A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Hi I'm a Celestia fan, welcome to my plight.
Okay, okay, I'm done being a jerk.
But in all seriousness, I feel like the writers have upped his physical comedy more over the seasons, whereas I think Twilight was more of the Butt-Monkey early on. I find this a little odd since McCarthy is head writer, and I personally think she does the best at writing Spike.
I think comparing him to Meg is a bit of a stretch, though. No character is intentionally abusive toward him.
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. Sark
Okay fine, maybe Squidward in the later seasons would be a better comparison.
I wouldn't say he's quite a Butt-Monkey; he does get used for slapstick a lot, but no more than most of the cast. The difference is that he lacks the focus to compensate for it. But unlike Meg, at least the rest of the cast like him.
Reaction Image RepositoryI haven't noticed much of a difference. Remember Owl's Well That Ends Well?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayAlso remember that as a dragon, Spike's more resilient to injury than the rest of the cast, and so can be used in a wider variety of slapstick situations. I doubt any other major character would be uninjured after a belly flop into a pool of lava.
Well, other than Discord, but when he's around, he's generally he's the one causing the slapstick.
Either that or he pissed off the editor.
Anyway, I'm going to head to bed now. I'll be hanging around tomorrow a bit, but after that I'm leaving for the weekend and have no clue if I'll be on or not. In any case, enjoy the episode.
Spike never has been treated as well as the mane cast, and never will be.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/But Spike doesn't have a soul gem.
Now I have this mental image of Spike eating soul gems.
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...Well, at least he got a filly of the book with a crush on Charity. Though admittedly it was because Charity looks a lot like Rarity, so it's debatable.
Charity will always be the Fanfic Within A Show thing from Fi W to me.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI should probably go to the ubuntu forums tomorrow and figure out how to make my computer let me extract files to the usr folder. Half the stuff I want doesn't have instructions to install via the terminal.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I heard about that. Reminds me of this story from way back when, where a new pony arrives in town that's basically Twilight's Palette Swap. Twilight goes kind of off the deep end and nearly ends up getting her killed before realizing what she's doing.
EDIT: Found it. It's called Twilight's Best Friend. And it is old. Like, before the end of S1 old.

I remember both those stories. A Friend for Derpy Hooves was probably the first or second fanfic I read... either that or Moonbeam.
Twilight's Best Friend I read for a sporking. I still find the "No such thing as murder" line funny.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.I suppose as a way of marking what continuity/when compared to Canon the events occur?
I prefer to keep it as nebulous as possible, personally, but I rarely if ever write involving the mane characters.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Moonbeam, as in Princess Luna's I Just Want to Be Normal fanfic Moonbeam?
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...The very same, if I recall correctly. She comes to Ponyville as an Earth Pony and makes some friends among the locals.

So, does anyone here get really annoyed at Spike's Butt-Monkey treatment? It wasn't so bad for the first couple of seasons, but it's been getting worse IMO. He seems to exist mostly for being the FIM equivalent of Meg Griffin, and it feels like the writers have no idea what to do with him. I'm not even a fan of Spike to begin with and it still annoys the heck out of me.
