A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

Question: When writing quotations (fanfics to be precise,) I wonder if certain quotes are considered more acceptable than others.

I see “this” used most often. But I'm not sure how to write those, so I usually go with "this" instead which I sometimes see in fics.

Also, because it's technically a different font, I can't make or read italics, so I usually work around writing character thoughts as just writing a new paragraph and starting another when the thought's done to prevent confusion.

I think it might be a regional thing. I know that at least in America, a double apostrophe is distinct from a quotation mark; I don't know if British English handles it differently. Or people might just be using double apostrophes instead of quote marks for some reason.

As far as I know, both types of double quotes are accepted and I've never seen anyone complain about one or the other. As for thoughts, while italics is generally the accepted way of doing it, I've also seen people talk about just using base font, possibly adding "thought" tags in the same way people do dialogue tags.

I think it varies based on viewpoint.

I tend to write in a non-omniscient third person, focusing on a single character's perspective but not actually going into their head, so I tend to use base text and thought tags, as a way of denoting that what's being given isn't exactly what they're thinking, but an approximation of it. I would use the italics if it were a first-person narrative, however, or if I was using third person omniscient.

Not sure what tags mean in that context.

But, thanks for clearing up the quote thing.

it's funny you should mention that. I do equal amounts of writing using google drive on my computer and from my phone. This becomes kind of a problem because my phone uses " while my computer uses .

So I always have to make a quick run through the chapter during final editing to make sure all of my quotation marks match up

I actually never noticed that before. "This" is what I always use.

@Dark: The 'tag' is a sort of descriptor for dialogue. Like in this:

"See?" she asked, stepping back. "Your favourite song, right? That's why you came here?" She smiled at him. It was a weak, unsure sort of smile. "I just wanted to talk. Or, well..." She shook her head, and sighed. "Not like you can understand me yet. Mmph..."

I'm not sure if your reader will display bolding at all. But in dialogue there, "She asked" is referred to as the dialogue tag. Anything that describes the way in which something is said, or who is saying it, basically.

Dark: Like in "All the ponies in this town are crazy!" Twilight yelled., 'Twilight yelled' would be the dialogue tag that associates her to the dialogue for the reader.

Yeah it can't detect bold, it's a problem for all readers in general related to fonts.

I get dialogue, I'm just not sure what to do about thoughts.

For my purposes it's a third person limited, with occasional pov switches still in third person limited.

Crimson: How else are we going to turn this into a pony fanfiction sweatshopget through the pony content drought? tongue

EDIT: [up] You could write it similar to dialogue, but without the quotes. For instance: I can't hold all these books, thought Twilight.

That's what I was going for. Though the tag might be a bit annoying for readers if I do it every time, so maybe not every time but often enough so that it's understood as a thought if it's a new paragraph.

Treat it as narration separated in separate paragraphs if that makes sense.

Other common options for internal thoughts are single quotation marks ('Did I leave the stove on?') or italics (Hmm. Should I get the chai or the earl grey?).

The single quote's a good idea, but the way my keyboard's configured as you can see there it works as an apostrophe. Not sure if that's a problem or not.

Also, can I use single quotes even if not tagged?
