A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

@Sereg: She's still an adult, and if anything's been proven to me, it's that all the kids still adore the Mane Six to some degree, even DT.

Diamond Tiara has openly mocked Abblebloom's family before. At best she's shown grudging appreciation for Pinkie's parties. There's no evidence that she looked up to the Mane Six before then and decent evidence of the opposite.

EDIT: What Seraphem said.

Regardless of sincerity or intentions, Diamond and Spoony were legit adorbs in that episode.

I may be misrembering, but I didn't think DT's approval of Pinkie's party was gruding.

With a look on her face making clear she wasn't happy having to say it.

She did say though thanks to Pinkie Pie, so I guess some of it was genuine.

I don't think she was unhappy to say it so much as she wanted to remain aloof, or seem as though she had high standards. There's that cool person embargo and actually liking stuff, after all.

Ah, the whole can't admit to actually liking something thing. Reminds me a lot of Rd, actually.

Yeah, I'm really liking it so far.

EDIT: Okay, I really enjoyed it. It's not exactly the most deep episode the show has done, but it was a lot of fun and had some great Rarijack and Flutterdash shipping fuel character interactions.

The very ending dragged it down a little with the cheesy "yay we're friends!" lines. I think I'm actually starting to miss the friendship letters conceit; if nothing else, they provided a framework that made announcing the episode's moral more tolerable. :P

And the journal is different how? Yeah I miss the letters, but it still works.

It's just not the same with the journal, it's trying so hard to be like the letters to Celestia but failing miserably.

@Wryte: Yeah, that was really my only complaint about the episode. It's like they went out of the way to state the moral even though it was blatantly obvious. Felt like gilding the lily. Really good otherwise, though

@Seraphem: The thing with the journal is that it's a bit more needless than the letters. There was a good in-universe reason for the letters, but the journal's reason is a bit unnecessary. The whole "writing for the benefit of future generations" thing falls a bit flat because functionally it's exactly the same as the letters. The fact that they haven't really changed any makes it stick out more as a plot device.

While I don't think they're worse in and of themselves, I'll admit the fact that they're basically changing the fluff but not the mechanic, as it were, is a bit... sore-thumby.

@Kegisak: Pretty much. It's not that the journal is bad in and of itself, its that journal is a blatant excuse state the morals.

[up]This is the background I'm using now.

Yeah I miss the letters.

Granted having other members of the Six write letters and it's infrequency throughout season 3, as well as Super Cider basically saying AJ already knew her lesson sho the formula wasn't working by then, but it's still an expected device.

You could argue the letters were really only important to season 1 and the first half of two, where Twi being knew gave justification to their importance.

I never minded them being in, or the journal bits, perfectly fine with them recaping things like that.

I just miss hearing "Dear Princess Celestia."
