A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

If I might make a (self-promotional) suggestion regarding MG!Sunset...
I just posted that on the last page. :P

Gwen- personally I'd give Pinkie water (flowing, flexible) and let Rarity have metal.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Or Pinkie is something totally unrelated. Like the element of Bubblegum or something.
Reaction Image Repository@Chinese elements:
From what I know about the Wu Xing, each of the elements has certain connotations that might not match up to what the girls represent. I mean, a quick Google search tells me that fire, which otherwise would fit Dash perfectly, is associated with the virtue of "propriety" (conforming to conventionally held social values and such), which would fit Rarity better.
Of course, that might be reading too much into it, so here's what I would assign without trying to research too much:
Applejack - Earth. An argument could be made for Wood, but I see AJ as the most stable member of the crew, physically and emotionally.
Rainbow Dash - Fire. Since she's obviously the most hotheaded (and destructive) of them.
Rarity - Tough one, but I'm going to say Metal. Steel and iron are harder than rock, but they're more malleable, and Metal covers all metal, including the much softer (and prettier) gold and silver.
Fluttershy - Wood. Both because of the obvious joke, and because Wood often bends under pressure, but has the strength to hold when it needs to. Also, Wood is associated with the virtue of benevolence.
Pinkie Pie - Water. I'm not quite sure why, but none of the others seem to fit her, but I think Water does to some extent.
As for Purplesmart, you could always make up an element outside of the five, like "Aether" or something. Though that carries the risk of emphasizing her Mary Sue qualities relative to her friends.
Oh no, the only member of the mane six who is a princess and alicorn will have her uniqueness emphasized. The horror.
Question for my fan fic- should Nurse Redheart be Spray Paint, or Red Bean Injector?

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Hey, I've got no problem with it. I honestly think of Twilight as the glue that binds all five of them together.
I'm just saying be prepared for those accusations if that's what happens.
@Ike: Use both. But seriously, "Red Bean Injector" is a funnier name, but "Spray Paint" has all sorts of potential as having her moonlight as a graffiti artist or something.
Reaction Image RepositoryActually, while we're on the topic of older MLP stuff, could you maybe explain the appeal of the older MLP cartoons overall, Dark? I don't think they're horrible abominations {Newborn Cuties aside}, but I have been wondering what there really is to like about them. Just curious, I don't mean to be rude or anything. Though I do kind of see the appeal for the G1 MLP cartoon.

@Marston. G1 as I think you can gather is appealing for the dark villains, D and D flavor, and some notable ponies in the cast.
Tales has a slice of life tone similar to Friendship is Magic and I think it has a lot of charm from the 90s tech and fads and that the teenage cast were voiced by 14-15 year old kids that later were big VA's in the Ocean Group.
G3 is harder to explain. Yes it's heavy on the Narm Charm and fans will tell you as much, but the cuteness and moe aspects are played straight enough to feel like the ponies are genuinely innocent and sweet. Also the cast is quirky and has their own flavor of eccentric, so the interactions can be nice to watch. Also there's some self-aware humour usually from Pinkie Pie that's very funny when you won't expect it.
And watching all the cartoons brings to light that no matter the setting, there will be colorful ponies, friendship, catchy songs, and adventure.
@Star. My favorite MLPT ponies are Melody, Patch, Sweetheart, and Clover.

Okay, so I'm almost caught up with Avatar The Last Airbender (three episodes to go) and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to what show I should go through next. Note: It needs to be kid-friendly, because I watch them during my lunch break in the school office, so it needs to be something that won't get me in trouble with parents if kids get into my section. Currently, I'm thinking of going through Gravity Falls.

@Gwen: Aw, I kinda spent all my lunch thinking of different item/element combos for the girls, and I came up with some slightly different ones than you... well, if you're interested:
AJ: Element of Wood. Uses a set of enchanted Oak armour that will regrow any damage, in addition to being able to grow several useful tools - Blossom Shield, Grappling Vines, etc. When not in use, the armour takes the form of a Belt Buckle. Paladin/Knight archetype.
Rarity: Element of Metal. Uses a rapier(Or rapier/dagger combo) that can pierce and shatter any other weapon or armour, and manipulate other metal. Rogue Archetype. When not in use, the rapier becomes a set of earrings.
Alternatively, a monk/magus archetype that uses brass knuckles with the same effect, since lets face it Rarity has shown surprising willingness to fuck up someone's day. When not in use, the knuckles become two rings.
Dash: Element of Fire. Uses a pair of boots that give her extreme speed, and also allow her to choose what she hits - if she doesn't want to hit something her kicks will phase right through it. When not in use, the boots become anklets. Rogue/Ninja Archetype.
Pinkie Pie: Element of Earth. Uses a tambourine that causes earthquakes when she strikes it. Can be localized to knock up and throw chunks of earth and destabilizes enemies. When not in use, the tambourine becomes a bangle. Bard archetype.
Fluttershy: Element of Water. Uses a whip that can be made of water(typically used for binding enemies or redirecting attacks) or can shorten into a weapon of ice in the shape of her choosing(Reflects the slight dichotomy of her nature). When not in use, the whip becomes a necklace. Cleric-y archetype.
Twilight I hadn't been set on, though if you're using Sunset then it's a moot point. If you are going for chinese elements, then there'd have to be a new, sixth element anyhow. Could easily be air, and swap out Dash's element for Air?
Well either way, just my own thoughts on the subject, heh. It'd be admittedly hard to keep it feeling Shoujou-y, given the nature of it. From what I recall most magical girl stuff tends to be pure magic with a cutesy catalyst.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.
