So Parsee is just a living grudge who gets jealous over anything and everything.

She's more envy, now, than woman, twisted and hateful. Someone whose all-too-human feelings of inadequacy and insecurity became her overriding emotions, until she became something monstrous, a creature unable to see anything other than ways she was worse off than someone else, compelling her to lash out at anyone she comes across.

That could be debatable. I feel Junko has the more legitimate reason for her transformation. I don't think being upset at people crossing a bridge really compares to Outliving One's Offspring.

Guess it depends on whether doing bad things for justified(?) reasons is better or worse than doing bad things because you had a seed of darkness within you that was able to grow.

Anyhoo, big jealous picdump.

You go through some caves, you come across an unexpected bridge, and there she is
Decent image of her from a fan game
Sketchy
Portrait
Something about that smile seems less than genuine
Could be the start of her "I Want" Song
Pout
Annoyance
Sad
Sadder
Sadness into anger
More anger
Maximized disgruntlement
Shocked
Berserker tears?
My guess is this is her Freak Out when she became what she is
What strange emotion is this?
A splash of flowers
It's a trap
Is that stigmata?
Think I recognize this artist
Parsee the Persian
Parsee the Sinister Butler
Probably symbolic
Maybe it's a case of multiple personality disorder or something
Guess there's cherry trees underground
Guess it can rain underground
Guess there's a dragon underground
Guess there are giant black tigers who don't mind pipe smoke underground
That scene from the Matrix.
That scene from At Chirei
Here we go
Danmaku out
Bah, who needs the big city...
Guess she is a ghost. Also, she's on the surface now
Not a happy person at all
I bet she approaches with her head tilted so her hair covers her eyes, until the reveal
She so crazy
A light in the darkness
Green-eyed cave goblin
Not the only artist to pick up on green tears
Okay, now she's Gollum
Persona!
She needs a support group.
Or a yin-yang to the face, that seems to resolve a lot of problems
In the middle of everything, but not a part of anything
You can just make her out on the outskirts
Eeeeeeshhh
An awkward time was had by all
Maybe alcohol isn't the solution
A fresh challenge - becoming jealous of a cat monster
Spread the green
Not a friend to all children
And here comes the pairing
Those uncomfortable dates where she spends the whole time crying
Flattery
Arts and crafts
Some joke about it being a cold day in Hell would fit this
Lonely Christmas? Denied
Her own worst enemy
Hold yourself together, girl
Streams of envy
More flowers
Aw hell yes
Green bubbles o' hate
Cute!
Not cute
Hard to be jealous in a penguin suit
When Paru-chan met Para-chan
There's no reason for this, but there's no reason for it to not exist either
Guess that's another solution
The envy will be with you, always

I wonder if Parsee can awaken jealously in other youkai and oddities?

[up][up] Oooh, that "Mythical Bridge" one was nice, and led to my current earworm. Good to hear some traditional instruments from time to time.

[up] Well, there's no mention of her ability being limited for use against only one species, so I'd assume it'd work on youkai too. Not sure why she'd need to prey upon her fellow youkai like that, though, since youkai are partially defined by an antagonistic relationship with humanity, not each other. Then again, maybe that's why she wound up underground - a shunned youkai who afflicted her own kind with un-youkai-like insecurities.

But if Parsee does indeed incite jealousy in other youkai, it strikes me, yet again, that she's a poor choice for bridge guardian. If you're trying to keep a population stuck underground, you don't want anyone around that might make them feel envious towards those up in the sunshine. On the other hand, Parsee might make a great tourism agent.

An unrelated thought occurs that casts doubt on the Parsee-Yuugi ship. Akyuu proscribes alcohol as a way to deal with built-up jealousy, get drunk, let it all out. Yuugi is commonly associated with beer and festivities, and would likely encourage Parsee to enjoy the same. So what would happen if a being that was literally the embodiment of jealousy got drunk enough to purge all those bad thoughts? What would be left?

Guess you could read it as Yuugi trying to "kill" Parsee... or maybe Yuugi trying to cure her, make her whatever she was before coming the Green-Eyed Monster. Yeah, that sounds a little better.

[up] It might depend on the intent behind the drinking, if you're feeling bad and don't want to you can drink to let it go. If you're like Parsee, however, drinking might just exacerbate your negative feelings and leave you bitterly sobbing over your sake, bemoaning your cruel fate in an even louder voice than usual.

It kinda makes sense In my mind because Yuugi has just so much for Parsee to be jealous over. She's tall, strong, respected, from a well-known and recognised species and she can really hold her liquor (in more ways than one).

Drinking with her might actually leave Parsee more jealous than before.

