A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

All of the usual forum rules apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

I don't know WHAT the Hell happened (I blame shenanigans) but we're going to start from scratch. Post your feels for this awesome show again! Naow!

So 8 bits is 100 cents?

Sounds like a pretty impractical currency.

Seems practical to me. After all, a penny makes less sense than a bit.

But it doesn't make sense to use both pieces of 8 and cents.

And then we get into how... like, roughly 12 yen = 1 cent.

Yes but that's just the exchange rate. In Japan, I presume they mostly quote prices in units of 100 or 1000 Yen.

To quote Good Omens:

Note for young people and Americans: One shilling = Five Pee. ...

Two farthings = One Ha'penny. Two ha'pennies = One Penny. Three pennies = A Thrupenny Bit. Two Thrupences = A Sixpence. Two Sixpences = One Shilling, or Bob. Two Bob = A Florin. One Florin and One Sixpence = Half a Crown. Four Half Crowns = Ten Bob Note. Two Ten Bob Notes = One Pound (or 240 pennies). One Pound and One Shilling = One Guinea.

The British resisted decimalized currency for a long time because they thought it was too complicated.

Good thing they eventually saw the light. I was interested to learn that it was actually a plot point in the first Doctor Who episode.

Pretty sure the odd value of the bit is because back when it was in use they didn't divide dollars into cents. A bit wasn't defined as 12.5 cents, it was 1/8 of a dollar. Incidentally, before this conversation, I'd never made the connection between that and pieces of eight.

Seeing as though we've been asked to drop this, I'm willing to switch to P Ms. However, I am a trained scientist with an Msc who got a distinction in Philosophy of Science. So, I can tell you how incorrect that is.

I respectfully decline that offer. While this hasn't gone out of hand yet, it undoubtely will.

Post of the Day #696

That seems to be more true of this season then last, where, if I remember correctly Ms. Faust actually had reservations about having an actual train engine in the series. She seemed to have wanted more of a fantasy setting and where electricity was need she assumed it was magic.

To be fair, this seems to be a steam powered train, rather than an electric one.

Yup. There's a tiny unicorn inside powering it, he gets to keep half the bits.

Still firmly fantasy, not really that many higher tec things out sdie of one off jokes. And most of those are easily explained as Magi-tec

The tiny unicorn will occasionally rock the machine to make the kids lose and spend more money. Because he's a dick like that.

Fantasy doesn't imply medieval fantasy or even steampunk fantasy.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

It pisses me off how restricted and dogmatic the supposed "fantasy" genre has become.

My personal fanon is that Earth Ponies dominate the mundane technology tree of Equestria, and most of the Pegasi and Unicorn stuff only really took off because they plundered EP tech pre-Unification and/or via collaborative R&D.

Also technological development is somewhat lopsided because the ponies don't use mass-production on the same scale as humans, and because they have natural 'magic' and strengths that let them skip a lot of human discoveries.
