A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Which does explain a few of the irregularities, like the song - it was his first movie as an independant, and a lot of the animators and producers and stuff had been pulled from Disney too, so they were still thinking in Disney Mode(Albeit with more of a trend towards pretty moody stuff).
I remember the movie a lot better than the book, so I can't really comment on the differences, but the amulet never felt that bad to me. I mean, it's given to her by a magic rat, so it's not that hard to accept that it's magic too. Or Psychic Rat, Psychic Amulet, either way.
At one point Don Bluth and another higher-up on the movie made a statement about the change in direction in the last half of the movie, though I don't remember exactly what it was. I believe it was something to the effect of either, "There were certain changes we had to make, so the rest were changed to flow more naturally around it" Or "We wanted the movie to stand on its own as a story, rather than as an adaption, so we made a few changes to differentiate". Which would be another Disneyism, given their approach to their fairy tails and other source materials.
As a side note, my spellchecker recognizes Disneyism as a word. Neat.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Nicodemus isn't started to be magic either, though he his depicted with sorcerer vibes in the movie (plus there's his voice over via electropunk scrying machine throughout the first half of the movie, which also comes off as lazy storytelling). But the real problem is that the amulet is bad storytelling. The only reason we have to beleive that it's powerful is that Nicodemus was guarding it and was worried about Jenner finding it, and it is never stated what it is or what it can do.
Anyway, there was no magic at all in the book. Mrs Frisby's house gets moved with pulleys and levers, and it goes without incident. Jenner is barely mentioned and dies offscreen (specifically, he is electrocuted trying to steal machinery in town, which is what causes NIMH to investigate in the first place). The climax of the book is the rats moving out while fooling NIMH into thinking they were just ordinary rats. Which doesn't even get mentioned in the movie since they changed the climax to Jenner's swordfightery and the amulet thing.
Nicodemus's narration of the rats history is also much more detailed in the book and takes up a large portion of the book by itself. Ironic that it gets skipped over when the movie's title is actually The Secret Of NIMH.
Also, the tractor sabotage scene at the beginning was completely made up for the movie, but that's more understandable (easier than explaining why they have to move in dialog and it adds dramatic action, which movies crave).

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI remember both reading the book and watching the movie, but both were so long ago that I don't remember much of it.
Reaction Image RepositoryI read the book as a kid, but I still remember it enough to notice the differences.
In more tangentially MLP related news, Rarity made a cameo in the latest chapter of Harry Potter And The Methods Of Rationality.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Playthis is the cutest, most adorable thing I have ever seen, pony or otherwise.
seriously, I really freakin love this image. everything about it is just absolutely perfect!

XP granted for befriending a giant magical spider!Ugh! Mo R. I can't believe that I promised to read that. now I have no choice and there's so much other stuff I'd rather be reading (which is why I haven't started yet).
Yes. In philosophy, "Rationalism" is the belief that logic and reason and reason alone are the chief source of knowledge. Recently, though, Rationalism has been abused so that it appears to refer to a variant of Positivism
variant with a strong emphasis on the scientific method, which, of course, is backed almost entirely by Empiricism (or the view that we need physical evidence to back up our beliefs). This is despite the fact that rationalists like Descartes and Leibniz traditionally derided any sort of empirical philosophy.

Oh yeah. "Rationalists" really annoy me with their missuse of the word "rational" and its derivatives.
However, I'd still say that it applies as Rational!Harry doesn't even believe in life after death despite meeting ghosts, from what I understand. His reaction to seeing Mc Gonnagol transform is to immediately claim that it's impossible. One thing he says is that he intends to "become God". This doesn't sound like an empiricist to me.
That's because ghosts aren't really alive. They're more like portraits.
Though there is one hilarious recursive fanfic (Harry Potter And The Philosiphical Zombie) which considers the case where they are.
That's because everything he knew was disproved in an instant. That's a normal human reaction. Anyway, he quickly gets over it, if anything, abnormally fast, since this Harry is a superhuman empiricist.
Why don't you actually read the book before making unfounded criticisms?

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI haven't bothered with it because I'm not that into Harry Potter, and I generally don't care for any form of media that prioritizes being a philosophical experiment over being a good story.
Reaction Image RepositoryWhy not both?
