A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Ok, we need a Maud v Luna Epic Rap Battle of Equestria.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Bliss. Uh dude, I've uh, seen where you hang out in certain Fimfic groups. Why here, dude?
But yeah, on shadier bits of the net I've heard of the thing. Just you watch, there'll be hilarious MS Tings up on the Tube in a week.
@Star: It's the internet. That's honestly probably one of the less weird pieces of porn that the show has.
Reaction Image Repository@Starscream: here, take this with you.
-tosses bottle of Brain Bleach- apologies if the bottle's half-empty. i had to dip into it a little myself.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. This show has been out for five years and we're only now seeing a live action, low budget, parody porno? Step up your game, internet!
Also, meh.

I will confirm that there is far weirder pony porn out there. Most of it is art as opposed to live-action film, though.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/As far as I'm concerned, nothing will ever be as bad as Dusk's Dawn.
Are you a future psychic?
Not really, but whatever.
Glad I'm not the only one who dislikes the s3 finale.
Wait, it's worse than Double Rainboom? That's impressive.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play
Dusks Dawn can be amusing in a The Room sort of way. But overall, yes, worse then DR.

What really irks me is that nearly every other aspect of the finale was handled really well. The confrontation with Azula was great, and seeing Toph, Sokka, and Suki take out the entire airship fleet themselves was epic. Then the gigantic climactic battle (which I'll admit was animated amazingly and looked awesome) happened, and it just felt like, for lack of a better explanation, that Aang didn't really earn his victory. He only beat Ozai because of the Avatar State, and he got the energybending technique basically handed to him rather than having to work for it in any fashion. It was kinda like something out of Bleach, where the hero suddenly manifests a new ability out of nowhere. Which is annoying because the entire rest of the series averted that. If they would've shown Aang training to use the technique, it wouldn't bug me nearly as much.

Oh, jeeze... sorry to hear that. I hope s/he feels better soon.
@Story: Double Rainboom was competent enough to make you realize that it could've been better. Dusks Dawn never had a shot at being anything decent.
Reaction Image RepositoryYeah, the Dues Ex Machina (no a picture of a turtle in a book that is never mentioend is not foreshaodwing) was ridiculous. But the other thing that was really bad was the What Measure Is a Mook? plus Broken Aesop. Aang gets told by everyone else, including the previous avatars, that he has to kill Ozai. And after killing probably thousands of people over the course of the series, and now faced with literally the most evil guy in the world, he suddenly gets cold feet and spends a while angsting before pulling a Dues Ex Machina all so he can avoid killing anyone onscreen in a kid's show.
Oh and the turtle is The Uintelligble, but its dialog was apparently supposed to be plot relevant.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI've been posting a few of them throughout today, but no one really seems to care for them
XP granted for befriending a giant magical spider!Off-topic, but I want to remind people why the Lion Turtle and Energybending do not count as a Deus Ex Machina: they do not fulfill the 3rd condition of a Deus Ex Machina, which is
The problem: defeating Ozai, which is not unsolvable or hopeless. Aang simply has to stop holding back and kill him. A real Deus Ex Machina from the finale, which still kinda bothers me to this day, would be:
To be honest, I didn't think the idea of spiritbending was that far removed from what they'd already shown us, though it certainly would have helped if they introduced it better and/or earlier. I mean, he's the Avatar, and in addition to just being able to bend all four elements, he's also shown doing spirit-related stuff on a regular basis. The fact that bending was already related to the spirit in some way (it's stated that firebenders use their chi to fuel their flames) is an extension of that.
And Aang refusing to kill Ozai, especially when another way to neutralize him presented itself, was perfectly in character for him. And the Bleach reference has always been made, but if they had shown Aang training to use this technique in order to defeat his next foe, it would have been Dragon Ball Z instead.

@Story: My issue was less that energybending existed (even aside from the Lion Turtle, Ty Lee's chi blocking and the Guru's knowledge of Chakras made it clear that cosmic bending energy can be manipulated), it was more that unlike every other technique he has, he didn't put any effort into this one. The issue isn't that he avoided killing Ozai, it's that despite his aversion to doing so, he never seeks out a viable alternative, and then one gets dropped in his lap. There's a difference between "I don't want to kill him, so I'm going to find a technique that allows me to neutralize him" and "I don't want to kill him oh hey I conveniently stumbled across a technique that I wasn't actually looking for". The former I would've been fine with. The latter is what the show actually did. The other problem is that his victory in the fight was less the result of his skill and more that he got lucky enough for Ozai to accidentally unblock his chakra.

Exactly. Energybending existing doesn't bug me, it's that Aang basically won the battle and learned the technique pretty much by happenstance as opposed to, you know, skill.
I never said it was out of character; it's well within his character to do it. I'm only annoyed by how the narrative got to that point. It would've been a much more satisfying resolution for Aang's moral dilemma to see him actively searching for / developing a method to allow him to Take a Third Option rather than just having it handed to him, because that's how the show handles everything else he does. It felt like he didn't earn the victory.
Also, that's not a problem in DBZ. DBZ's issues are that the power levels rise too quickly and that it takes forever for attacks to charge. Having the characters train for their power rather than just have it is a point in its favor.
