A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Hey, I have a quick little informal survey for folks here who are not from either Canada or the United States:
When you guys think "America" do you think America specifically, or North America as a whole?
reason spoilered to avoid biasing answers: I came across a comment thread on another website claiming that 'Canada was part of America' because America referred to NA as a whole. In Canada we call the USA America, and we don not like being confused with or included in America, so being referred to as 'part of America' (especially having heard, if only by proxy, jokes about Canada being 'that big state up north') is really, really annoying, and I wanted to see if it was just an American thing or if that terminology was universal and it's just our own quirk of language annoying us.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. When I hear "America" I usually think "Fuck yeah!" next. (I forget where the song is from). So yes, I think of it as the USA.
Which is kind of weird. North America refers to the continent, America by itself refers to one country, which I think is technically a bad thing. We should call it the United States instead of America.

I'm not sure how useful the feedback could be since execution is everything.
It's just a metonym. That happens all the time in language.
Anyway, as far as I can tell, the use of America to refer to the USA is near universal.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Ike: It's from Team America World Police, a comedy made by the makers of South Park using puppets. (A movie I didn't find particularly funny, but then, I never really cared for South Park's brand of humor.)
As for America referring to the U.S. instead of the continents, my take on it is that "United States", while also commonly used, is also a fairly generic name. It could technically refer to any country that's composed of individual states. So, since "United States of America" is more unique (and though I'll probably have to check this, I don't think any other country in the hemisphere has "America" in its name), "America" came to mean the country more often, especially as it started becoming a world power.
Keg: America for the USA and North America for the continent for me. Somewhat tangentially, I think nothing of someone saying Canada is part of the Americas, since that, to me, refers to both NA and SA together.

On an unrelated note, I've decided to stop spamming threads whenever I upload a new comic page. If anyone's interested in continuing to read it, the links are in my sig, and I'm trying to update M/W/F (which more realistically means you should check T/Th/Sat for new pages). I've published two new pages since the last time I linked one here, too.
Well, it'd be one thing if it was the Americas. It's just Canada as a part of America, singular that bothers me.
Since yeah, The americas refers to both north and south to my mind too.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.I can see why someone outside the Americas might use 'America' to refer to North America though, so I tend not to get offended unless someone is explicitly trying to make bad jokes about Canada being part of the US.
FE: New Mystery Only Feet 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Umamusume Haru Arima 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiI suppose. In context, it was that the person went the extra mile to try and defend the use -without even being called on it yet - that annoyed me. That the knew they were gonna rustle some jimmies but insisted on it anyways.
Though, honestly, I know that this is a bit irrational on my part. While I'm not sure I'd call myself 'patriotic' in any way, I'm still proud of my identity of a Canadian, and feel that the distinction is important, especially as we gain more and more political, economic and cultural clout on the world stage, so I object to being 'grouped in' with what is, let's face it, the most culturally monolithic entity in the world. History has proven that when that happens, we tend to get drowned out.
That and, well... on some level I suppose I kind of let myself slip into the mindset of Canada being 'better' than the US, which regardless of any comparative merits of the two countries is very much a wrong way to think, and on some level I feel like being lumped in with America is dragging Canada down.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.I bought a Derpy keychain (and also a Youmu one) from a toy convention today. Yay pony merch?
@Kegi's poll: My first thought was just the USA, not all of North America. So yeah, I wouldn't think of Canada as part of "America". Part of North America, but not part of just America.
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...Okay, I liked it up until I saw her back in the last panel. I thought she was just really fat, which was funny. Being an actual pony-blueberry hybrid, is kind of weird.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Well, it looks like i'm back to watching LPS after today's episode.
Dakota's blog An odd agent of justiceAnd I will be back to watching that... Uh, I'm not.
