Just finished binging the whole thing. Non spoiler thoughts/opinions, it's great. The action is great, all characters get their time to shine. The story is enjoyable enough, but it's more about the interactions between the characters that makes the show. Danny Rand gets some much needed development, which definitively proves how underserved he was by the writers of his own show and Scott Buck. Neither Ward nor Joy make an appearance at all, with just an offhand reference that Ward is conveniently out of town on business during all this. Not exactly sure what Joy and Davos are up to. It seems that this takes place in real time, as Danny says he and Colleen have been tracking The Hand for months. All and all, I hope they do this again within the next 5 years, because they sure do know what they're doing, and they do it quite well.

For those of you who've finished it already - would you say that Iron Fist is required viewing?

[up][up] I haven't watched Iron Fist, and Defenders is going perfectly fine. The only thing that I wish I knew more of was the relationship between Bakuto and Coleen, I guess watching only a handful of episodes can be enough.

Although I guess watching IF helps suffering that idiot Danny Rand. I mean, six episodes in, and he is still a monumental moron.

I only watched one episode of Luke Cage and none of Iron Fist but I had no problems following along with what is going on in Defenders. Though I only made it through 5 episodes already.

You need to at least watch Daredevil Season 2, as that is were the bulk of The Defenders' plot is built up on. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage can be skipped without issue.

There is a Defenders thread, we might as well use it, so this one can be used to talk about how the series connect to each other, or Punisher, or what's next.

It's mostly the relationships between different characters so actually watching it (except for Daredevil) probably isn't necessary - just read up on stuff if you want to know.

I'm almost done with the show and as someone who only watched Jessica Jones and Iron Fist to completion it's easy to understand what's going on without having seen the other shows.

I would say that Iron Fist is kind of important if you want to understand what Coleen is all about.

So, that Punisher teaser. That thing with the sledgehammer evoked that one scene from John Wick for me. If they can channel that into the action scenes as well, I am a-okay with that. [tup]

Inhumans has been removed from Netflix before I got a chance to see it. I can only hope it is never referenced in any future Marvel product.

[up] (2) Given how well Agents of SHIELD fared in that department, I don't think you'll have to worry about Inhumans being referenced. Heck, the Netflix shows are still afraid to use words like "alien" or "Asgardian."

Those words don't work well within the tone. I think 'aliens' have only been used a couple times throughout Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.

I honestly don't care, but I wish they would stop saying phrases like "the green guy" or "the flag waver". Just say the names, everything else is just ridiculous.

I know IM Db isn't trustworthy as a user-edited source for not-yet-released shows, but when you browse around the cast listings, some interesting things come up.

Luke Cage (2016) season 2

For instance, browsing the cast listings for Luke Cage season 2, I've noticed that A) it looks like Misty's forensics friend Mark Bailey is going to be promoted to Detective and likely will be filling Scarfe's role as Misty's partner who is by her side as she gets adjusted to her new bionic arm. B) That Ben Donovan will probably have a slightly larger role than he had in season 1 as he's down for four episodes, and C) We might get an appearance from Mr. Fish, another member of Luke Cage's rogues gallery.

Jessica Jones (2015) season 2

With the second season of Jessica Jones, listings are complicated. But the listings put down so far seem to confirm my suspicions that the IGH mystery will be the backbone of season 2, and we will get some more flashbacks to Jessica's childhood as Elizabeth Cappuccino (young Jessica) has a listing in 2x07, which is also an episode where there's a listing for Aiden Linkov as Philip Jones.

We also know from set photos there will also be at least one episode with flashbacks to the It's Patsy days, given pictures of Rachael Taylor sporting hair extensions. (Not to mention a large number of pictures of Rachael Taylor on set make me think Trish will have a much larger role in season 2)

I think episode 4 may be where those production stills of Trish and Jessica getting arrested are from, given listings for actors playing tabloid reporters.

Daredevil (2015) season 3

There's less to go on for Daredevil season 3 given that the show is still early in filming, and is only up to about the fourth episode. So this means cast information outside of Matt, Karen and Foggy is very limited.

However, the IM Db listings so far have given me a little room to speculate on where the storylines for Karen and Fisk might be going. Episode 2 has a listing for one Bill Winkler as 'Warden Riggle', which to me suggests that that's the episode where Fisk will be getting out of prison. Episode 3 has a listing for Antoni Corone (Jack Ruby in 11/22/63) as 'Police Commissioner Dimolina'. Incidentally, someone's also put down Mitchell Ellison as appearing in those two episodes.

