A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

That's the problem; we don't know whether the magic is visible in-universe because there are moments that could go either way.
My personal take is that there's a visual indication that a unicorn is casting a spell, but that the glow isn't easily distinguishable in-universe. Or it's different depending on what spell is being used.
Reaction Image RepositoryI return. It feels good to have Internet again.
Turns out one of my cousins is a big (and I mean big) Sonic fan, and as I was probably the only other real game nerd there, he kind of gravitated to me. And he's 8 years old. I mean, I could talk to him about the games themselves to an extent, but he kept segwaying into the various TV shows, which I've never watched. It got annoying after a day. I was there for four days.
In the free time I did manage to get for myself, I just about finished Final Fantasy, though the final boss can still kick my ass six ways to Sunday. And other than that, I really had nothing to do for all that time, since everyone else was there to get in the lake, and I am very much not an outdoor person.
So, what all did I miss while I was gone?
Re: Unicorn horns: My fanon on them is that they act as a focal point for the unicorn to concentrate on. Magic, in my take, is an ambient force, so they need to be able to focus it down to manipulate it enough to actually do anything, and they instinctively push and pull it through the tip of the horn(Which actually evolved for this purpose). Theoretically a unicorn could manipulate magic through any focal point on their body(Or, if they learn to perceive The Flow and understand it well enough, without any focal point at all), but it would be a long period of recovery. Similar to how a person who loses a hand could learn to manipulate things dextrously in another way, but it would be a difficult transition.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Well I'm exhausted from my second outing at the London Film and TV Comic Con. Weather was a bit drizzly when I arrived but it didn't really last long because it got very hot when I was in there mainly due to the sun being out for the most part. Anyways the con was good though I do think I've been spoilt a little by how the MCM expo turned out for me and I was expecting a bit more from this but then again this was the first convention I ever went to so fair's fair.
I managed to get some cool stuff while I was there as well as meet Jeremy Bulloch of Star Wars fame! Nothing much to say but it was really worth going to again.
"Transform and Roll out!" Optimus PrimeToday has been a rough day. I've had angry customers, confusing customers (referring to my manager as "Braun" rather than Caitlin, I honestly thought he was saying Ron), and some pervert calling and asking to "talk to lady." And I'm working a nine hour day. Sigh.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Also, either the mobile version of the bad translator doesn't have a random function, or the random function is completely broken. Again.
Good thing I got the essential stuff done yesterday.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/My headcanon on magic in general is an extrapolation of that idea. Basically, the magic is the same for all ponies, but each pony race processes it differently due to using different parts of their physiology as as focus points for the magic.
Unicorns naturally focus their magic through their horns, which gives them the greatest degree of active control over it. However, it also means that they never develop any passive magic; if they don't consciously and purposefully cast a spell, no magic happens, period.
Pegasi have semi-active magic. They can actively invoke it to influence their environment (such as manipulating air to enable them to fly), but they also have passive magic that naturally occurs without them having to consciously do it, like their cloudwalking.
Earth ponies have only passive magic; they can't purposely invoke any sort of spells or effect, but there's so much magical energy passing through them that it makes them much stronger and tougher than the other ponies, and because of the constant magical flow, they're more in tune with their environment.
Theoretically any pony could overcome those natural tendencies and learn any other sort of magic, but doing so would be very difficult.
Reaction Image RepositoryYeah, that about lines up with a more in-depth explanation of mine, too. The only exception being that Pegasi don't necessarily 'invoke' the magic for flying. In their case it's more like... E-zo users from Mass Effect: The magic itself is triggered by certain physical triggers, and they just learn to use those triggers rather than consciously using the powers. But in theory, they could learn to use it actively(Later on in the Colour You Bleed series I'd planned on setting a story in a Pegasi-only country, where several of them have learned to actively use magic, albeit largely in themed ways - Razor Wind, Blow You Away, and a major character who learned to coat herself in lightning and create low-pressure tunnels for extremely fast, short-range movement. While coated in lightning.), as could EP's, but in the 'verse Magical theory tends to be underdeveloped in a lot of ways, and is generally very closely guarded in the various countries it's been developed. The E Ps of El'Bia, for example, have learned to speed and control the growth of plants, which they use as a stand-in for technology, as well as discovering a mineral that hugely increases their magic input, but it takes a good deal of training and preparation to use otherwise the magic will overload the body and cause serious burnout.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Yeah, that's really just a different way of saying it. The short version is that unicorns are "Active", earth ponies are "Passive", and pegasi are somewhere in the middle. I originally worked it out as part of a fic idea where Twilight lost her horn and had to learn magic "manually", but after all the alicorn stuff happened I had to rework the premise a lot.
Reaction Image RepositoryOkay, update on the translator thing. The main version of the translator still works, just not the mobile one apparently. Also, Apple Blooom is a boy in this universe.
And Sweet Apple Acres is now "sweet apples lol." Apparently the place is hilarious.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I think I'm just gonna have someone laugh whenever it's mentioned. Calvados then asks them what's so funny.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/By the way, is anyone an Attack On Titan fan? I'm a little confused by episode 23.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI didn't see the anime, just the manga. I'm not sure what episode 23 corresponds to.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/It's the one where Annie's revealed as traitor and turns titan again. Anyway, the flashbacks in episode 24 clarify a little.

Also, the glow around Fluttershy in Green Isn't Your Color.
