A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Post of the Day #815
@Kyler: some of the design elements for the costumes were taken from pre-existing characters, but the designs themselves are original.
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. There are several. Obviously, text adventures are playable, but I remember seeing one game designed specifically for blind people. It's a submarine combat simulator and it's audio only. There are probably others I haven't heard of. I also remember an article about researchers trying to create a game using haptic feedback, but I don't know if that went anywhere.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayNo surround-sound-only games yet?
In sadder news, my old man's Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has broken down for the 3rd time this month, and it's still practically new. I've told him to just get something from LG or Motorola already :P
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Yeah, most games playable by blind folk would be purely audio-based.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWhy are you surprised? They're hard and expensive to make, and the potential market is very small.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayThere's a few, but nearly all strictly Doing It for the Art projects by one or two coders, so they're kinda barebones.
Thankfully the Pokemon audio port project's going along. Still same situation, but she seems determined to finish.
Refreshable braille displays are already a thing, you know. As for touchscreens, you'd usually use something like Talk Back which tells you what's under your finger. But you can also scroll through items by swiping left and right and select by double tapping anywhere on the screen.
I also read an article a couple years ago about research towards tactile displays, but I don't know what the status of that is. Probably still stuck in the lab.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayBraille has it's functions, but is largely becoming irrelevant with screen readers, particularly nvda as it's the only one that's freeware. Seriously some like Jaws and Window Eyes can go up to 1000 bucks.
But yeah what Story said, the market's small enough that unfortunately there's just not much incentive.
Technically, Chome Vox is free too, but since it only works inside Chrome, it's not so useful on the desktop.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI guess a stepping sound would be forward motion and a sweeping sound would be backwards motion, and sped up versions of that would be running motions. Light taps would be light attacks, punch sounds would be medium attacks and loud thwacking sounds would be heavy attacks. When ever the opponent gets damaged, they grunt and lose life. After 20 grunts, the opponents lose.
So they're just on a linear battlefield. Sounds kind of simple, but it might work. You'd probably want panning too though. And ideally different sounds to distinguish the characters.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySo I just watched The Secret Of NIMH. Talk about a strange movie.
There was less changed from the book than I expected, and some of the changes are understandable since it's a movie. For example, adding gratuitous action scenes and making everything 100 times more visually dramatic is par for the course in movies. And I guess they added the whole Jenner subplot so they could get a cartoonish movie villian while the book didn't really have any villians.
But some of the changes are just weird. Like the magic amulet bit. At the end, the conflict gets solved via Dues Ex Machina since a magic amulet comes out of nowhere and literally magics away all the problems. It's like the writers just ran out of time and got lazy or something. Plus it clashes badly with the rest of the movie since they never bothered to add any explanation of where the amulet comes from or what it does, and it's an adaptation of a story with no magic at all.
It's also interesting that a major part of the book is skipped over in a couple of sentences, while the climax of the book is literally not shown or mentioned at all. Maybe it got magiced away by the amulet offscreen too? Who knows? It would have made a good action scene though if the movie wanted more of those. But I guess there wasn't room narratively with the Jenner and Amulet subplot they added.
Also, the song at the beginning is really weird. It comes out of nowhere, doesn't have much to do with the action, and isn't even diegetic. It feels like they only threw it in because they thought that animated movies for kids should always have songs, but then it's the only song in the movie, so it sticks out like a sore thumb. And it's not even a good song.
Also, why on earth did they rename the main character? It took me half the movie to realize that they really were saying Brisby and I wasn't just mishearing.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySo apparently they changed the name because they worried about getting sued by the makers of frisbees (the flying disc). Which is really stupid since it's an adapation of a book where the name was in the freaking title.
I don't think trademark law is supposed to work that way, but I guess even the threat of a lawsuit is enough to make people worried, whether it has any merit or not. This is worse than the The Last Airbender thing.

Rarity would be a better fit in Serena's position :V
