A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Well that was remarkably disappointing. 3 episodes of build up to the games, and then we just get a Spike episode. And they didn't even try to present the actual games as something that people wanted to see they were just a framing device. This isn't the first time the writers took a great idea and then did something idiotic with it. They waste opportunities all the time, and still everyone thinks they're brilliant for it.
Maybe wanting something besides basic slice of life moral lessons or God forbid, something exciting and unexpected is just too much to ask from this show. I think I see that now. Well, since the finale's sure to be another disappointment ladened with deus ex machina, just like all villain episodes are, I think it's time for me to hang up the horn and the wings and find something else to watch.
Just Having FunSpike's ad-libbed anthem is either the most hilarious point of the episode, or makes you wanna turn off your TV for a minute so you don't have to see Spike crash and BURN!
Then you come to the realization that... yes, Daniel Ingram had to WRITE THAT. Enjoy your seething, folks.

Not really. It wouldn't be that different from Best Night Ever hypothetically, just bigger.
I don't really agree, but that's probably one reason we have different opinions on this.
I had that scene on mute. It did not help the cringing.

Well. Can't say I don't disagree. Just not nearly as strongly (for now).

I still don't get why people were saying the Games were 'out of focus'. They were as in focus and relevant to the plot as you could reasonably expect them to be.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayIf you consider that Return of Harmony was originally planned to be the season 1 finale, it has a lot in common. Since they were both one shot episodes right before the finale centering around an event with some foreshadowing and a relatively slice of life plot.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySince we only have 2 episodes to go and we pretty much know what elements of the plot is going to be, I can safely say right now that this season was underwhelming and riddled with tons of poor writing, even compared to how well-written this show usually is, harmed in a large part by having new writers. The sole perfect, and thoroughly enjoyable all the way through, episodes to me were "Pinkie Pride", "Pinkie Apple Pie", and "Maud Pie", ... in fact, all the Pinkie episodes by coincidence.

I'm not sure if I would fault the new writing staff, even if I do feel they weren't particularly spectacular.
Also I thoroughly disagree with you on Pinkie.
@story: I understand that given the context. That doesn't stop it from being a lot of build up to what was something that many found unsatisfying.
It doesn't matter if it makes sense that it happened that way if it's still not particularly good.

Man, this is going to be like the Draing Don't debate all over again, isn't it.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySince apparently I can't help but add my two cents even when I'm at work, here's how I think the Equetria Games went down in planning.
The team obviously wanted the games to be the arc of S4 as early as S3. They planned ahead because they couldn't put it in S3, but early S4 production they get the mandate to put in Rainbow Power and the new Kingdom. Team scrambles a bit because it's too late to retcon the games.
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkAnd no, this season has been amazing and by far the best one yet. Only two episode were even close to sub-par, rainbow falls, which had a ton of issues, and Simple Ways, which actually had a tone of amazing scenes, plenty of hilarity, and really a lot of good stuff in it, it was all just based on an idiotic premise. And unlike Games Pony's Play the good parts weren't able to out weigh the bad ones enough to make it enjoyable regardless of the flaws.
Do you have any evidence that the Games were planned to be the main arc of season 4? I don't see how it's 'obvious'.
Also, this.
I'm having trouble figuring out what people even expected. Straight out games coverage with no focus on plot or characters?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayNo, but at least a decent amount of focus ON the games themselves. You build it up for over a year, dedicate whole other episodes based on it. Call the episode "The Equestria Games" and then nothing about the episode is actually about the games themselves. They got pushed to the sidelines and had no actual impact on the story itself.
Compare Best night ever. It was actually ABOUT the GGG, while still being character focused. It was the GGG that was driving the story, by being what the characters were reacting to. EG, nope. The games themselves had no direct bearing on the story aside from being the setting. Nothing about what was going on was directly related to the games themselves.
Also, as far as magic being invisible, Green Isn't Your Color would be a better argument.
See I just don't get this. I mean the inital plot was kicked off as a direct result of Spike being required to perform in the opening ceremony, and the games are shown throughout the episode.

And back and forth and back and forth and back and forth. You do need to get used to the idea that other people may see things differently, and maybe agree to disagree occasionally.
I'm going to bed now. Tell me how this went.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWell in the case of Daring Don't I think we ended up just agreeing to disagree. But back then, Sera was pretty much alone on his side.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayBut that had nothing to actually do with the Games. you could have replaced the torch lighting with any public event and wouldn't change a thing. We see very very little of the actual games themselves, not enough to justify over a year of build up, and none of it has any impact on the actual story. It's just a background to things. The issue is nothing about the episode "The Equestria Games." Was really about the games, aside from the pep talk Dash gave in the Cold Open.
No, not alone, recall a lot of others not having issues with Daring being real.

And you could have replaced the GGG with any overhyped event? Point?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play

I was going to say this is a horrible episode.... until I watched Firebrand's review, and he brought this up: Spike's hesitation and fear of going out into the stadium is ENTIRELY REALISTIC. For a marine core who has to content with being called a hero even though you don't feel like one, and having to go in front of thousands of people in the name of the country and patriotism, this strikes home for him really well. So while it's nowhere near the best episode, I like a bit more.
