A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

Assuming Luna focuses on kids, she could have gotten it from one of the party goers too.

What? They don't even have NA Ds?

None. It's really quite terrible.

Also, Apple Bloom and Scootaloo being Sapphire Shores fans was strange. Shores doesn't seem like someone either of them would look up to or idolise.

Still, Sweetie Belle being into show tunes was cute.

Maybe she takes after Rarity in that regard.

Luna implied that she can see the dreams of everyone in Equestruia every night. That it is in fact, her duty to do so. Celestia has been implied to be capable of reading minds from a different city. Nightmare Moon and Discord were both also hinted to have mind reading abilities.

@Storyyeller: Unless the ball is made of rock, it's not registering as much. Then again, the two of us have very different views on the show about this kind of stuff, as I see everything as counting, and you don't.

EDIT: Season 1-3 Twilight has a strength of 1. She can lift three tons.

By the way, do you think characters confusing a song title for dialgoue when discussing musicians is tropeable? I've seen it at least 3 times.

I wonder if it's a hint we'll get more musical inspired stuff soon? It'd be nice, the music has been pretty poppy lately.

Well, we've got Flim and Flam again next week, so some more Music Man references might be due.

I edited it in, but I may as well say it again. Storyyeller, a strength of 1 allows you to lift up to three tons. No Earth human is reaching a strength of 2.

I doubt it's supposed to have any significance re the soundtrack.

Unless you're doing Rifts or Exalted or something, you'll probably want a bit more granularity than that.

@Storyyeller: Well, it is based on the Exalted system, but that's more based on my estimations of Twilight's strength and the fact that she seems to be at around the minimum strength for a healthy pony. Every additional point adds another one and a half tons.

I like Ponyfinder more than whatever you guys are talking about. It's more putting ponies into an established Pathfinder world than putting the show into tabletop format but it does think through how things work. A real disappointment though is how they handle the "destiny brand". I honestly think having one should confer a +5 skill point bonus in exchange for the whole handless issue. Like Rarity would say get a +5 on Craft. Fluttershy on Handle Animal. Twilight on Spellcraft etc... This might make unicorns broken except the fact that their telekinesis is portrayed as a spell like ability that only works a limited number of times per day or at least without added feats. But not having hands is a major disadvantage simply because so many classes rely upon using weapons or humanoid gestures.

The bigger issue is that unlike D&D, MLP is not combat focused.

@Story: That might fit as a subtrope of Waxing Lyrical.

@Sereg: I vaguely remember discussing the mechanics of your system. Would've loved to playtest it, but trying to do it online would be really impractical. I don't have a whole lot of room in my schedule.

[up][up]Yeah, an MLP RPG should be all about skills and roleplaying, not slaying orcs.

You'd have quests like, I don't know, save a kid's lemonade stand or something by advertising it in town or something.

Not right now, but I really enjoyed the last game I was talked into running even though we unfortunately never finished it. I'd be happy to try again.

I hear good things about Ponyfinder. It's something I'd be interested in trying out. But yeah, it's trying to do something very different from what I was attempting.

I'm in the same boat, but it ended up as a lot less of a problem than I feared. It made the pace a bit slow, but t worked well enough, I think. I won't deny that I prefer doing it around a table, but I never get the chance to do that anymore anyway.

Agreed. I tried to bare that in mind. You can go on epic quests but smaller stuff is also important. Just like in the show.

[up][up]When you did it was it like a play-by-post type of thing, or was it like on skype?

As far as an MLP RPG would go, I do think it needs to have some emphasis on the social side of things, but the problem with that is that when it comes to character roleplaying, I tend to find it more enjoyable to not bother about having a "system" at all and just develop the characters through the roleplaying itself rather than by rolling dice or whatever. I'd probably enjoy an MLP game more if it did have some action elements. Not necessarily combat, I'd want there to be some epicness in the setting beyond roleplaying everyday life. There's way too much cool fantasy stuff in the setting (hydra, manticore, ursa major, chimera, tatzlwurms, parasprites, cragadiles, dragons, anything Daring Do related) to not use it somehow.

I think it would be best to have a balance of social and action roleplaying. To use an episode of the show as an example, you could have "Dragonshy" as a quest, where your goal is to get a dragon to stop blowing smoke everywhere. You'd have to make your way to the lair, and then you'd have the options of either physically fighting the dragon, or trying to convince it to leave. The players could decide whether or not they wanted to fight or not.

Did some editing.

@CDRW: And it is glorious as always.

I used play-by-post, but now I have Skype, so that venue is now available.

Also good points that I tried to bare in mind. I considered social stuff too important to not have a system for it, but I agree that the roleplaying is more important than what the dice say. The dice just measure success. The roleplaying gives context.

You could always have some of the errands lead to the everfree forest. Besides, combat is the part where the most dice are being rolled. And if there is one fact of life, it's that gamers love the feeling of rolling dice.

That's really the big problem with online gaming for me. Not getting to roll dice is always a downer.
