A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Except we have time to build Sauron as a threat, we see his machinations, we FEEL his presence. He was that concept executed right. Sombra, just didn't get enough real build up to be at that level. And they tried to give him some hints of personality, which just made everything worse.
Yeah great idea, but flawed execution.
I think in the Crystal Empire they just didn't have time to make Sombra a real character.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI still think the second half focusing on the other five goofing around to stall the crowd was fairly bland by comparison, time used for more stuff with Twi and Spike, or develope a bit of Sombra's backstory. Perhaps finding some secrets in his castle as to how he corrupted the ponies, so the reveal of the crystal could come off more dramatically.
Tirek's nice here, but lacks the subtlety and sheer presence that made him more threatening in the original. Not bad, but he sounds like the hulk when he growls and a giant monster that succeeds in draining every possible source of power is just overkill and ruins tension.
@Dark He was still a pretty good villain compared to say Sombra where he has no personality whatsoever. But yeah I reckon they should've fleshed his character a bit more, give him more lines, give more stuff to do plus what you said about how he enslaved the Crystal Empire.
"Transform and Roll out!" Optimus PrimeI guess the problem is that he becomes less Azula and more Commet!Ozai.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Dark: Yeah, Tirek did become slightly less interesting in the second half, but I think he still worked because it made sense with the plot. He had gotten to the point where he had enough power to not bother being tricky. It showed just how successful he had been up to this point.
And now for something completely different: Today I am attempting to make my own barbecue sauce.
Reaction Image RepositoryOkay, I'm impressed. This has got to be one of the better implementations of a "Leave Your Quest" Test that I've seen in a while. Mainly because they actually coupled it with the protagonists having legitimate reasons for doubting whether what they're doing is right.
He seems just as great if not moreso the second half.
He's large, his shear raw presence is overwhelming. he's managed to do what no villain yet has done. Just the shear power he holds, and makes clear he holds is extraordinary. You can't ignore him, and you KNOW he is a threat everytime he does anything. Plus he never loses his guile and skill, never forsakes them for power. Simply uses both as needed. When he has enough raw power to whatever he wants, he simply uses it, but always while paying attention and planning ways around when raw power alone won't be enough, right up till the end.
I think MLP could use a few less Large Ham villains, and some more subtle villains. Tirek was cool and creepy in the first part, but he kinda lost that edge with the second half.
Chrysalis could have gone that way, had she bothered to continue beyond the physical masquerade, and had Twilight only realize something was wrong when she began slipping up on more intimate details about Cadence and her relationships.
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkDiamond Tiara actually works pretty well in that respect. At least when she isn't being a straight up brat.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI second the need for a more subtle villain. Not because any of the ones we had so far were bad per se, but because Tirek is really about as high as they can push the potential power levels without starting to get absurd. To introduce a villain with more raw power would really be overkill. One of the things I liked about Discord's first appearance was that he didn't rely purely on raw power; he manipulated the ponies into neutralizing his weakness, so even if he wouldn't be a reality warper he would still be a threat.
Reaction Image RepositoryDiscord used his powers in more of a creative manner than Tirek, while Tirek just blew stuff up. Discord used his wit and powers to needle at the Mane 6's insecurities. The only time Tirek did that was when he preyed upon Discord's selfish nature and used Twilight's friends as bargaining chips against her. And the latter only happened after Discord told him about them.
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkDiscord is pretty good at mainpulation even without using his powers. Though Fluttershy is his big weakness both evil and good.

I still like my idea that people start tearing up Rarity's outfits when they realize she's selling them at below the value of the gems.
Yeah, it's pretty much nonstop visual gags whenever he's talking. Sorry about that.
Don't forget the stair fetish!
I agree completely. Just not on which villians those are

Obviously.
Xavier is even more OP and yet the writers always manage to find excuses to keep him out of action.
