A Markup to Create Editor-Visible-Only Text

It would be nice if there could be a markup that functioned somewhat similar to the comment markup, but instead of rendering the text visible only in the source, it rendered the text visible only to those readers who are logged in.

Eddie has repeated stated that notes to editors should be visible only to editors and not to casual readers; currently, that means that all such notes are coded with comment markup and thus only visible on either the source or the edit page. Unfortunately, this means that certain types of notes—for instance, No Real Life Examples Please, instructions not to sinkhole Understatement, or a note on the main Complete Monster page that all examples need to go through the cleanup thread—are only visible if someone actually tries to edit the page (which, for Complete Monster, means not visible at all, as the page is locked) even though the information is needed for people making edits regarding the trope elsewhere on the wiki. Most people don't bother to check the source code if they're not making edits to the page itself, which means if there are instructions about using the page elsewhere on the wiki, the instructions are often missed and therefore do little good.

Therefore, having a code which is only seen by those who are logged in (a.k.a. editors) would allow us to make such notes more visible to those whom it matters to while still leaving the notes out of view of the general public.

I suggested a banner that is visible only to editors in a few TRS threads. Making it a text markup seems like a good idea.

Additionally the ability to switch these notes on or off could work as well, but may lessen its impact.

This seems reasonable; sourcecode comments are pretty easy to miss

I would agree with this. This has worried me ever since the [[noreallife]] tag was introduced - these tags won't be noticed by people editing other pages, such as someone adding Complete Monster to the page about Josif Stalin.

This is a very good idea. I also recall some times when the staff didn't make something a wiki headline because it wasn't relevant to lurkers, so similar code could help there too.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Superseded by more recent request, locking.
