A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

@Sera: It just shows how far they've come. In the old days there were repeats in crowd scenes everywhere, and while they still use some repeat filler it's far less noticeable.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau Project@Sera: Likely because we already had the "Rainbow Power" arc going and this show has really never done more then one major arc a season (when it does one that is). Which is also partially why I think they intended The Games to be the major arc of Season 4 before the toy department came out with the Rainbow Power line.
Actually there are two Cherilee at the bottom if you look closely.
Because you need a conflict for an episode, and they already explored the major elements of the games in previous episodes.
The real life olympics are boring enough.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayAnd what does any of that have to do with it being 'obvious' that the games would be written off as a completely background event that had no bearing on anything?
Yeah it wouldn't be JUST nothing but event and event, but it still should have had SOME bearing on the actual story, some importance, seen something more then two events.
@Mio: I knew I had to adjust my expectations slightly once the schedule listed 'Equestria Games' as just the one episode. That sounds like a plausible enough theory though. It would have to have happened early on in the writing process, because the RP arc is one you plan in advance.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau Projecti saw Coco Pommel in that crowd shot a page back. i saw Photo Finish, Twist, and Prince Blueblood in there too. and hey, Sapphire Shores made it out.
wait, Braeburn?

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.The thing is though that the Games would never be the main season ending arc because it doesn't have anything to do with the plot set up at the beginning of the season. And since it wouldn't be the the season finale, that means one episode tops. Honestly, there was as much shown of the games as you had any right to expect. Two events plus the opening ceremony is pretty good considering it has to fit into a 22 minute episode with all the other stuff.
I don't really see that. I mean the Rainbow Power thing was clearly set up in the opener, so if there was any point it was ever planned, it would have had to back during Games Ponies Play.
And the other thing is that having just the games doesn't feel like the kind of finale they normally do. Unless of course it got invaded by monsters halfway through ACW style.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayFor the record, this is the only season so far where the finale is connected to the opening 2-parter.
last paragraph- kinda like Canterlot Wedding?

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I hope someone got fired for that blunder.
Anyway, I hope they discontinue the ice archery event at the next games. It's a miracle an accident like that didn't happen before. Still, it's nice that Spike got a hero moment. I don't think he's had one since Crystal Empire.
And I think they're pretending Equestria Girls didn't happen. I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about that.
If you consider that Return Of Harmony was originally planned to be the season 1 finale, then it has a lot of paralells to season 1.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWe got almost nothing about the actual games, and the episode, CALLED "The Equestria games" really had nothing to do with them. You could have taken out the Games, and the story would work with anything close. They were a background event, nothing important to anything. They drug out so many of the cringe worthy, Spike being overwhelmed or acting idiotic bits, when they could have put those to better use actually exploring the games themselves.
And I wouldn't say the games had no bearing on the story whatsoever. The crowd pressure from thousands of fans (many of whom, let it be noted, REALLY like Spike, so more stress) starts the conflict off, the ice archery event causes the dramatic finish, then Spike getting a second chance by lighting the fireworks closes it out. OK, you could apply those elements in a different setting, but this is as good as any.
@Ike: Season 3 had DA BOOK, but yeah, it's the first time Pony has ever had that kind of connective tissue between start and end. Should make things much smoother because we've been anticipating it awhile.
Speaking of the finale, all the key episodes have been about how the Mane 6 inspired other ponies based on their elements. And one particular shot in the recent season finale preview kind of gives me a clue where they're going with this angle.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectThe timing just makes no sense, and may just be the biggest prank this season ever made! Why build up the Equestria Games so much, CALL the third-to-last episode "Equestria Games", open with Dash being the center of attention for the first 2 minutes.... only to reveal that the whole games are shafted out of focus for yet another story about Spike, NOT EVEN one of the Mane Six, who already had his own episode literally a week prior???? It just doesn't make sense!!
It did give us a new and exciting ship pairing though.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI like how the episode provides implicit confirmation that unicorn magic is basically invisible. If it were visible to the characters in-universe, everyone would have known Spike didn't light the torch, as Twilight's magic aura was plainly visible, especially to him since he was right there as the spell was being cast.

I don't see how it was obvious at all that the games weren't going to be big. I mean, obviously the finale wouldn't be about just the games, just like Canterlot Wedding wasn't just about the wedding, but I thought maybe they had been setting things up for the finale. Maybe we would see, I don't know, more than two events, and the villain would try to attack the games while leaders of various nations were all in one place.