Well, at least they'd each be doing their thing - Yuugi maintaining her blood alcohol levels, and Parsee feeling miserable about herself.

Since it's been about two weeks now, any other thoughts on Parsee before we move on to Kana?

Here's mine - I like that time Shino tried to make Parsee feel better about herself.

Parsee is like the rest of the underground youkai/oddities, she is decent person with a dangerous and terrifying power. Parsee can be jealous of your jealously.

Alrighty, let's give a fond farewell to Parsee so she can get back to being envious towards the characters being discussed. Coming up will be Aya Shameimaru, Elis, and a reclusive, anemic bibliophile. But first, it's

Maiden Poltergeist Who's Lost Her Dreams
Kana Anaberal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/KanaAnaberal_8888.jpg
Appearance:

Theme: "Vanishing Dream ~ Lost Dream"note

Write-up:
A poltergeist encountered during that weird fighting tournament over some "ruins" that appeared one day near the Hakurei Shrine. Kana was produced by a mentally-unstable girl, as usual for poltergeists, and came to haunt a Western-style mansion, of which Gensokyo seems to have a surprising amount. Unfortunately she'd been there so long that everyone got used to her presence, so she considered finding a new start at some other place. Since she hasn't been seen in a long while, maybe Kana got her wish.

Kana is probably foreign, since she confuses Gensokyo's regular characters and similarly seems weirded-out by an "old-fashioned" shrine maiden and "an Oriental sorcerer," but recognizes Ellen as a "real witch." This again raises the question of how she came to Gensokyo herself, as Ms. Anaberal lacks even the Prismriver sisters' sparse backstory to explain herself. Or in other words, she's another of those one-shot PC-98 characters who offer more riddles than answers.

Right, it's getting quiet, let's make some noise.

Kana's got some interesting potential due to her nature. She's a poltergeist, a creature that exists to raise hell, and is frequently associated with teenagers with untapped powers. This suggests a personality like an out-of-control teen, all destructive outbursts and premature cynicism, reinforced by the amount of time she's spent doing her thing in her home.

But at the same time, PoDD is Kana's first time out of that home, as far as we know. Her win quotes are all her reacting with amazement to the weird footless lady and oriental witch and whatnot she encountered that day. So combined, you could give her a mixture of innocence and jadedness, someone cranky and world-weary but constantly astonished by what she encounters on her adventures. Kinda like Sanae shortly coming to Gensokyo, assuming she had a rough childhood.

That kind of characterization might get annoying, though, but hey, she's a poltergeist, she's here to be a nuisance.

I like to imagine that she tries to be all cynical and jaded because that's how poltergeists are supposed to be, and yet, she just can't keep her amazement under her hat during her first voyage.

The idea for her outfit probably came from some old book she found in that house she was haunting and thought looked cute.

I wonder what Kana thinks of Yumemi? Why would she want to haunt Reimu considering that she is trained to take out beings like her?

Kana Anaberal:

A poltergeist created by an unstable girl. Used to be scary, but no more. Now a wanderer. Highly curious.

The Roaming Spectre Phenomenon:

When Kana was created, she was at the peak of Fear for all who dared to visit her mentally unstable creator, performing supernatural feats only poltergeists are capable of. Perhaps her appearance was different back then, too. She was so used to this life, she thought this would be her role for eternity.

But she never expected her creator to get better. Since her mind was restored, any fearful acts Kana pulled off became more of an annoyance than true fear. Kana thought her appearance was to blame. So she decided to get a style makeover. Perhaps if she looked more regal and kindly, people will be more spooked out when she randomly does her supernatural tricks. A perfect plan...

...Except it didn't work! If anything, she was considered more of a nuisance than before! Kana came to the conclusion that her services were no longer required. No longer bound by her predetermined role, she decided to move out, expand her world, and find another person to haunt. However, she couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness at leaving her creator behind. But then, she wondered why she hasn't vanished when her creator's mind was restored. It's because the more ignored she was, the more she was able to gain her own being. That, and well, despite all the trouble her creator thought she caused, she never wanted to dispel something she formed. Whether it was a deliberate or subconscious act on her part, Kana will never know.note

And thus, Kana arrived at a new stop in her life. Hearing the rumors of ruins, she set out on her new adventure...

Tacitus Since: Jan, 2001
#3263: Mar 27th 2016 at 8:21:23 PM

Gensokyo is good to poltergeists - normally they're stuck haunting a specific person, but in this demiplane they're free to spring from someone's head like Athena and go on to have an independent existence, even outliving their creator.

