she explained the Lunarians' scheme to the protagonist and told her about the enemy attacking the Lunar Capital - her words can have profound consequences.
There's presumably a story behind that single wing of hers, but it might be dangerous for her to tell it.
Yeah, they got a similar ability, but they're at opposite ends of the power structure. Seija is all about overturning the current status quo, Sagume is so concerned about potentially undermining it that she tries to stay silent. Unless she can seize a moment to be tricksy and use her power as a sort of cosmic double negative to get rid of a situation she doesn't like.
But man, so many questions! Where did she come from? How'd she end up so that reality warps around her to disprove her points? Is she a Lunarian secret weapon they employ in emergencies, or the equivalent of an SCP being kept in their capital because she's too dangerous to go free? Both? And what is the deal with the wing?
I'm not sure if I caught the issue of Forbidden Scrollery she appears in, and so don't remember if it provided any additional information about her. If it did her wiki page doesn't have much to say beyond revealing the existence of a hair braid.
Sagume's "appearance" was only an illustration to represent characters talking about her and the Lunarians in general. She herself hasn't had any appearances other than her boss fight in LoLK and her visit to Eientei in AFiEU.
Anyway, Sagume's an interesting character to me. There's a tragic element to her power, but at the same time, that hasn't stopped her from earning a place among the Lunarian elite. I'm sure someone could make an inspirational story out of how she got where she is today.

Maybe it makes more sense to think of Hecatia as LoLK's real antagonist, and Junko as a satellite character of hers. Which may be a bigger shake-up to the old formula than DDC, since the midget at least as a place of her own outside of Reimu's bird house, and a motivation to do stuff in Gensokyo in the future. Though I suppose other characters could try to trick Junko into doing stuff by saying Chang'e would really hate it if she did x.
Anyway, any final thoughts on this pure fury, or shall we spin off to Hina in the near future?
