One saw the other as a terrifyingly powerful youkai while the other saw her as some jerk that broke into her mansion?

Should've checked the list.

Yeah, I have the feeling Yuuka made a pretty good impression on our young heroines. It's not every day you fight someone for two stages. And then she follows you into a demon world to pick fights with the locals.

I don't think we can even be sure Yuuka in the PC-98 games was a youkai.

Well, she's listed as such in Mystic Squares manual, but... um, Yuuka herself is a bit inconsistent about what she is.

Yuuka: What's with you? Treating people like youkai...
Reimu: Well, you aren't human...
Yuuka: And?

Then one game later, it's

Shinki: Now you're the one being impudent! You're just a human!!
Yuuka: Don't group me together with those humans!

Maybe she wants to be treated with the same respect Reimu would show another human (snerk), but doesn't want to be dismissed as a weak Muggle by an enemy?

Or she's just being contrary.

Alice in PC-98 and Windows were different enough. But's that getting into "Is PC-98 canon" territory, and I completely respect those who think it is.

Oh, it is on... later, during the Alice discussion.

Yuuka did that contrarian with in Mystic Square, maybe she didn't want Shinki to think she was some sort weakling.

Yuuka: And?
Does it make more sense if phrased as "Just because I'm a monster, that doesn't mean I'm a monster"?

Given that Yuuka doesn't have many obviously inhuman traits, and Shinki doesn't appear to know much about the world outside Makai, it's fully possible for Shinki to mistake Yuuka for a human.

I'm starting to wonder whether or not humans actually have natural hair colors in Touhou and the human that don't are explicitly abnormal. If so, that explains what's strange about Yuuka; green hair.

Tacitus This. Cannot. Continue. from The Great American Dumpster Fire Since: Jan, 2001
This. Cannot. Continue.

Just look at the human cast list - the character with the conventional dark hair is Kaguya (who is debatably human), then there's Reimu, Kosuzu, Rika and Renko with hair ranging from brown to red, and the rest are all blondes or blues or greens or grays or weirder. Or, y'know, look in the background of HM. Evidence suggests that unnatural hair colors are only natural in Gensokyo. Or that it's the weirdos who show up to fight or watch fights.

I'd say it's an open question whether these unnatural hair colors are due to interbreeding with local youkai, background magic, or a mixture of both.

Maybe she didn't want Shinki to think she was some sort weakling.

Likely.

Given that Yuuka doesn't have many obviously inhuman traits, and Shinki doesn't appear to know much about the world outside Makai, it's fully possible for Shinki to mistake Yuuka for a human.

Also plausible. We know humans visit the demon world to level grind, so it's possible that Shinki assumed every Gensokyan who visited her realm was a human mage or something. Though as of UFO Sanae B's scenario, it sounds like youkai go there for the same reasons, so maybe Shinki's logic wouldn't hold in the current continuity.

Does it make more sense if phrased as "Just because I'm a monster, that doesn't mean I'm a monster"?

This brings up what I feel is the biggest difference between PC-98 Yuuka and modern Yuuka Kazami. Yuuka demands respect but hardly acts deserving of it - she's excitable, aggressive, confrontational, a bit of a punk. Hot-blooded. She almost sounds young, girly.

Contrast that with Yuuka Kazami's dialogue in PoFV - she's much more refined, relaxed, conversational, though she still teases an opponent or two and more or less tells Marisa "if you're not attacking, I am." Also, and I just now noticed this, most of her win quotes are thinking of a flower that best represents her opponent. That's a classy killing machine.

I guess Alice isn't the only one who matured sometime between the continuity shift.

Maybe Yuuka calmed down from her PC 98 days or at least became much more efficient in her killing.

I'd say it's an open question whether these unnatural hair colors are due to interbreeding with local youkai, background magic, or a mixture of both.
There's plenty of Japanese media where the hair colour you see on-screen or in illustrations doesn't match their "real" hair colour if it's ever described in-story. E.g. in most cases "blue" hair is black, "bright red" hair is brown, etc.

Yuuka Kazami:

An ancient youkai who can manipulate flowers in such a mesmerizing way. Very elegant. And a tad sadistic.

Yuuka can control flowers. I bet she can also cause flowers to bloom in areas that yearn for fertile soil.

