A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

All of the usual forum rules apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

[up][up]It doesn't help that very few people actually use "whom" anyway.

Really, "who" versus "whom" is minor enough that I just about always use "who" even when it's not technically correct. The important thing is that there's no confusion, and I don't think that there are really any situations where confusing the two would lead to a mixed message.

What I do object to are things like "your" vs "you're", or "its" vs "it's", which are not only incredibly basic, but since they actually have different meanings there's more potential for confusion.

Peronally, I can be a bit strict about misuse of literality.

No, you did not literally laugh your ass off. That would be a medical emergency.

[up][up]Not to mention the whole there, they're, their thing.

[up]Yeah, that bugs me too. I mean, I know there's a degree of language shift in how words are used, but in that specific case it really annoys me because it's using the word in the exact opposite of its actual meaning. And doubly annoying, the entire point of the word "literally" is to point out when things aren't figurative. Meaning that the word itself is useless, and we lose the ability to use it in any meaningful fashion. Other slang/vernacular words (e.g. when something is "the bomb") don't usually rob the word of it's original meaning; you can still tell via context. But in this case, it doesn't work.

Post of the Day #804

That made me cry... of happiness I probably would yeah. I love her so much (less than the other ponies, but I still adore her). Why does the show have to use her in such an obnoxious way? WHY?!

I dunno, if it's in song form, she might pay attention better. And Pinkie would love it.

In my experience, no one says "whom" unless they're being a dick about it.

And what's an Oxford comma?

(Also- oxford wasn't auto-capitalized until I wrote comma after it, wtf)

Basically, when you have a list of three or more items, the comma before the "and" is technically optional, and called the "Oxford Comma" for some reason.

"Bob, George, and Alice" vs. "Bob, George and Alice".

I learned not to put a comma between the second-to-last and last item in a sentence, because it's separated by "and" instead.

Of course, that can lead to a whole host of ambiguities. Mainly because one can't tell if the final two items are meant to be separate or a single compound item.

Such as:

The Times once published an unintentionally humorous description of a Peter Ustinov documentary, noting that "highlights of his global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800-year-old demigod and a dildo collector." This would still be ambiguous if a serial comma were added, as Mandela could then be mistaken for a demigod, although he would be precluded from being a dildo collector.

Neslon Mandela was an awesome person, but I'm pretty sure he's not a dildo collecting 800-year-old demigod.

I'm of the opinion that many supposed ambiguities can be most easily solved by rearranging the sentence. Or paragraph, if necessary.

Yeah, I tend to not care whether it's there or not as long as the meaning is clear.

I learned the same way as Kyun, but after doing some research into it, both sides of the argument for either method had enough good points that I had trouble deciding what to go with.

@Teeth: I'm just glad he touched on the "could care less" thing. I've had it pointed out to me that this started out, back in the Eighties, as a sarcastic but still valid form of the same statement — but I counter that when it started out, it was usually part of a longer expression, like "I could care less about this, but I'd have to try" or "I could care less, but it would take actual effort." And meanwhile, everybody I hear using "could care less" is using it without a trace of its original ironic intent, as if it literally (I see what I did there) meant "I COULDN'T care less"... which is just fucking dumb, IMHO.

I've never heard the "I could care less" thing. I had no idea it was used to prefix a longer expression.
