A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

All of the usual forum rules apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

I don't know WHAT the Hell happened (I blame shenanigans) but we're going to start from scratch. Post your feels for this awesome show again! Naow!

@Marston. Point.

I guess it just sucks being part of a nostalgic fandom that's in it's death throws. The dvd release may help a little, but the fans are getting older, the toys crumbling, and it's well on it's way to being forgotten.

[up]Ironically I feel the same way about the Cowboy Bebop fandom. Not that the show is being Forgotten or anything {It's too much of a classic for that}, but since it's been 17 years after it ended, the fandom has kind of faded away and there's not too much to discuss about the show that hasn't already been said. There's also a lack of recent fanfics for it due to the same reasons too. So I kind of know how you feel

I've run into similar things, where stuff I really like either doesn't maintain an active fandom, or never really had an active fandom to begin with. It sucks.

My problem is that I keep getting into stuff long after it was new and relevant, so by the time I'm all hyped up and want to talk about it everybody else has already moved on. :P

@Wryte I always do that but I don't really care. When people stop talking about it, THAT is when I check it out and like it. That's why I'm waiting for people to stop watching Game of Thrones. I know it doesn't make any sense but trust me.

@Marcen I'd say Game of Thrones seems quite complicated as a storyline because from what I've read there are multiple factions and kingdoms plus ya gotta keep track of all of 'em.

@Star That's why I stick with MLP and, currently, Supernatural, which I finished the 1st 3 seasons in less than a month. I'm still not sure how I managed that.

@Marston. Makes sense, I'm part of the CB group. It's kinda fitting that a show meant to invoke being nostalgic and fading into a new era sorta became how the fandom feels about the show.

@Wryte: I'm the same way. Like I'm only just now getting to the end of Avatar The Last Airbender. And when it comes to video games I'm basically perpetually a year behind everybody else. There are very few exceptions. One of which will be the new Smash Bros.

I missed pretty much the entirety of the last console generation because I started playing Warcraft around the time it started. :P

Thirded.

The again it ALSO meant growing up in the nineties, which had a TON of simply amazing animation.

Most of the Disney Afternoon. Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck all that. Reboot, Beast Wars. The original Nicktoons and Cartoon Cartoons... before those channels mostly went to shit.

I've never been entirely sure how much you can laud the originator of certain genres and forms, based solely on the fact that it started them. I mean yes, it set things rolling, but by definition it tends to be pretty rough. Especially when it's based in technology. Like, with 2D animation there was always the chance of someone just being, like, a genius and coming up with really solid techniques, but with technology there's simply only so far you can go, and an artist using it tends not to be the same person developing it.

What I'm getting at is, while it improved as it went along Reboot looked like crap at the start. They're nurbs, for gods sake. Their shoulders were spheres that didn't animate at all. There was a character whose textures were all phongs(A hyper-reflective material that forms the base for polished metal and glass textures). And his name was Phong!

It's kind of a history lesson, and pretty funny if you know/are into that kind of stuff(Seriously, Phong's name was literally a joke), but that doesn't make it look good. I can't speak for the writing though, if you're referring to animation as in 'animated shows'. The most I remember is Matrix vaguely becoming a parody of himself and the first season villain rocking out at one point.

Yeah, but animation is only one part of what makes a good show. The writing can make up for it. Doesn't mean the animation can't age badly, though. Though I second the 90's having tons of good animated shows.

Yeah, like I said, if he meant the show as a whole then I'm sure it was pretty good. I don't remember it that well, but I recall enjoying it at the very least.

Just that, you know... it's old, and while it did pretty well with what it had, what it had was ultimately very limited, and the animators knew it(Seriously. Phong. I cannot get over that).

I'm right there with you. Certainly anything that was able to spawn an entire genre/continuity/etc. must have its merits and is worthy of recognition, but that alone doesn't make it good or better than what came after it.

Yeah the animation itself was bad by our standards, but that isn't what made the show so great.

hell look at Beast Wars as the best example of that. The animation is horrendous, but the characters, story and everything else was just so damn amazing.

Same for Reboot. Though that's mostly the latter seasons after they left ABC and stopped being strangled by Executive Meddling.

it's like complaining about FF 6 or Chrono Trigger because of the graphics.
