A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Has anyone here seen or read The Last Unicorn?

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/They have a a DVD of the movie for sale (6 bucks) at Safeway. Is it worth it?
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I vaguely recall reading the trope page. Wasn't there something about aliens in there?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Playreads trope page
Ok that is not at all what I was thinking of. I think I got it mixed up with this.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayCool. Now I just need to convince my sister to go and buy it.
I'm not gonna do it myself because people there know who I am.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Buy what, The Last Unicorn DVD? Doesn't seem like something to get embarassed over. It's not Twilight...
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayAnyone heard of a cartoon called Ruby Gloom? Keep hearing about it in a cultish tone among teenagers, it apparently aired in Canada only.
I used to watch it as a kid. It's a pretty fun show. Cute, likeable characters, and a nice Perky Goth thing going on. Also a prime example of a weird Canadian thing, which I always like, but that's just me.
Also re: combustion man and Combustion Lady: The character in Korra who can do it has the exact same tattoo on her forehead, suggesting it's a particular technique rather than a 'mutation' as, say, Tarrlok's bloodbending would have been. In all the shots where it's done, too, we see a line of air moving from the forehead to the explosion, so it's likely that the technique is like, supercompressing heat and air in a line - one it reaches the end of the line the air expands outwards, is now loose enough to catch fire... boom. I doubt Korra will go into any details as to the mechanics, though the source of the technique, perhaps. Combustion Man wouldn't have been able to take Combustion Lady as an apprentice, so there must be a third party, and they may be important.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. On a subject mentioned earlier in the thread, I do find that strange that it seems like there are specific background ponies that people give such specific relationships with each other to (the Lyra/Bon Bon and Octavia/DJ-Pon3 pairings) and that the general fandom would be very upset at the idea of splitting them up. I suppose it's because those are such popular fan interpretations that they are practically canon in many fans' minds and because fans made it up themselves, they have more personal emotional attachment to it. I guess I was wondering, which fanfic scenario would upset more fans:
- 1. A story that did extremely well at keeping the Mane 6 in their canon personalities and characterization but gave very different interpretations of background ponies that split up common pairs.
- 2. A story that has the Mane 6 acting wildly out of character with no in-story explanation (such as a "Freaky Friday" Flip) but keeps the common background ponies in their popular personalities and pairings.
The contrarian in me also likes the idea of splitting up those common pairings and giving different interpretations to background ponies, as an example, I find the idea of shipping DJ-Pon3 with Derpy to be amusing (mainly because they're the most common background ponies to get on merchandise) and think that it doesn't sound like an impossible pairing, even if one were to use their most common fanon personalities.
And on another pony topic, I was remembering the Flutterbat incident, and thought, what would happen if an Earth pony or unicorn got turned into a bat pony? Would it make them grow wings? I would assume so, unless it just gave them the hunger for sucking the fruit dry but didn't give them the wings that Fluttershy already had because she was a pegasus.

Personally, the latter would annoy me a lot more. In the first case, there's no established canon, so seeing it get messed up would be a lot less aggravating. The only reason I can see why the first option would be annoying is because it would come across as the author just trying to be contrarian for the sake of it. I.e. all the background ponies are O.C. Stand-in characters anyway, so if you don't want to use the canon characterization why not just pick a different BG pony with no established character? E.g. if you want to write a story about Derpy where she doesn't act at all like the fanon characterizaton, why write about Derpy at all and not some other background pony who doesn't have all the baggage?
@Japanese Teeth: I more meant for the fandom at large, I know that there are many individual fans who would rather see the show canon be followed rather than worrying about popular fanon being followed. I guess I was wondering how truly emotionally invested people are in these background pony ships and personalities, and how much of it is just joking that "you CAN'T split them up" or even joking that "people are going to be so angry if you split them up" but only a vocal minority would really be upset.
I of course don't have a problem with being rebellious to popular fanon for the sake of it, but that's just me, and I can understand how it would annoy someone else, especially if the author is doing it in order to provoke people. There are definitely other background ponies and especially toyline ponies that I think would be interesting to see be in more stories, and I know that there are some stories like that out there but they are definitely rarer than stories focused on the specific fan-favorite background ponies.

I'd honestly guess the latter. There are certainly people who'd get up on arms about it, but I'm guessing most people aren't so militant about it.

At least in that case, they could conceiveable have interacted before his banishment.
Anyway, it makes sense that with an older cast, there would be more romance, but the rate at which they break up and get back to together in different pairings seems like they're just doing it for the heck of it.
I do like the setting tech update though. It's a nice break from omnipresent Medival Stasis and it's actually realistic too.
I'm picturing this as Gloom the pokemon.
