A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

It's a kids show that can appeal to teens and adults because it's capable of having depth, but it's all fictional in the end and people should really get the stick out of their ass once in a while and not take it so seriously.

I'm talking to you, 4chan.

I thought it was a little weird how the chair legs unfolded. Wouldn't that make it weaker against Tigers?

After seeing that taxi, I'm once again struck by the thought that Equestria really could do with founding their own version of OSHA. Also, jeeze, AJ. How's Applebloom going to grow up to be a confident, self-sufficient mare if you refuse to trust her with even a little bit of responsibility? Also again, way to undercut the family decision that she was ready.

@Princess Gwenevere: Well there is always going to be those who try to label things they don't like with terms to give them some kind of objective significance. It's the biggest reason why Mary Sue no longer means anything.

@Luminiosity: To be fair, it's not necessarily the same fans who are promoting both things.

@Sereg: People don't necessarily set the same standards for fictional characters as they do for fictional.

Frankly I don't think people would find extremely "realistic" characters to be annoying/tedious/unendearing after a certain point.

[up][up][up]Telling people to care less about things they care about deeply is usually an exercise in futility.

It also doesn't help that people getting invested in your piece of fiction is usually a sign that your doing something right.

I wonder if the writers know what Applejack values more: family, or work? She seems to zigzag between the two.

[up][up] So I've noticed. I don't find it any less mind-boggling, however. I just don't get wrapped up in fiction the way some do, I guess. I can get invested, but I still walk away from something that I once loved without being a drama queen about it. / shrug

[up] I would say family; she takes her work seriously because it's a means of supporting said family. And such a work ethic came from her family.

Then how come Stalkerjack completely throws her pie-delivering duties out the window because "family is more important"? .... you know that's WORK, right??

I find it easier to assume that AJ just caught some form of temporary insanity.

[up][up]Which means means she probably values family more, right? If AJ had to choose between delivering pies and saving Apple Bloom from danger, then she'd choose Apple Bloom; even if the danger is in her head.

There will always be pies, you can bake more pies. You can't raise a pony from the dead.

or can you??

@Lum: The problem is that "bronies" aren't a unified group of fans. The groups that are saying "it's just a kids show; simmer down" and "It's more than just a kids show!" aren't always the same people, even though they're part of the same fanbase. What the show actually is is a kids show that's purposely designed to be able to appeal to adults as a secondary demographic. When it comes to characterization yes, they're going to take a rather broad strokes approach and not really bother much to make sure everything is perfectly consistent. But they've put enough effort into making it consistent that you can't handwave blatant OOC moments.

I don't think this episode is OOC, though. It's just that character exaggeration has a spectrum from "mildly exaggerated" to "extreme overexaggeration", and for some people the episode leaned a bit too far towards the latter. Yes, you can exaggerate and focus on certain traits to make the plot work, but you can only go so far before it steps over the line and comes across as overkill. And AJ's behavior in this episode is right on the line.

@Gwen:

I think pony works its best when characters are bouncing off each other. There's still a lot of dynamic between main and/ or supporting characters that could stand be elaborated on.

I completely agree with this. I know that lots of people like the adventure elements of the show, but I think the strongest episodes are the ones that focus more on the character interactions. I'd love to see the show have more bottle episode type things along the lines of Look Before You Sleep that just show the cast going about their business.

Also, yeah, AJ prioritizes family over work. She cares a lot about the farm, but that's because she views it as a family endeavor and part of her duty to them is to keep the farm working so it can provide for them.

I have a slight feeling that the only reason she was overprotective of Applebloom was because she probably couldn't handle that hellfire swamp, and seeing her little sister being able to do so helped strengthen her in the same way AB was strengthening herself. AJ may be tough, but she isn't the superman others think she is.

Me: That scene of AB climbing out the window was some subtle foreshadowing, come to think of it.

Storyyeller: How so?

Up until that point, Applejack's fears for Applebloom's safety were completely unfounded. We saw that AB was being responsible and got all her chores done without incident. The only accidents happened because AJ startled her.

Then AB climbs out the window, falls, and is only okay because AJ piled bays of hay outside the window beforehand. For the first time that episode, AJ's precaution turned out to be reasonable. (Granted, it only became an issue because AJ was smothering AB up to then.) AB's subsequent trip to the Fire Swamp teaches her that sometimes she really does need her big sis's help—which that tumble out the window had already demonstrated, if AB had been paying attention.

I'm one of those weird people who really wasn't that keen on Look Before You Sleep. It's one of my least favourite episodes.

Still, taste and all that.

I admit that I do take the show very seriously and have strong feelings about it, but that's partially due to the fact that ... well, nothing else makes me feel this way. It gave me a new emotion that I had never suspected existed. One that only ponies invokes. And it feels wonderful. I usually refer to the emotion as "joy" because I don't know what else to call it. I watch the show because it's a source of beauty in my life when most of my life isn't really that pretty. I watch the show when I cry or feel depressed because it's pretty much the only thing that reliably cheers me up.

So, I think that it makes sense that I'm passionate about it.

If Rainbow Powers were like any of Goku's transformations, which would it be?

Kaio-Ken, Oozaru, Super Saiyan, Ascended Saiyan, Ultra Saiyan, SSJ-2, SSJ-3, Golden Oozaru, SSJ-4 or SSJ-God?

I'm not too sure what I think of this one. Mainly because as some people have mentioned, Applejack's overprotectiveness was exaggerated to a degree that was kind of annoying to me, especially since she hasn't acted that way since Bridle Gossip. On the other hand, it makes sense that she would be worried if this is the first time Apple Bloom has been left alone by herself at the farm. Even when she was off on adventures with the other CMC, she was at least with two other ponies who could have helped her if she got hurt. An idea I thought of is that if Applejack's parents are dead, maybe they died having a common household accident, and Applejack doesn't want that to happen to her sister as well. Also, if this episode was written by someone who is brand new to the series, we don't know if he watched all the episodes to prepare or if he was given just some character descriptions and may have watched some of the episodes but not all of them. Plus, he may have been going for Rule of Funny through Character Exaggeration and I'd admit it was kind of funny as well as annoying, although for personal reasons because I once made up a character who was exaggeratedly overprotective of her teenage daughter in the same exact way. It also had a good moral about there being a balance between letting children learn to fend for themselves and making sure that they do get help when there is a real danger.

On a different note, the whole fire swamp reminded me of a part of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon in the Explorers of Sky game, in the side story where you play as Sunflora. (note that I've never seen the Princess Bride so I wouldn't have made that connection) There's a part where when she's chasing after the criminal Haunter and she gets lured into a place filled with lava that shoots out and sets her on fire, and the fire swamp made me think of that part of the game.

And then most of the original cast gets Demoted to Extra and everyone except Twilight is useless in the last season.tongue

As for the new episode, I thought it was meh. I got annoyed with AJ quickly, but I liked the climax and I thought the interrupted song bit was funny. Still, didn't really expect much from the episode, and that's what I got. Hopefully next week's episode will be better.
