A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

I'm going to admit that the recent comic arc really makes me doubt how good of a writer Katie is. I mean, just how do you screw up something like that so badly?
Whenever you or someone else refers to Flash as a "Hairless Ape", for some reason I keep thinking of Frieza's insults towards the sayians.

Cadance and Shining are done fine, they aren't mane characters so yeah not going to see much. And the Cakes are fine. being IN a romance from the moment you enter the story.. they get off fine. But falling into one.. the writers have made clear they seem to think that anything involving falling in love renders you an utter moron.
And the Twilight one was the worst, and dumbest of the lot. No they were never 'an item' And the simple fact she would even get something that looked like a crush on some gangly, hairless ape, just from how dreamy he looked.. while having no bucking clue about anything about his race or species, and never having seen anything like him before, and being so at odds with everything she has seen just.. just... at least the other ones, while the ponies actions were freaking idiotic. Why they were falling in love or trying to be romantic made sense.
Ponies + Romance just do not mix.. at all.

The that bugs me the most about Reflections is how unfocused it is.It doesn't know if its about a mirrored verse, tia's past,Starswirl, alternate universes,or romance. Its a jumbled mess of gobbledygook.

I'm still giving her a chance,she hasn't annoyed yet,besides this arc.

My Tumblr "If theirs one thing I'm good at, it's blowing" Jesse Cox 2013@Kegi: I'd have been okay with the focus being more on good versions of previous villains rather than the evil mane six, but they could have at least made an appearance. And focusing entirely on Sombra instead of Chrysalis or Discord was a mistake. Since we know so little about evil Sombra, that makes good Sombra a blank slate. He's essentially an OC created to be shipped with Celestia. If they wanted to give Sombra more characterization they could have done an arc about him returning or something, but the entire point of an arc like this is seeing twisted versions of characters we know, so spending the entire time on a character we don't know is missing the entire point.
Yay for a joke sparking a bashfest. :/
Excuse me, I think I'll go sit over there with the cute Cadance x Shining arc.

Yeah, while we're at it, I suppose I should mention something else too: None of the authority figures except for Mayor Mare ever seem to be played comedically in the show. They're almost always involved in just world-threatening situations, so we never get to see them just casually hang out in a more calm episode or give them intentional flaws. In fact, Luna actually stopped being interesting for me because after Luna Eclipsed it seems she's only used as either a Mentor to the CMC {Minus Applebloom} or to be Celestia Number 2. I also wish that SA in the show was more like he was in the comics.

Well like I said, how well I feel it's done is hinged entirely upon how much characterization Good!Sombra is given. I know I want him to be good; I love his design and the idea of The Good King sticking it out for a thousand years like that is interesting - I've alwyas been a sucker for The King In The Mountain esque scenarios(Enough so that I'm seriously trying to find a way to combine Perak of Prague with King Wenceslas).
Nevertheless I haven't read it al so far, so I cannot make any judgements. It would surprise me, however, if the quality of the writing suddenly plummeted for this arc alone.
Er... well, setting aside some of the dubiously-done mini-arcs that I failed to care about, but...

Same here. Its why I love IDW!Luna.I hate how the show can never seem to give some sort of spotlight to anyone besides Mane 7,cmc,and occasionally the apples(namely Granny,Mac barely has a role at times).

B-but if you focus on other characters in the show, the kiddies will get confused!

From what I have to go off of, the comics seem like illustrated fanfiction. I'm not saying that as good or bad, just what I get.
They bring back the popular villains, background ponies are given fan personalities, they're Darker and Edgier, and marketed towards the older fanbase almost exclusively.
Heck most of the artists had fanart and the like before being tapped, and all admit to being big fans of the show.
Oy, if we had the authority and money, us tropers could make a better franchise. And why stop at ponies, we could improve other franchises as well! Imagine all the plot holes of Dragon Ball written out, all of the rancidness of Twilight removed, Dan Vs. being around again and the number 42 can actually have an actual meaning! TVTROPES CAN RULE THE WORLD, AND TAKE OVER THE UNIVERSE.
MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Just imagine if we could improve Family Guy, or Transformers Prime seasons 2 and 3, or the Star Wars prequels.
To improve Allen Gregory and Johnny Test, you'd have to make sure they never existed to begin with.

All that would result would be an eternal edit war.

(I'm a buttmad Celestia fangirl, thank you very much.
)
As little as I care about romance in the show, (because it effects so very little) I think it would be worth while exploring Cadence and Shining's marriage.
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkThe real problem is that as an ongoing franchise, superhero comics aren't allowed to progress meaningfully at all. Stand alone stories can be much better in that respect.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play

@Crowfall: I agree with the words you are saying, actually, ignoring the rather biting sarcasm. Evil-main-characters are kinda overdone, in my opinion, and largely bore me. They took the opportunity to build up a new character, and make a new story. And the best part is, in doing so, he informs the character of someone we've already seen.
That, of course, is if Good! Sombra turns out to have a character at all. The comics I've read up to have only just introduced him in person, so we shall see.
