A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

@Sereg: Yes, but while you might be like her, you aren't, and it's totally possible that RD can undergo Character Development.
Honestly, I think it would be interesting to try to write a Sweetie/Spike fic with that as the main conflict; Spike's grown out of his crush on Rarity, which he realizes was just infatuation, and he realizes that he has much deeper and more meaningful feelings for Sweetie. Problem is, he doesn't know how to go about pursuing that relationship in a way that doesn't come across as settling.

Reaction Image RepositoryMe neither.
Scrathtavia is best ship.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Crowfall: Twilight gets up early and goes to bed late. Rainbow naps throughout the day. Twilight enjoys reading and talking about books. Rainbow likes one series. Rainbow is active. Twilight is sedate. Rainbow rushes into things. Twilight organises all the time and thinks things through. Ranbow is outdorsey. Twilight spends her time in the library. Twilight's an intellectual. Rainbow doesn't like being an egghead. Rainbow is loud and brash. Twilight isn't. They would always want different things. Their egos would clash (though Rainbow's would usually win). Rainbow drags ponies to things she wants and gets completely bored and restless when something doesn't interest her. Rainbow is aggressive, competitive and daring. Twilight is humble and doesn't like showing others up. Everything about them is seeped in conflict. I'd rather die alone and unloved. It'd be more pleasant.
Because clearly being in a relationship would result in neither of them changing any of those things. I don't deny that it would hard and they'd probably have their share of fights, but Opposites Attract is a common thing for a reason. I think part of the popularity of the ship is seeing how they might go about rubbing off on each other. Like Rainbow Dash might want to share her enjoyment of the outdoors with Twilight and give her a greater appreciation for something that she previously didn't care for. Or Twilight might broaden RD's horizons by introducing her to more books that they can both enjoy and discuss. Rainbow Dash's confidence might rub off on Twilight and help her stop worrying over everything, and Twilight's humility might help mitigate RD's tendency to brag.
The point is that it depends on how one interprets those differences. They could lead to fights, but they also might lead to a better understanding between them and broadened horizons for both characters. I can never bring myself to say that Twi Dash could never work because there are dozens of ways for the pairing to play out, some of which would be perfectly happy. Just because their interests and personalities don't match perfectly doesn't mean that they couldn't get along romantically, just that they'd have to work at it harder.
And this is coming from a guy who isn't even a huge fan of the pairing.

Reaction Image Repository@Sereg: All I'll say to that is this,
because I have no interest or time to get involved in a shipping argument right now, but I think you're focusing way too much on superficial character aspects.
Probably doesn't help that so many fics love to trivialize just how hard it is to build up a relationship like that.
FE: New Mystery Only Feet 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Umamusume Haru Arima 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshi
Which is why I wrote my fic specifically to show that buildup. I deliberately picked the ponies I did because they were so different.
Okay, so now we're talking about shipping in general? In that case I'll say "Twiluna OTP" and leave it at that.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Every relationship has fights. Looking for more is an exercise in unnecessary unpleasantness.
This has been studied. It's not how Opposites Attract works in real life. IRL, people like opposites where the similarities would overwhelm each other. eg. Peopl who talk a lot don't date other people who talk a lot.
They can do these things as friends. Being romantically involved forces it which is just unpleasant.
I've seen Twilight/Dashish relationships between myself and my step-family (and also my Dad and my step-mom). It resulted in me having three mental breakdowns, being kicked out the house twice. Being hit in the face with an iron. A physical brawl where I was hit on the head by a pepper grinder and needed stitches. Total destruction of my self-esteem and self-worth. Me deciding to commit suicide to purge the world of so awful a person as myself ... etc. Oh, and my Dad becoming a completely broken man. Let's not get into what happened to my sister.
I've read that strip. And trust me. This stuff is not superficial. Take it from someone who has experienced it.
EDIT: Twinkie is also one of my anti-ships.

Edited in a bit extra.
Apparently.
Yeah, but it really hurts my Willing Suspension of Disbelief. Part of the issue, I guess, is that I'm a lot like Twilight and I suspect that if I was dating Rainbow, I'd cry myself to sleep every night (this is also why I anti-ship Flutter Dash)
This is my problem with it as well. It seems insulting.
