A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!@ Stardust: "Love is in the air..."
I put my friend in a coconut! He lives in my hat! Hey, come hang out! That was a great Sweetie Belle episode! She's my favorite of the CMC and one of my top favorite characters from the show in general, so I was excited about this one. This was a very good way to use Luna's character, since she would have been in a very similar situation with Celestia. Plus I realized that it's not even that out of place for her to show up in person (pony?) at the end, since she does live in Canterlot and would have been watching over Sweetie Belle anyway. She may have even been wanting to watch Sapphire Shores's show herself, too.
\\storyyeller, Thu, 20th Mar '14 1:26:40 PM AJ and Maud are n't even remotely similar.
\\darkabomination, Thu, 20th Mar '14 1:40:34 PM Yeah they're pretty superficial similarities, their personalities are very different.
I never brought up personality only similarity in traits. Obviously both characters stand on their own.
Though someone on the wiki pointed out that they are both honest. I just find more comparisons between Maud and Applejack than I do with Rarity who also has a sister.
On a different note, Princess Luna is now the three Spirits of Christmas all in one.
So. This episode.
It took me until the middle to get that it's supposed to be a "Christmas Carol"/"It's a Wonderful Life" story, but it was refreshing to see this kind of story applied to a non-holiday-themed episode. And it was great seeing Sapphire again!
But.... I had a problem with Sweetie Belle's behavior. Yeah I KNOW that was the point, but why would be as the audience see her side of the conflict?? Did we SEE her write the script or produce any other part of the play?? NO. We start the episode with Sweetie Belle pestering Rarity to finish up the costumes when the play is the day after. How can we get invested in the plot if we only see what Sweetie Belle did when it was finished?? She clearly thought her OWN work and effort into putting the play on was more important that Rarity's generous contributions, but even if Rarity did a horrible job, wouldn't Sweetie immediately realize that cherishing and congratulating Rarity would be more important than her own selfish gains, once she saw that the costumes were the one thing the audience even remembered about it?
I'm not sure why it's important to see her doing all that work if it's clearly established that she did everything else herself. Not to mention that even with the costumes, her intent was to do those herself and have her sister just tweak them a bit. It was clear that she had invested a lot in the play beforehand.
Reaction Image RepositoryAaaah okay.
.... I have a theory that Luna can duplicate herself. She goes into pony's dreams and sometimes even visits them in private in the real world routinely?? There's no way she'd be able to do all that and carry out her princess duties unless there were more than one of her.
Also...

Maybe she's keeping an eye on Ponyville specifically.
Also, Sweetie Belle is turning into a changeling.

Missed the very end of the episode (had to rush out of the house to get something) so I didn't see the ending until now. In general, it was definitely a great Sweetie Belle episode, but I think I have to somewhat agree with Mio. For some reason, despite having a lot of great things in place, it felt like it moved a little too fast. Like something was missing or some part needed more time to really make it work.
Or maybe it was because I didn't watch at my own pace because I was always checking the time. Maybe I'll have to watch it again.
At the same time, I'm glad it didn't demonize either side too much. At the end of the day, it did feel like Sweetie Belle's actions were Disproportionate Retribution, especially since Rarity took time out of her busy schedule to make them really good for their play, but at the same time, it's definitely understandable why Sweetie was so upset.