So odds are good that Kana is still out there somewhere, the question is what she's been up to in the interim between her debut and now. If she did win the tournament for the ruins, her time at the Hakurei Shrine was evidently short-lived. Did she go back home, reinvigorated by her little excursion? Is she freelance now, causing bumps and crashes in other homes?

Not like she could do much else, since unlike the Prismrivers she doesn't have a superpower beyond being a poltergeist.

I like to imagine that she tries to be all cynical and jaded because that's how poltergeists are supposed to be, and yet, she just can't keep her amazement under her hat during her first voyage.

And this makes playing her off Ellen mighty difficult. The eternally-childish mage has the naivety and innocence quota covered, so having Kana echo those sentiments is redundant, yet Kana just doesn't come across as very acerbic, more surprised.

Maybe she'd work better with Rikako? They both like foreign clothing...

I wonder what Kana thinks of Yumemi?

"I say, I say. A fake magician?"

Why would she want to haunt Reimu considering that she is trained to take out beings like her?

Probably inexperience. Kana considers miko "old-fashioned" and could either think that a modern poltergeist like her would be out of their league, or has no idea what she's about to get into.

Maybe Kana became a talented poltergeist.

Spell of Sudden Loss~ Lost Dream
Fading Dreams
Lost Dreams
Buried Dreams
Revolutionary Dream
Dreaming of Ruin
Blast The Amnesia Away
Mesmerizing Dream
Everlasting Dream

Yeah, maybe she ran into the Prismrivers and became the lead vocalist. For a week. the sisters realized they couldn't form a perfect symphony with her. Like, her tone clashed greatly with their harmony.

Personally, my headcanon is that anyone suggesting to the Prismrivers that they join the group to make a quartet - or in other words, replace Layla - is going to feel the wrath of the Phantom Ensemble, unfettered and raw. But yeah, if that's not the case I can imagine Kana's personality causing problems. Maybe she thinks one of Lyrica's solos is just a little too quiet and decides to liven it up with some drums and cymbals.

If Kana is a modern poltergeist, what would Kana think of ancient ghosts such as Yuyuko?

Interesting question, how youkai view each other. She might be disdainful that Yuyuko lacks the sort of purpose that a hell-raising poltergeist possesses, and just loafs around stuffing her face instead of getting a real job rattlin' furniture. On the other hand, Kana might be jealous or intimidated that Yuyuko is more "real" than her, a human revenant rather than a byproduct of another woman's mental issues.

Meanwhile Yuyuko's playing it cool but is quietly rattled because Kana looks like a ghost, and acts like some ghosts, but isn't a ghost. Yeah, she knows the Prismrivers, but they were created by an artifact, while Kana is a more "natural" 'geist she's never seen before. And then when she gets used to it and starts getting annoyed by Kana's outbursts, she calls in Youmu to greet their guest, and that's the afternoon's entertainment taken care of.

Maybe Kana became a talented poltergeist.

Ah, hard to choose between Alstroemeria Records and Magnum Opus. Let's call it a tie.

Stage: The Mountain Fortress ~ The Waterfall of Nine Heavens
BGM: "Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall"note
Theme: "The Youkai Mountain ~ Mysterious Mountain"note

Spellcard Motif: Wind, photography!
Sample spellcards: PoFV, MoF, GoM, SWR, DS, 'soku, ISC
Wind Sign "Wind God's Fan," Gust "Wind God Girl," Crossroad Sign "Saruta Cross," "Peerless Wind God," Blockade Sign "Terukuni Throughout the World," Tornado "Guidepost for the Advent of the Divine Grandson," Wind Sign "Opening Wind of the Tengu Realm," Demon Beast "Sickle Weasel Veiling," Whirl Sign "Fluttering Strange Fan," Wind Sign "Tengu Newspaper Deadline Day," Reporting "Aya Shameimaru's Coercive Reporting," Snapshot "Fast Shot," Photography "Quick-Shooting Tengu Scoop," "Instant Shot Journalist"

Write-up:
A quite powerful crow tengu who possesses both incredible speed and control of the wind itself. She's not inclined to be a fighter, however, and like others in the tengu "nimble information corps," Aya occupies herself with managing a newspaper. Unfortunately, her tendency to shamelessly exaggerate or fabricate stories makes her Bunbunmaru a bit of a gossip rag or tabloid.

Despite being primarily a (terrible) journalist, Aya has gotten involved in several Incidents, usually as a side effect of trying to report on them, while at other times her newspaper has served to escalate a conflict. She's also amassed a collection of photographs of Gensokyo's prominent citizens' danmaku for some mysterious purpose. And of course her articles and interviews are valuable resources when it comes to learning about Gensokyo's history and denizens, though you should take them with a liberal helping of salt.
