A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

I lost a dog myself last year. He had lymphoma tic cancer that was making it so he couldn't walk, and though it was treatable it would only let him live for like four more months. I think I cried the most out of everyone and I think of myself as one of the more mature members of the family T_T And then we lost our young Great Dane a few weeks after when she ran off and got hit by a car :(
@Rainbow: Losing a pet is always hard. I was lucky enough to be away from home at college when my parents had to put our dog down, so I didn't have to be around for it. Still not fun, though.
As for tackling the subject of death in the show, that would be tough. I really doubt that they'd want to kill off any of the recurring characters, even if they are minor. The closest thing we might get is that apparently in season 5 we're getting an episode about Twilight dealing with the destruction of the library. Yeah, it's not death per se, but having your home and most of your possessions destroyed is definitely a hard thing to deal with, and the sense of dealing with loss is definitely there.
Reaction Image RepositoryThank you to everyone who offered their condolences.
Japanese Teeth, I know that it depends on the individual, but I wanted to be there for Diana, so I would have hated it if I wasn't with her when she died. I took off from my volunteer job (at a museum library, a job Twilight would LOVE and that I like doing too) that I usually go to on Wednesdays so that I could be with her on her last day. On the other hand, I'm also much less squeamish about death and medical issues than probably most people, given my own detailed medical history and love of science. So I can understand how it would be "lucky" for someone else to be gone if they wouldn't want to be there when the death is happening.
@Japanese Teeth: The scene where Twilight loses her house is kind of a death scene too, I agree, that was something I thought of when I was considering if the show would actually deal with a loved one dying. Perhaps a way they could tackle the issue without killing off an established cast member would be to have a family member or long-lost friend be introduced who we've never met before. One idea I thought of would be to have Rainbow Dash or Fluttershy need to go back to visit Cloudsdale to say goodbye to a dying grandparent. Then they could introduce one or both of their parents as well, since they're the only two of the Mane Six whose families haven't been explicitly introduced (there was a stallion seen in Games Ponies Play who is commonly speculated to be Rainbow Dash's dad, but he isn't outright identified that way in the show itself).

also, you have my condolences, rainbow.
XP granted for befriending a giant magical spider! My condolences, Rainbow. It did sound pretty serious when you mentioned it before.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau Project@Rainbow: They could do that, I guess, though it runs into possible Remember the New Guy? syndrome if they make a big deal about how close they were to their grandparent when it's never come up before. Definitely possible, though.
Reaction Image Repository@Dark: I will be able to deal with it in my own way, and I have my parents and my other two Pomeranians to help me. Thank you, though, and to everyone else.
For a more cheerful topic, although not one that most dogs would like, I was thinking about if the ponies have holidays that are associated with fireworks the way that Americans have the Fourth of July. Given what was shown of the Summer Sun Celebration where Twilight did a "sonic magicboom" that was kind of like fireworks, perhaps that is a holiday where they would set off fireworks. I also remember them having fireworks in both stories that included Trixie, not only in her performance shown in Boast Busters, but also in the show for the Saddle Arabian delegation in Magic Duel, and of course Spike set off the fireworks for the ending of the Equestria Games. Seems more like the ponies don't have a specific holiday that emphasizes fireworks, but instead use them in many types of celebrations.

XP granted for befriending a giant magical spider!Me to. At least this one will hopefully go faster than the last one.
They also had fireworks at the GGG IIRC.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play

I will be curious to see where the story has gone after the chapter I did.
On my birthday, I mentioned that I was taking my dog Diana (the Tsun Dere Elkhound) to an out-of-town vet to get a lump on her head checked out. My mom took her back there two days later (June 25) for a CT scan, and they found out that she had an aggressive melanoma in her sinuses, and that the lump on her head was due to the cancer in her head pushing up her brain and eating into her skull. It had also spread into her lungs, and the prognosis was that it would be pretty much impossible to cure her cancer since it had advanced that far. On July 2, yesterday, we had her euthanized (her vet came to our house and did it there so she could die in a familiar place) so that she would not suffer from it any longer; she was 13 years old at her death. She had a peaceful death surrounded by her "pack," including the two little Pomeranians, Luna and Lily. I will miss her, but I also will have the Poms to comfort me, since I grew closer to them once they came along, especially Luna.
On the subject of MLP, it makes me wonder if the show would ever have a character actually die who wasn't a villain, like perhaps Granny Smith, since the death of a grandparent would be a subject that the target audience would relate to, or maybe about a pet dying (they kind of did this with Philomena but she came back to life in the end since she's a phoenix). If this did happen, I would expect it to be in one of the finale or opening episodes, since that is usually when the status quo gets shaken up the most, and is also where the more serious stories tend to be placed.