After returning from Makai, I do believe that Yuuka converted the now-dry Lake of Blood into the sunflower garden we see today. It's a graceful scare tactic to say the sunflowers' main nutrient is the blood of any being that would drop by for a visit.tongue

...Aha. Should Yuuka's wrath be incurred, she would say something like "You know, all of a sudden, my pretties are quite hungry. And they're saying your flesh and blood fits their delicate standards. Now, hurry along and feed them."

Her giant laser blasts are actually the gathered energy of her flowers. In other words, Solarbeam.

So how to reconcile stately, refined Yuuka Kazami with that Yuuka brat?

If we assume that they're the same entity, maybe something about being woken up by Reimu and/or Marisa got her all fired up. Not many people are at their best in the morning, especially if they were unexpectedly awakened. And then Yuuka stayed in this state long enough to tour Makai.

Second theory is that there's something about the environment she was encountered in. First she was fought in some sort of dream mansion, then in a demon world. So it's kinda like the yellow son reacting with a Kryptonian biology, just Yuuka and her psychosis. Once she gets to Gensokyo and soaks up some rays among the sunflowers, she mellows out.

Third theory is that Yuuka is a sterling example of the youkai who causes a ruckus, gets beat up by Reimu, and mellows out. Her Reimu-ing just only took after she went to Makai. Or maybe another Reimu-ing happened between then and now that we didn't hear about.

...So what was she doing in that dream mansion in the first place?

Maybe Yuuka calmed down from her PC 98 days or at least became much more efficient in her killing.

Ah, "efficient," thanks for reminding me! See, one of the things about modern Yuuka is that compared to the other characters in PoFV, she's abysmally slow. There's been explanations offered for this, but I like the notion that Yuuka is such an experienced combatant, she doesn't need to hurry. She knows exactly where she needs to go during a fight, and can thus use the minimum amount of effort to maximum effect.

This doesn't quite hold true for Mystic Square, however, it looks like she and Reimu shared the same crap speed rating there.

There's plenty of Japanese media where the hair colour you see on-screen or in illustrations doesn't match their "real" hair colour if it's ever described in-story.

Aww, but I don't wanna go down the rabbit hole to try to find what's "real" in these games.

After returning from Makai, I do believe that Yuuka converted the now-dry Lake of Blood into the sunflower garden we see today.

This is a neat idea.

It's a graceful scare tactic to say the sunflowers' main nutrient is the blood of any being that would drop by for a visit.tongue

Though I'm not sure about the beneficial properties of blood as a fertilizer. I know bone meal is good, at least.

So, Yuuka - very popular character, old character, and thus a character with a lot of great fanart. A ton of it is repetitive pictures of her posing with her umbrella in a flower field, but that just means that some of those pictures are just amazing.

The way I see it, Windows Yuuka is basically a retired old youkai. One of most feared youkai in her youth, she already stops being such a delinquent girl. She doesn't actively terrorize people anymore, and just wants to live peacefully with her flowers. Over her ancient age, she gained much of both power and wisdom. Of course, this doesn't mean she will stop trolling people when she can, especially when bratty kids get on her lawn.

PC-98 Yuuka is her in her youth. The personality gap in the short time...let's just attribute that to weird youkai physiology, or maybe Makai/Dream World Mansion has a different flow of time than Gensokyo. Considering she even appeared in Seihou, which IIRC is in the far future, she may even have time travel powers.

One idea I had was that the dream mansion was a sort of trap set a long time ago for the fearsome, youthful Yuuka. Reimu and Marisa inadvertently released her and got to see her old personality right after she woke up, but shortly after returning to Gensokyo, Yuuka started acting her age and settled down.

Another thought would be that since Yuuka was encountered in a dream world, it wasn't really Yuuka Kazami at all, just her repressed, younger wild side that finds fulfillment through dreams of battle. Somehow this dream Yuuka got loose and managed to rampage through Makai, unless you simply declare her scenario in MS noncanon.

A third thought is... well, Yuuka can already duplicate herself. Maybe she can do a one-woman Red Oni, Blue Oni routine. Red Yuuka, being Red Yuuka, got in some fights and invaded a demon world, while Blue Yuuka rolled her eyes and tended to her sunflowers.

I suppose the latter scenarios open the possibility of Dream/Red Yuuka still running around out there somewhere, pursing a violent and independent existence...

As for her Seihou appearance, it's entirely possible she reached the distant future the slow way. Or maybe she went through whatever connection allowed VIVIT to fight Reimu and Marisa that one time.

