A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

Well, stereotypes usually only gain as much ground as they do because people are willing to believe them.

So last night I watched thirty minutes of Atlas Shrugged: Part I.

It was about as bad as I expected: A movie made by people who don't seem to know how to make a movie. And the actors weren't very good. Apparently the lead actress has a big part on an acclaimed series on Netflix, which indicates she might not actually be a bad actor. Maybe the script just gave her nothing to work with. I'll have to investigate.

^^ That's should go without saying. I mean, it's Atlas Shrugged, the handbook for being a self-righteous prick just because you're rich.

Without going into the politics/philosophy behind the book, I just find it funny how Part I ended up being a complete critical and commercial failure of a film, and yet they still made a Part II and III.

Yeah, I love how that fact basically precludes the book's point.

And Part III was partially funded through Kickstarter.

And according to the funders of the film, the kickstarter wasn't even necessary, it was just to drum up attention for it's release and earn extra money.

So, what, they kickstarted an advertising budget? That feels subversive, somehow.

But, making a movie of Atlas Shrugged defies the morals of the original novel anyways. Even if a novel needs lots of people to publish it, the words and ideas still spring from a single person. But a movie has hundreds, if not thousands of people working on it. No one person can ever truly be said to have "made" that movie, so it kind of goes against the moral of making and owning something yourself, since it only exists through the efforts of community.

The morals may be banal and offensive, but goddamnit you should at least think this sort of thing through.

Speaking of Objectivism, I'm kind of contemplating getting the original Bioshock games on Steam while they're on sale.

Isn't the idea with kickstarter is that it's a way of getting backers for a project that needs money, not so you can make extra money on something you already have? That covered in their terms of service or something?

I believe the only condition is that it has to be raising money for a specific project, as opposed to just like, 'pay for my life'. That's what Patreon is for.

So, strictly speaking I think adding to a budget is a possible use...

I guess you could also call it "The Insult That Made a...Something Something Out of Twilight."

He's too shy/busy to see her in person.

Truly, there's is a romance that the stars themselves will sing of.
