A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

@Ike: It's annoying, but kind of inevitable.

Re: Avatar: All of that is true, but not much of it is actually stated in the show itself. Also, there's little explanation as to why the Fire Nation is the only technologically advanced country. The Water Tribe and Air Nomads I can understand, what with the whole "Living on icebergs and a mountaintops" thing, but the Earth Kingdom should have a freaking monopoly on mining, and they have a ton of resources to work with. It just strikes me as weird that the show's premise treats the groups as equal when in-show all counts show the firebenders to capable of curbstomping everyone unless the avatar gets involved.

@JT A country that has a ton of resources but is still incredibly backwards is not an unrealistic thing. I live in one of those.

I might get the entire Avatar series later today. Also, I need Pokémon Soul Silver.

[up][up]Like I said, the problem isn't that the other nations are behind, it's that the show presents them as being more or less equal in the intro, and then doesn't bear it out. It does make sense in-universe, but it doesn't establish those points when it would be relevant to do so. A good example is the first episode; it makes perfect sense that the Southern Water Tribe might have been dwindling for years as the result of the war, but since that's never pointed out (the closest we get is a statement that the men of the tribe have gone off to war, which implies that the tribe is at full strength, only without the guys), it seems like the entire tribe consists of a single village of two dozen people. There's a reason for it, but they don't give the reason until long after the info is relevant.

Seems a little nitpicky, honestly to me. It's a world war, and a losing one at that.

@JT You'll see more of the Earth Kingdom as the series progresses. By the end of season 2 you'll see all of it. Maybe you'll find an answer there.

I'm not trying to make it out as a major issue with the show or anything; it's just a minor issue I felt could've been handled more smoothly by giving more information earlier on. Then again, if they did that I'd probably complain about infodumps.

The second season has been pretty good so far.

Also, Azula is already a way more interesting character than Zhao ever was. And I'm sure there's a ton of crossover art involving Mai and Maud. Iroh kinda grabbed the Idiot Ball with the "Delectable tea or deadly poison?" though. Then again, he's always been a bit goofy.

I wonder if the class divide in Equestria will cause any problems in Season Five. There's signs of a powerful Earth Pony merchantry in Manehatten that might end up conflicting with the Old Noble Houses based in Canterlot.

I think it would be amusing if they played that up and then revealed that outside of Canterlot nobody gives a crap about the nobility.

I always pronounced Mai's name as 'My', not 'May'.

Then again, some of their pronunciations for names don't make total sense to me, being actually Asian.

[up][up]I didn't think it was weird until I saw how it was spelled. Would make more sense if it were "Mei" instead of "Mai".

@Ace: Well, they're important in Canterlot, but she needs to appeal to other ponies in Manehattan.

[up][up][up]'May' seemed weird to me too with that spelling, but Yu Gi Oh's probably more of a factor in that.

Mai works best because Fire Nation has a "kind of Japanese" motif going on. That spelling makes it look the part.

P.S. Although it does have some mistakes in this regard. "Iroh" should have been "Irou", only "n" is allowed to be a single consonant in Japanese.

Along the same lines, before I watched the show, I would have pronounced 'Iroh' as Ee-roh, not Eye-roh. That's a more American pronunciation.

So yeah, being Asian makes some of the names sound weird as hell because... well, we just wouldn't pronounce it that way.

I had no clue how "Aang" was supposed to be pronounced until I watched the show. At least "Momo" is easy enough.

Phonetics makes for some hilariously oddly-spelled romanisations.

Aang.. well, the movie may actually have been more correct in pronouncing it as 'Ung'. But I prefer the way the show does it.

I thought the Fire Nation was supposed to be Chinese... But then again, Japanese Imperialism would work, too, now that I think about it.

Chinese motif is Earth Kingdom's thing. "Toph Bei Fong", "Ba Sing Se", etc etc.
