A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

I skipped a bunch of episodes, so I guess I had less problems with filler. Season 1 is the most episodic. It gets more plot focused in seasons 2 and 3, though there are still episodes I'd classify as filler. And some filler episodes are still good. For example, Ember Island Players has no plot relevance at all, but it's really great at poking fun at iself and the fanbase.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI do think that the season 3 finale was a big disapointment though. Especially after how awesome the season 2 ending was.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayStill don't get how you can skip an episode.. just.. can't do it. If I'm watching a show, I have to watch the whole story.. or what's the point? Maybe on rewatches. Only time I've ever skipped an episode.... was once. And that's cause I already knew everything about it, including how infamously horrible it was, why, and really nothing that watching it could add. As well as the fact it had nothing to really do with... anything. Doctor Who's Love and Monsters.
"And some filler episodes are still good."
Again, what the hell is this whole issue with 'filler'? If it's a good story in and of itself, that's really all that should matter.

I don't see the big deal about skipping episodes. I often skip episodes.
Though ATLA is a special case because I had already read the synopsis of many episodes but didn't actually start watching them until halfway through season 3. So I just skipped around watching whichever episodes I thought would be most interesting.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayUnless it's "The Great Divide", which has no relevance to anything.
Also, the bit about learning the elements in order is a good explanation, but as far as I remember that's never actually been pointed out at that point in the series.
Reaction Image RepositoryThe thing is that often times in a TV show, there are episodes with little or no relevance to the overall story. If you're going to watch episodes, why not watch the most entertaining or interesting ones? If it's that important, you can just read a summary.
Heck, I followed ATLA by reading episode transcripts on a fansite for ages before I discovered a site that had the videos online.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI think it depends on the nature of the show. For a show like ATLA that's plot heavy, I think you can skip the fillery episodes without missing too much. Though on the flipside, even if they aren't directly plot relevant they can still be entertaining, which is why I tend to watch everything. Even if it's not directly plot relevant, the episodes can still be fun to watch.
Reaction Image RepositoryAlso, it depends a lot on how tightly plotted the show is. For Madoka or Attack On Titan, I don't think there are any episodes you can skip (though Madoka was only 12 to begin with).
Compare to something like Burn Notice, where you can keep track of the plot pretty well just by watching 3-4 episodes a season.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayThat too. It depends on how entertaining the episodes are. That's why I skipped a lot more Adventure Time episodes than say, Veronica Mars (at least season 1).
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI don't skip episodes if I can help it. For MLP the only episode I haven't seen all of is Trade Ya and even that I saw the first half of. I just really haven't had time.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I don't care for Haruhi. It sounds kind of dumb.
Now if I DID watch the show, i would do that. But the show itself isn't something I care about.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Thanks for the video, Irish. I really hope the prediction of copyright laws pans out. I don't like that fanworks are in the grey zone.
Edit: I want to watch the entire Endless Eight. It sounds like a very interesting thing. But I didn't like Haruhi (too much Nightmare Fuel), so I never saw the second season.

Regardless of some overall plot, they are still part of the story. Maybe not a big part, but still something that happens in the story.
Only way I'll skip an episode is if it 1. as absolutely zero relevance in any way to anything else. and 2. Is pretty well regarded as being just plain horrible.
Also why I end up not getting into a lot of major things, because now they spread the story out into so many different things, it's hard to keep track and actually get the FULL story. Got me out of kingdom Hearts, a bunch of other things.. yeah unless I can get every single bit of the story... I just can't bother getting attached to it.
@CDRW: From what I've heard, the episodes in question aren't really different enough to justify watching them all.

I think that's enough, overhyping can be a real problem for a newcomer, and it's edging towards spoiler territory as it is. Sure it's a good show, but let him figure that one out.
