A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

It probably wasn't intentional. The idea was clearly supposed to be that both the Mane 6 and Maud cared for Pinkie Pie even though they weren't friendly with each other, but from what was actually shown, it seemed like only Maud cared about Pinkie Pie, while the Mane 6 either didn't understand her or were helpless when she needed them.

I think you're reading things into the episode that weren't there. Especially seeing as you seem to be alone in your interpertation.

I have an idea of what they were trying to do, but I think the execution needed work. I didn't get the impression from this episode that the Mane 6 cared about Pinkie Pie as much as Maud did, even though that was the intent, and given how hard they tried to make her feel welcome in Ponyville, it felt kind of lopsided that Maud didn't make much noticeable effort to meet them halfway.

Just to change topic before this turns into the "everybody jump on Robotnik" thread, my Nuzlocke is going quite well. Just swept Surge's gym with my Nidoqueen, Elsa, though Surge's Raichu gave me some frustration. He had the brains to stack Double Team off the bat, and KO'ing his Pikachu has paralyzed Elsa, so it took a while to land the hits necessary to take him out. Still, it was basically inevitable, since he couldn't do anything to me but Quick Attacks, which soon enough led to him poisoning himself. Next up is Diglett's Cave to get back to Pewter City, then off to the Rock Tunnel and Lavender Town.
Current team is 27 Nidoqueennote , 25 Ivysaurnote , 25 Fearownote , and 25 Alakazamnote , and the level 3 Rattata that got KO'd right after I caught him (by the Spearow that's now my Fearow, no less) remains my only death.
One of these days I'm actually going to remember the proper formatting for notes.

Sometimes the people making the knockoffs don't even try.
My favorite comment is that AJ looks like Shrek.

Maud wasn't supposed to be expressive, I got that, but if she was trying to be sociable, I feel like they should have had her do something other than say, "Actually, I don't really care about this" during most of the suggested activities. The Mane 6, for example, clearly got tired of playing the "Find Boulder" game but went along with it anyway. Maud was never really shown to do anything comparable for them.

I also think it's unfair to say someone isn't trying to be sociable when it's obvious that you are working with different concepts of what "sociable" actually means. I've been on the bad end of that particular problem too many times to count, and it's a nasty one that makes it nearly impossible to make friends.

Except that Maud did go along with all their activities. I'd argue that she probably even enjoyed some of them, its just hard to tell. The thing is, if she was having fun, it was in a slightly different way than the cast intended.
With Rarity, Maud genuinely seemed to like that cloth as a scarf, but that went against Rarity's fashion sensibilities.
With Fluttershy, she was more interested in the local geology than the wildlife, but that doesn't mean she didn't like going on a walk with her, she was just getting something different out of it.
With Twilight, she shared her poetry, that's actually a rather personal thing to share with someone you just met.
She was helping Applejack with the cider. Granted she was terrible at it, but points for effort I guess. Her "it tastes like apples" could be a pretty big compliment given her stoic nature.
I've no idea if she had fun with Rainbow or not. Maybe she enjoys throwing rocks for it's own sake, so winning didn't matter?
What Crowfall said.
From what Pinkie says and some of Maud's other actions, I suspect that Maud likes games, but doesn't care where she places. She should try some non-competitive games like Obiellettes and Ogres.
Maud: The dungeon is made of dolomite with traces of other minerals. There is a figure in the center of the room.
Rainbow: It's another golem, isn't it?
could be worse. could be cockroaches. -shivers-

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

I wasn't really a huge fan of this episode. The writing seemed to take the position that the Mane 6 were at fault for not bonding with Maud and finding it difficult to put aside their differences, when they tried to make her feel comfortable and she barely seemed to attempt to be sociable or try to appreciate their interests.
And then there was the playground accident and the Mane 6's contrived response of just standing there before Maud did everything. Between that and the talk about how good a sister she was, the implication seemed to be that this new, not-particularly-likeable character was a better friend to Pinkie than her actual friends.
