Well you want to make Christianity look awesome? I have just the thing.
Though really I don't think it's impossible to make a good Christianity-themed movie that's not set in ancient times, fantasy/sci-fi or an adaptation of a biblical story. People just need to pick their goddamn battles.
God Is Not Dead chooses to portray the plight of...Traditional Protestants in the U.S. Arguably the place where Christianity is most influential and unimpeded in the entire world (except maybe the Vatican, and even the Vatican has to deal with a truly humungous amount of problems like internal corruption, foreign espionage and assassination attempts).
Instead why not portray the plight of Christianity on the heavy tensions of Northern-and-Southern-Ireland, or in France (which has in general a very anti-religious bias, like the laws against holy symbols being displayed in public), or the Middle East if you want to bring in the big guns.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."Another idea for an awesome Christian movie: Just talk about Dom Justo Takayama, the Christian Samurai Daymio (feudal Lord) who fought alongside Oda Nobunaga and caused a brief flourishing of Christianity in Japan, providing a safe haven for Christians in Japan (which was very persecuted up until the Meiji Restoration and even then...), before Nobunaga's successors (H Ideyoshi and then Tokugawa) decided to disregard Nobunaga's previous mild acceptance of Christianity and gave him the ultimatum between abandoning his faith or being stripped of his land and titles and becoming a Ronin. Which he then promptly did and wandered Japan as a masterless swordsman until he was finally banished from the country alongside all open practicing Christians and died shortly thereafter in the Phillipines, where he was received as a hero.
And is now on the fast track to sainthood in the Cahtolic Church.
Christian Samurai. Can't go wrong there, man.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."
As I said previously, Scorsese is one of the best directors when it comes to working with religious themes. This might become another fine example.
It's only a pity they're not casting any Portuguese (or Portuguese-speaking) actors. Not even Diogo Morgado (who played Jesus in Son of God and that Bible mini-series, a couple of years ago).

Wasn't Jack Chick an anti-Catholic? If so, I'm sure there would be nothing wrong in pissing off a denomination with millions and millions of people around the world.

Near as I can tell, Chick is anti-everything except staunch born-again evangelicism.
I maintain Alucard can never match the might of Father Anderson and this was Hellsing's greatest mistake.
Hell, there's another thought. You want a good Christian movie? Make a spin-off centered entirely on Father Anderson. The hero this world deserves
.
The reason this movie fails was already said by Quag: is not a cristian movie, is American cristian movie, the whole premise is based in the cultural wars that is outgoing now, which it dosent afect anyone else EXCEPT them.
Biblicals movie are good because they are story of chararter, not just a preach tool about how god is great and you dont, just look some of those film: prince of egypt is the story of two brother and show the angel of death in his elderich glory(Because....jeez, that is creepy as hell), Noah have him become a bordeline villian in the third act and exodus have god being look in a less moral light.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"@Gaon: That's actually a good idea. Discussing the harsh persecution of Christians in regimes such as China, the Middle East, or North Korea (in fact...does North Korea even have an underground church?).
Or the Soviet Union. In fact, a movie about Richard Wurmbrand could be pretty cool as an Oscary-type movie.
Leviticus 19:34

Kingdom Of Heaven did a pretty good job as a Christian war movie with a clash of ideals and a good number of theological debates.