...Hmm, there might be something about Makai though - a certain pair of witches from that dimension had a run-in with synthetic humanoids from the 28th century.

You know I always wondered why does everyone portray Yuuka as a sadist?

Well...

"In a few hours, you'll become a mist of atoms. ♥ [...] I thought it'd be neat if that actually happened. ♥"

"You've certainly got guts. ♥ I'll kill you instantly."

"Genocide is just another game. It doesn't matter whether it's humans or Makai residents."

"I was just teasing them. It's a daily thing."

She's violent and she seems to be enjoying herself while she's violent. You can interpret a lot of other characters' dialogue the same way, of course - just about everyone's using those hearts in LLS - but something about Yuuka seems to suggest she takes things to a different level.

From the way I interpret her character, she doesn't really mean those quotes. Like the last quote says, she's just teasing them. She's more of a The Gadfly, as she enjoys getting reactions out of people she happen to meet.

The difference is, while PC-98 Yuuka seem to do it the blunt way, using straight threats and destructive force, Windows Yuuka seem to do it more subtly. Like in Cirno's route, she used her power to make all the sunflowers in the fields to turn toward Cirno, while saying "these sunflowers want you to be one of them" just to scare her. Other examples include accepting people's accusations of being the culprit of the flower incident, interrupts Mystia's song with "fried bird" lyrics, and tells Reisen about having rabbit stew for dinner after beating her up. And she doesn't have to worry about repercussions, because she's strong enough to handle them.

Basically, Yuuka is a character that does whatever she wants to amuse herself, and many of the things she does is Just For Lulz. She probably isn't even that hostile to humans, she just asked Akyuu to put her in "Worst" friendliness category so people would be afraid of her.

Oh yeah, anyone who hasn't seen "Re:Lotus Land Story" yet is doing themselves a disservice.

From the way I interpret her character, she doesn't really mean those quotes. Like the last quote says, she's just teasing them.

I should probably have mentioned, but the last quote is from her conversation with the yama while the others are her PC-98 characterization. So going along with others' accusations of being the culprit, freaking out Cirno and Mystia, and all that PoFV stuff, that might be "teasing," but the rest... Maybe it's just the way I'm reading it, but I can't see any indication in Mystic Square that she wasn't amusing herself by blasting every Makaijin she came across. Treating genocide as a game, in other words.

Yuuka is just a troll of the hgihest caliber huh?

Mmm, troll? Not sure about that, it's not just about provoking a negative reaction. I think it's better to say that since her rambunctious youth, Yuuka's come to appreciate that instead of just charging in right away, it's better to instill as much fear as you can beforehand. As if basting a turkey.

What is Yuuka thinking about, as she stares at the vastness of her world?

"I remember when it was all green."

Good tunes, as usual. Favorites would probably be the O-Life Japan arrange of "Faint Dream" and Sound Holic's "Lotus Love," two themes I usually don't pay attention to. Unexpected surprise would be that bouncy Celtic remix of "Lotus Love." Overall, kudos for not focusing on Yuuka's "popular" themes.

Theme: "The Sealed-Away Youkai ~ Lost Place"note

Spellcard Motif: Arachnids and pathogens
Notable spellcards: SA, GoM, DS
Trap Sign "Capture Web," Spider "Cave Spider's Nest," Miasma Sign "Filled Miasma," Miasma "Unexplained Fever," Small Thread "Kandata's Rope," Poison Sign "Japanese Foliage Spider"

Write-up:
An earth spider with the power to manipulate diseases, Yamame is one of the hated and feared youkai who relocated to the Underground. Yet she doesn't like to use this ability on people, and is so friendly and outgoing that she's quite popular among her peers.

Granted, she may not have a choice about using her ability, and can make people sick simply by being near them. And she did apply to the Myouren Temple in hopes of bagging some delicious humans from the surface. But other than that she's not bad as youkai go, and might be someone to turn to if you need a building thrown up overnight. Just be sure to wash your hands afterwards and consult Dr. Yagokoro if you come down with a fever.

It wouldn't quite be a Typhoid Mary situation, I think. She'd just be a doctor you could go to and get one disease treated, but you'd always come home with a flu.

Though maybe Yamame would refuse to treat you. Even if she doesn't plan on eating you in particular, curing you of something would be like scraping all the sauce and seasoning off a delicious meal. It's just wasteful, don't you think?
