A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

@Kegisak: The issues aren't really very evident until the last two issues. At that point, the romance takes over, and while the premise is okay, the romance really isn't interesting enough to merit spending the time on it, and the resolution is really rushed (and honestly kinda nonsensical). Now, I'm not going to be one of the "THE COMICS ARE RUINED FOREVER" people, but I will say that it's definitely the weakest arc so far in terms of writing. They attempt to use the plot to develop Celestia's character, but it just makes her come across is immature because she knowingly endangered two dimensions for the sake of her romance, and it's just at odds with everything we know of her characterization. The problem isn't the inclusion of Romance, per se, it's that they handled it badly.
On the other side, the Trixie/Rainbow Dash comic was a lot of fun. It brings back the Diamond Dogs.

Reaction Image RepositoryYeah, the only way that can work is if it predates the Vinyl Octavia shipping
Though people do sometimes just cast them platonic or interested in other muscians.
I suspect that was deliberate.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayOh joy. I had to come in at this exact moment.

As for romance in the show, I can't not ship Spike and Rarity. I know that since spike is still a kid it any work now but I'm thinking long term.
As for Flash as a character, if they bring him back for an episode (such as Teilightt being in charge of the guards for whatever reason) and have him actually do stuff, that'd be good for him.

You have quite the timing.
Yeah, Flash needs some more development.

Reaction Image RepositorySpeaking of romance, looks like Korra season 3 isn't up on Nick's website yet. Oh well, hopefully next week.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayBleh, I have to admit that all the shipping in season 1 of that kind of killed my interest. I have seen some of season 3, and it's pretty good.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectThe only other thing that stops me from totally enjoying Korra is the pacing. I know it's not really their fault, but stuff still just goes by too quickly in this format, and it makes things hard to register.
Pony has its share of pacing problems I know, but it's not as pronounced as that.

"Shrugs"Because...sparking an new interest?I'll be frank,I really don't a lot of times.There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer.
Pacing in general has been a bit of a problem recently in a some animated works(examples:FIM,Korra,Adventure Time).

My Tumblr "If theirs one thing I'm good at, it's blowing" Jesse Cox 2013Because of just how big the shipping wars were in Avatar, which handled it's romances pretty damn good, keeping them there, but never the focus. Knowing how rapid people were about shipping, they decided to focus more on romance, even setting up several changing official pairings to drum up interest, not realizing that shippers will just hate anything but the ship they want to see, and people that don't give a fuck, will simply hate the focus on romance and stupid freaking love triangles.
I'd have to finish the first series before I start on Korra. Although I will say that if it handles romance in the same way that the initial series does, that could indeed be a problem. So far, only the romance between Aang and Katara seems really developed, and all the others popped right out of nowhere. Sokka's thing with Suki showed up really rapidly (she macks on him at the end of her introductory episode), and his thing with the Moon Princess just always felt weird. Like, the show makes it out like they were star crossed lovers or something when they were never even dating. They had like, three conversations. And Zuko/Mai works, but it had like no buildup. Like they start making out like two episodes after they're first shown interacting.

Reaction Image RepositoryRomance aside, I actually enjoyed the first season of Korra. Amon was all sorts of badass and actually really liked the tech upgrade. (I'm a huge sucker for Steampunk/ Dieselpunk turn-of-the-century stuff.)
I started watching the second season, but I got distracted and started watching Sleepy Hollow with my mom.
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. Sark@Scott: Yeah. Even some animated movies have that problem. Dragons 2 was enjoyable, but things were happening a little too quickly. I'm not sure if it's just creators being too ambitious, or a deeper and more widespread issue.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWell the Zuko/Mai thing we get more shown of, it wasn't them just starting it there, they had an existing relationship before he got exiled.
Korra, over does it. It tries to have a love triangle, and like every other episode whose hooking up with who changes for the most random reasons. And none of them actually work, and feel like they are just there for the sake of having a romantic tension subplot.
@ Gwen, I'm not saying the tech was bad in and of itself, and it did do some interesting things with it, it just.. felt TO different from the original, and to fast. There was no gradual change just, suddenly cars and skyscrapers and power plants. it's just to big a shift to quickly for me to really enjoy it. Especially since it's so soon after the original.

You have to evolve romantic relationships naturally. If you try too hard, people notice.
