It was also another Spike Finds a Weird Magical Book™ episode.

Couldn't Spike just fit through those bars anyway? Also, retrieving a plot device from the castle? This is going to be like Power Ponies all over again, isn't it.

Wow, I was not expecting Spike to actually steal and keep the book. I assumed Rarity would either hold on to it or con it back. So points for that.

I watched it again, and I do actually like how the insanity was underplayed. If this was half an hour longer that gradual turn up could have been terrifying to watch.

It feels more like a beginning to something, which is both a strength and weakness. It kind of ends before it begins.

Spike and Owlowiscious is an underplayed comedy team that needs to appear more often, BTW.

Did she, like, replace the musicians, or change them?

I was wondering that too. I prefer to assume the former, since it's less horrifying.

It was obvious what the ending would need to be. I'll need to watch it again just to take it in some more.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious how the plot would go, but the interest is in the journey.

Episodes can be over the top, like parasprites destroying Ponyville was hilarious because it worked for the episode. Here, a fashioist dictator tries to glamorize Ponyville and barely any drama happens.

I don't really see the complaints about it not being dramatic enough. She basically destroyed Ponyville and was about to go rampaging over the rest of Equestria.

It just needed more build, I feel. I like it fine. And after a few watches, I appreciate it more.

I think Rarity being more over-the-top would've strained the credibility more. Having her start small and gradually working up to the point where it's obviously a problem makes more sense to have Spike not immediately do something. If she were more over-the-top, Spike's uncertainty would've been a little less believable and a bit more contrived.

That was a great story with a lesson I like, considering that honesty is very important to me. The various things Rarity did to the town and other ponies were pretty funny, too. Comments I have about it:

  • The part where Spike takes the book and is so oblivious to any danger around him reminds me of my dog Luna, who is a Fearless Fool most of the time.
  • I noticed a bunch of popular background ponies in the crowd scenes. Aside from Octavia being one of the ponies who replaced the Mexican band, I noticed Bulk Biceps, DJ Pon3 (at the market), Blossomforth (shielding her eyes from the golden roads), and Berry Punch (trapped in the gazebo). I also noticed that Amethyst Star and Dinky were next to each other in one scene, it's my personal headcanon that they really are sisters (whether or not either of them is related to Derpy is a whole other story because I don't necessarily think that Dinky is her daughter) so I was glad to see a nod to that.
  • The part where she turns the birdhouse into a mansion reminded me of a story I read once about Paris Hilton saying that she had a "dog mansion" for her dogs that I thought sounded more like it was something that the humans would think is cute more than something the dogs would actually enjoy.
  • This story is kind of the "evil foil" to Suited for Success where in this story, Rarity was forcing her design changes on other ponies and on the town in general without thinking about what they would enjoy or even need, whereas in Suited for Success she went overboard in trying to make the dresses exactly what her friends asked for, at the expense of her own artistic vision and knowledge of what would be considered in good taste at the Gala.
  • Speaking of the Gala, looks like Rarity was being a foil for Pinkie's behavior at the Gala. At the Gala, Pinkie expected it to be like a kid's birthday party and was disappointed at it being so fancy and high-class and tried to make it into what she wanted (even messing with the band and changing their music). In this one, Rarity messes up a kid's birthday party that Pinkie was hosting and turns into something more like the Gala or the garden party in Sweet and Elite, including altering the music (and adding in Octavia who made her debut in The Best Night Ever).

Did anyone find it hilarious how Twilight ends an episode harried and angry at someone for once?? :D

I found it interesting how they actually explained the rapid recovery. I thought it was just going to miraculously heal between episodes like Swarm of the Century.

The only thing I know about Saved By The Bell is that the main character is apparently Haruhi, given his ability to pull stunts like holding a birthday party in the principle's office during school without getting in trouble.

Ah Saved by the Bell, the corny ham and cheesy show that was from the 90s trying to stay in the 80s according to the Nostalgia Critic.
