A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

All of the usual forum rules apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

I don't know WHAT the Hell happened (I blame shenanigans) but we're going to start from scratch. Post your feels for this awesome show again! Naow!

Were the games a mostly Pegasi thing?

Couldn't tell. They do have security measures for unicorns so they can't cast any spells to cheat.

I feel like Ponyville winning so many medals sort of goes against the small-town feel it generally has. Unless Ponyville's suddenly become one of Equestria's major population centers, it seems a bit of a stretch to believe they would win more medals than Cloudsdale, which always seemed like a larger city to me.
Maybe it's the fact that Ponyville fielded athletes from all three tribes, while Cloudsdale only fielded pegasi.

We didn't see that many events, but one of them was a form of archery, so no, not entirely pegusi events. I do wonder if there were unicorn events and they had their magic restrictions lifted for that.

[up][up]That's my guess. Ponyville has a relatively even mix of races, where as other cities we've seen tend to skew towards certain races. Cloudsdale probably cleaned up on the Pegasus events, but couldn't field any athletes for EP or Unicorn ones. Ponyville didn't dominate any particular set of events, but they were able to have athletes in a wider variety of events.

It also explains why RD takes credit for helping Ponyville win the medal count; Ponyville normally can't medal in pegasi events because Cloudsdale dominates them, hence when RD is able to pull out a silver it puts Ponyville higher in the overall count than they usually are.

[up]I'd assume that they do; we just don't see them because 1. It isn't important to the plot 2. it would be difficult to come up with ideas for unicorn-specific events.

So, unlike "The Last Roundup", Applejacking actually worked this time.

@Dark: Does Danny know about that? It might not have come up directly while he's around.

wild mass guessThe unicorn-specific events are either so dangerous that they can only be held in special lead-lined underground bunkers, or they're so esoteric that only other unicorns can tell what's going on.wild mass guess

Well, levitation would be kinda boring watching say, two unicorns balancing a pendulum for 3 hours. The sport's fans are watching on the edge of their seats for the slightest fraction of an inch, and the rest of the audience are falling asleep.

They could do stuff like TK tug of war or juggling or something. To say nothing of the more artistic events like the unicorn equivalent of Rhythmic Gymnastics or whatever.

Or levitation weight lifting. Having to hold more and more weight as objects are piled on.

I'd imagine magic would be like exercise, stop doing it and it becomes harder and less effective. Practice and practice and you'll be able to do more and gain strength, just don't try to hard or you'll burn out.

[down] Lol, now you've got me imagining a lightsaber duel with glowing horns.

Nah, the main unicorn event is jousting. They just point their horns forward and run.

I really identified with Spike this episode. And I found the "anthem" hilarious! I wonder if we'll ever find out the real version.

Wow, that episode was pretty good. Especially surprising considering it was a Spike episode.

  • "This just got real"? Nice anagram on the first word
  • Wow, surprised to see the continuity with Crystal Empire
  • Man, Twilight does not look happy about the seating arangements
  • I'm sure that disabling spell is going to come up in fanfics a lot.

Did they just blow up Twilight's library? Nooo!

If it's actually part of the plot, that means it won't inexplicably be back to normal by the next episode either, like the last half dozen times it happened.

MR the Dragon is never getting old.

Oh yeah, that was hilarious.

You know, this entire episode could have been avoided if they had rehearsed the opening ceremonies.

He could have still done it during hte rehersal but locked up in front of the crowds.

Ice Archery is interesting. The archer has to have enough control to hit every spot on the target.

Also it's a balance of speed and precision. Pretty interesting idea.

Yeah, I figured he hadn't really scaled up yet.

We do know that the strange weather at least extended to other towns based on the opening scene.

I guess they're just pretending Equestria Girls never happened?

I thought we agreed never to speak of this again.

I'd think it's safe to say Ponyville isn't the same out of the way small town anymore from season 1. We've got the Elements, a princess, a dragon, a spirit of chaos, and all kinds of weird stuff going on every few weeks.

Also, a direct train line to the capital.

Note that they consistently said medals rather than gold medals. Top 3 suffices.
