A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Fairly different, at least. It might have to do with the size of the avvie. And the bracelet.
It just feels... different, I guess.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Incidentally, I wonder how hard it would be to beat the game without catching any pokemon at all. (Bulbasaur can learn Cut, Gyrados and Lapras can learn Surf and Strength, and Fly and Flash are not actually necessary. It's probably possible, but relying on a Venasaur as your main would probably take a lot of grinding.")
You also get Eevee and Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan as gift pokemon in FRLG. And what's wrong with Venusaur?
I think I read somewhere that while Bulbasaur is weak off the start, statistically he comes out as the best of the starters. Second, at least.
But really, relying on any one pokemon to be able to take out entire gyms would require a lot of grinding. Very careful grinding so they don't go over the level limit.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.@Kegisak: The main issue is that Bulbasaur's typing kinda sucks. Grass and poison have quite a few weaknesses, and it doesn't really have a great movepool either, at least not in Gen 1.
Reaction Image RepositoryI forgot about Hitmonfoo. Together with the fossils, that makes a total of 5 gift pokemon, enough to give you a full party by the end! Anyway, the problem with Venusaur is that it's not Blastoise. Squirtle is simply the best starter there is.
Squirtle can beat Brock at level 8 without even trying. Bulbasaur doesn't get any decent grass moves until level 13. Furthermore, Squirtle has better typing and with the T Ms Dig and Icebeam, has an advantage against nearly everyone.
The level limit only applies to traded pokemon.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayBulbasaur's stats may be weak early on, but he's still the strongest starter because he has type advantages against the first two gyms and resistances against the third and fourth (he also hits his final evolution four levels earlier). Squirtle, on the other hand, is only strong against the first, resistant to the second, and weak against both the third and fourth, while Charmander is weak against both the first two, neutral to the second, and not strong until the fourth.
Venusaur is limited in his offensive move pool, but he is a powerhouse against what he does have advantages against, and has some great support abilities. I took out Lance's Dragonite back in Gen I more than a few times just by Leech Seed/Sleep Powdering it to death. Plus, he was the fastest of all grass types in Gen I (which was still only about average compared to most other types; Gen I grass types were universally slowpokes with the exception of the saurs and Eggsecutor).
Wow, I just looked up Venusaurs movepool, and I never realized just how much it sucked. Venusaur does not learn a single damaging non Grass or Normal move, even including T Ms.
Meanwhile Blastoise learns powerful Ice, Fighting, and Ground type attacks, which nicely cover its weaknesses (Lt Surge and Erika are trivial with Dig and Icebeam respectively).
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayLt Surge and Erika's theoretical advantage is irrelevant when you sweep them with super effective moves.
Meanwhile, Venusaur does not learn a single offensive move outside the grass and normal types. The only thing it has going for it is the silly Leech Seed + Toxic combo, but it doesn't have anything that lets it OHKO (heck, even it's powerful Solarbeam wastes a turn).
Also, the moves that Venusaur does get are far less powerful. The best non recoil, non recharge move it gets is freaking Body Slam with 85 power. Meanwhile Blastiose is surfing away with 95 power and STAB. Even it's normal moves are better thanks to Skull Bash.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayDammit why is it so hard to find a good custom notepad/word processor icon.
I got custom icons for all the other programs on my dock, but I can't find a good one for Libre Office. Sigh.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Sometimes type-advantage OHKO's get boring after a while. That's why I did a run in Silver where one of my party members was a Ditto (feeding Gengars their own Shadow Ball FTW) and another was a Togetic that was only allowed Metronome as a direct-damage move (I taught it Fly, but only for the fast travel).
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...I'm actually thinking of building a team based solely on attrition, myself. Trying to get a Nidoqueen(Pretty decent max. Defense Stat, and the poison/ground type combo has fairly few weaknesses) to tank and chip with poison damage, and a Treevenant that just regens so much health actually trying to beat it becomes a bitch. the one I caught has Lay Roots(Heal at the end of every turn) and Leech Seed already. I figure combine that with leftovers, teach it curse, and I can just wait something to death.
Aside from those two though I don't really know of any other pokemon that are well built for attrition battles.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. The third and fourth gyms are more negligible since you have access to a wider array of pokemon by then, I just felt like including them for completion's sake. Bulbasaur is still the best choice to be made as far as the first two gyms, where your selection is much more limited, which is especially important for Nuzlocke, since Misty's Starmie is such a monster.
Try a shuckle. Toxic + Protect + Dig is a good combination, just pick a fourth move to deal with steel types.
Speaking of Nuzlockes, I just beat Surge. I was able to one-shot all of his Pokemon with Diglet.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/But it's the most effective way to win, and with the self imposed challenges and aversion to grinding, that's actually difficult sometimes.
I'd say it's best for Misty only. Squirtle can easily beat Brock at level 8 while Bulbasaur can't do the same until level 13.