Where does Karen tie into all this? Well, my theory about this is that the trio will be trying to determine how Fisk got out, with Matt and Foggy combining lawyer work and Daredevil (depending on how early Matt re-establishes communication with Karen and Foggy), and Karen supplementing Matt's Daredevil work with some Bulletin digging, with her being backed up by Ellison (since we know from season 2 that Ellison has vowed to not make with Karen the mistakes he made with Ben Urich). (I do note that I believe that season 3 will very likely give more focus on Matt and Karen's relationship than Matt and Foggy's friendship within the Avocados trio, given that most of the time, media has a tendency to give more screentime to romantic relationships than platonic familial ones)

There's also now a listing for Ron Fehmiu as an Albanian mob boss in episode 2, making me wonder if Fisk will have some sort of alliance with the Albanian mafia or somehow his taking out the Ranskahovs in season 1 is going to come back to bite him.

What are the most powerful moments in each (DD, JJ, LC, IF, TP) of the five shows at the moment? If you had to pick one from the entire show and not season by season?

Let's go with my favourite moments....

Daredevil: The sequence when they take down Fisk, especially the moment when Marcy watches her boss being lead away.

Jessica Jones: The final confrontation with Killgrave.

Luce Cage: My favourite moment is actually in the very beginning, when the attack goes wrong...the way the whole thing is intercut with the music is just beautifully done and just edges out the method man sequence. (Yes, I have a thing for montages to music, sue me)

Iron Fist: The attack on Rand industry, especially the part when Danny comes through the window and then puts his fist into the ground.

Defenders: The Restaurant scene...honestly, it is the only sequence which mostly works for me.

The Punisher: His little Revenge tour in the beginning, especially the part where he shots his victim across the border (again, I REALLY have a thing for montages set to fitting music).

Daredevil: The hallway fight, easy.

Jessica Jones: I believe it was the second episode and Jessica knows Kilgrave's back, and as she's walking on the street she's scanning the crowd. The color of the background seemed to shift to purple - which might just be Jessica's color thinking back now - but at the same it heightened the sense of paranoia she had to be feeling.

Luke Cage: The scene of Luke pulling debris away, Misty investigating the scene, Claire stopping somebody who'd just mugged her - all played to Long Live the Chief inside of Cottonmouth's club.

Iron Fist: ...I guess the first scene where Danny harnesses his chi.

The Punisher: The first few scenes that switch between Frank playing his guitar in the past and present.

Defenders: mm... hard to say.

Ugh.

[1] The era of Marvel TV on Netflix seems to be coming to an end at the same time Disney is revving up its own streaming service with already announced Loki and Scarlett Witch series for Disney+ coming from Marvel’s Kevin Feige led film division. For now, the upcoming new seasons of Jessica Jones and The Punisher are still currently scheduled to run on Netflix as planned, sources say.

Why do I feel the overwhelming urge to blame Disney for getting the shows I like cancelled so they can push Tom-fricking-Hiddleston and Elizabeth-fricking-Olsen?

Yeah let's cancel the Netflix Avengers so we can push our MCU characters!

The fact is times have changed on the digital landscape and Marvel shows on Netflix are costly to make, even with New York’s generous tax credits, which had an extra clause added to accommodate the series. When the initial deal with Marvel/Disney was made by Netflix five years ago, the company, desperate to gain big draw content, laid out big bucks for the series – which it never owned. Now the situation is very different, with Netflix awash in new series and returning series that it holds the keys to.

In that context, Netflix and Marvel TV have also been arguing over the season orders and that may have played a role in Daredevil’s demise, as it did Luke Cage‘s. Being part of the first wave of Netflix original series, all Marvel series have produced 13-episode seasons. But Netflix has since switched to seasons of 10 episodes and has been pressuring Marvel TV to switch to fewer episodes, which the company had been resisting.

There also have been creative issues, with a revolving door of showrunners on Marvel’s Netflix shows. There have been new showrunners for every season of Daredevil, with Iron Fist and Jessica Jones’ also undergoing a showrunner change.

Also these things, perhaps. But I still blame Disney.
