A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

All of the usual forum rules apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Correct- it had to do with her being a princess.

I think you need to rewatch the episode.

@Ike: I'm sort of neutral about paradoxes. Most of the time it just follows the main timeline, where the events were averted (e.g. you go back in time To stop a certain event happening, but it makes you from the timeline where it DID happen cease to exist, and thus can't have changed it in the first time). They don't make much sense scientifically, but neither does most things in SF or F(logically).

I hate paradoxes. They are why I hate time travel. Because it means that much if not all of a story that has one in it makes no sense.

No, the real problem is that fiction invaribly treats time travel as a plot device rather than actually examining the implications. But when it's handled properly, it's awesome. See Primer, Achron.

Hmm, foals freaking out over Princess Twilight.. has nothing to do with her ascension... sure.

And why does it have to? It's not 'making excuses' it's deducing facts from evidence shown.

No, its because she's a princess. When she finds out the Crusaders have been hanging out with Twilight, DT basically says that she was just a weird bookworm before, but now she's a princess and therefore interesting.

Story- I agree that not examining time travel is dumb. But a story that makes no logical sense because of paradoxes rims the story that is being told.

Proving you have no damn clue what you are talking about. Even if it WAS written before the finale aired, the script for that had been done for over a year at that point. So the writers would have know regardless.

Diamond Tiara: "I mean, we used to see her around town all the time, and I thought, "whatever," but now she's a princess, which makes her totally awesome!"

That's the line. It isn't throwaway, its explicitly the reason they want to hang out with her in the first place.

Logience- no, it's not a throwaway line. It's an explanation, a statement that the kids did not care about Twilight, the just care about the princess. If Twilight weren't a princess the rest of the episode wouldn't have occurred. "Oh, you're being tutored by that geek who lives in the library? Who cares."

Crow- thank you.

@Crow: But DT is exactly the sort of person that would only be interested in someone if they were royalty/noble class, or popular/suckup. She doesn't really reflect the views of everybody, as the only other person that seems to be like her is SS(for foals).

But a story that makes no logical sense because of paradoxes rims the story that is being told.

Paradoxes can be handled perfectly well (see the works I mentioned before). I'm not sure what your argument is unless you just have trouble understanding paradoxes.

But she hypes it up as being important, and for some.. unexplained reason the foals listen to her. Plus, they just get overcome with the whole 'cool' factor.

Kids listening to figures of authority that aren't their parents isn't really that surprising. They would have listened to her when she was only a librarian, too, except for DT, and SS.

Why would they and what does that have to do with anything? This wasn't them needing somepony to make them listen, the only WANTED to put themselves in a situation involving Twi because she was a Princess and it was new and 'cool'.

... Okay. Let me explain my problem with paradoxes in the context of Homestuck.

The Alpha kids are cloned in a lab in Sburb, and sent through a portal to Earth.

The DNA for the clones... Came from the clones that are sent to Earth.

There is no source for their DNA. It emerges from nowhere.

This is a problem. The characters' very existence is a paradox. They have no point if origin so it doesn't make sense for them to even exist. And since the Beta kids were created using DNA from the Alpha kids, it makes no sense for them to exist either. The same applies to the trolls.

Based on this information, how can the story even happen???

Homestuck

Well there's your problem. You're not supposed to take the plot seriously. Homestuck doesn't take itself seriously.
