A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

As far as shipping, I'm still of the "any pairing, excepting blatant Crack Ship pairings, could be made to work when written properly".
I second this. Then I can make some progress on my fanfic projects, which I have too many of. I'm hoping to get my latest oneshot done by the weekend so I can post it next week, but I doubt I'll make it. I just hope no one else will jack the idea and post a fic about it before I finish.

Reaction Image Repository^^^ I'm not even totally willing to write off crack ships. Not after the shipfic I read last night...

Stands out like some guy in a military parade wearing a Hawaiian shits
Gross.
@Story: Yeah. Apparently, despite the pairing being so random you'd think it was obvious how arbitrary it was and that it was picked primarily on visuals, some people are apparently offended by the notion. Go figure.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.I hope to finish my fanfic some day, but I've become increasingly pessimistic over time.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayJT- I asked that after about fifteen minutes of waiting to see if anyone said anything.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I throw these things together every week or two, mostly because I get bored. I'm hoping that one of these days I can be good enough for the Lifehacker featured desktop contest.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI think it's more interesting and productive to talk about how a story could have been done better, rather than just pointing out that something was subpar. So, in the crazy alternate universe where I was allowed to make extensive revisions to EQG...
Twilight fails utterly at her first attempt to make the humane five reconcile. She becomes convinced that Rainbow Dash is the key and seeks her out. Dash is more than happy to help Twi take Sunset down (after a soccer match that plays out the same as before) but significantly less happy to hear that Twi wants her to talk with AJ first. ("I'll do anything to give Sunset Shimmer her just desserts, but I won't do that.")
This pushes Twi right to the edge of the despair event horizon. Just how messed up is this world when there isn't even harmony between its versions of the element bearers? Unconcerned for the fate of Canterlot High, Twi decides to break into Celestia's office, steal the crown, and hightail back to Equestria that night.
Then she runs into Flash Sentry again. He asks what her plans for that night are and then invites her to come see his band play a show. She says yes, even though she's not terribly interested, because she can't come out and say "I'm busy. Committing burglary."
At the venue, as they wait for an opening act to finish, Twi asks about Flash's band, which leads to Flash talking about the music he likes... and geeking out big time about his favorite bands: The Scarlet Monarch, Affirmative, and Hurry. Twi has no idea what he's talking about, but she finds his enthusiasm interesting all the same. Then Flash asks what kind of music Twi likes. Twi answers that she really doesn't know much about music, just that she likes the jazz and classical that her parents listen to.
Then Flash's band goes up. We only see them play one song, but as the rest of the band think the song's winding down, Flash launches into a prog rock guitar solo. Twilight recognizes that he's incorporating melodies from Neightoven's symphonies into the solo and cheers loudly for him. She's the only one—the rest of the audience is visibly bored.
After the show, Twi walks up to Celly's office door, whips out her set of lock picks (and her Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Lockpicking book) then she hesitates. Spike asks what's the matter. Twi says that she's been thinking, and maybe this strange world of hairless bipeds isn't as bad as she thought. That she should try one more time to get the doubles of her friends to make up.
The next morning, Twi, Spike, and Flash work together to trick the humane five into going into the same room at once. They all start bickering again, until Twi calls for silence. She asks them to explain, once and for all, why they aren't friends any more. Their reconciliation plays out just like it originally did.
And the rest of the story would be pretty much the same as it already is. I guess during the big finale, make a point of showing that Principles Celly and Luna are also under Sunset's control, to make it more plausible that she poses a threat to Equestria.
I'm too tired to figure out how I'd overhaul the whole thing, but I can say I'd do the following:
- Introduce a subplot about Sunset Shimmer trying to undermine Twilight's confidence by reminding her that she was also Celestia's student once, and playing off of Twilight's fears of Academic failure.
- Bringing up Sunset and Flash Sentry's past to make him conflicted, and possibly have doubts about Twilight due to how Sunset Shimmer turned out.
There's really two ways to go about revising the plot. One is to cut Flash's role entirely, which theoretically leaves more room to develop the remaining characters, particularly Sunset who needs the characterization badly. The other way is to use Flash's character, making him more involved with the plot, and developing his character alongside Sunset Shimmer (like hitting two birds in one scene).
I understand most people would prefer the first one.
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

What's that from, My Time Among The Clothes Hangers?
